OUR LIBRARIES HAVE AN OPEN DOOR POLICY
Without our library assistants, we would be forced to close our libraries whenever we are not there.
We would also have to close the door when we have
classes, as there would not be anyone to assist students or teachers while we are with a class.
Small groups could not come in to use the resources
of the library as there would not be anyone to oversee them.
SNAPSHOT OF BOOKS CHECKED IN AND OUT FOR A 5-DAY PERIOD
Without our Library Assistants, we would not be able to answer the following questions~
Where do I find? Could you recommend? How do I access? Could you find a book on my
level? Can you show me a good website for?
WE WOULD BE TOO BUSY CHECKING IN AND CHECKING OUT BOOKS.
Without our Library Assistants, our emphasis cannot be on providing
21st Century learning experiences.
Our time would be devoted to the myriad of clerical duties necessary to manage the day-to-day running of a library media center, instead of
on empowering our learners
with the dispositions, responsibilities, and information and digital skills they need to
succeed.
• Check in and out hundreds of books per week.• Shelve books and keep the shelves in good order.• Process new book orders, making sure they are properly labeled and
entered into the library catalog.• Catalog new books which are donated to the library from parents or from
the librarian’s own purchases and donations, create labels and see to the many little details which all add up to getting a book ready for the students to check out.
• Register new patrons, answer questions • Type purchase orders.• Gather books for teachers for teaching units.• Assist with book inventory.• Repair damaged books.• Assist students in locating books.• LAMINATE FOR THE ENTIRE FACULTY.• Create and distribute overdue notices.• Assist with book displays.• Allow the library to be open to all throughout the day, including
recess and lunch breaks so that students are free to visit the library to borrow books, do some writing, work on group projects, search for information on the Internet, or enjoy a favorite book or magazine.
THE LIBRARY ASSISTANTS...
Cutting staff devalues the benefits of our school library program.
Our instructional time would be greatly reduced. This is a disservice to our students. The overall
educational benefits of our school libraries will be devalued and may be a factor that results in lower
academic achievement.
"You can't have good education without good libraries, and you can't have good libraries
without good staff." ~ALA
