earth’s final days
An in-depth study of Mark 13

The Jerusalem Temple
A stunning prediction by Jesus Mark 13:2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
Recap of Mark 13:1-23
A compelling question by the disciples Mark 13:4 Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?
Recap of Mark 13:1-23
A compelling question by the disciples Matthew 24:3 Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
Recap of Mark 13:1-23
Two indicators that will tell us that “the end” (and therefore Christ’s return) is drawing near Mark 13:8 These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
Recap of Mark 13:1-23
Birth pains (labor pains)
often begin with
contractions that are
somewhat “mild” and
infrequent. As the labor
continues, these pains
become more intense,
more painful, and more
frequent until they result
in a baby’s birth.
Birth pains of Mk. 13 Seals of Rev. 6
False messiahs
Wars, rumors of war
Earthquakes and famine
Persecution of God’s people
The Antichrist: the ultimate false messiah

Recap of Mark 13:1-23
Two indicators that will tell us that “the end” (and therefore Christ’s return) is drawing near Mark 13:14 But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand) . . .
Recap of Mark 13:1-23
Mark 13:14-23
The abomination of desolation
abomination refers to something that is
disgusting or revolting to God – usually in the form of idolatry or spiritual
uncleanness
desolation refers to something that is laid waste or is totally barren and useless
Two indicators that will tell us that “the end” (and therefore Christ’s return) is drawing near Matthew 24:15 So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand).
Recap of Mark 13:1-23
The Antichrist
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
Two indicators that will tell us that “the end” (and therefore Christ’s return) is drawing near Mark 13:19 For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be.

Isaiah 34:2, 4 For the Lord is enraged against all the nations, and furious against all their host; he has devoted them to destruction, has given them over for slaughter . . . A description of his return (vv. 24-27)
Mark 13:28-30 From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.

(vv. 32-37)
Mark 13:34-35 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 1 John 5:19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
Today’s Takeaway
The Drugs of this world . . .
Consuming the stuff of the world ruins our appetite for God!
Romans 13:11-14 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then …
Today’s Takeaway
Romans 13:11-14 …let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Today’s Takeaway
1 Thessalonians 5:5-7 For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night.
Today’s Takeaway
Knowing all the answers about the return of Christ is not what is important (even
the Son did not know the specific time of his return)…what IS important is this:
Today’s Takeaway
Jesus IS coming back! And when he does will he find YOU faithful? Far too many “Christians” have allowed the
drugs of this world to lull them to sleep. Are YOU one of them?
“Knowing when the master might return is not the concern of the servants. Only faithful
service is. Knowing is not what matters. Obedience
is everything.”
