STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION: “If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide
today whom you will serve…As for me and my
household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be
willing to become a disciple in the work of the Lord.
A disciple is a person who spends time in prayer
every day, joyfully participates in charitable works,
and generously supports their local parish and
Church mission. If we say we serve God, we must
actually do something, and not merely talk about it!
Most of us could use a little more joy, hope, and
peace in our lives. When is the last time you asked
for these spiritual gifts? – Dynamic Catholic

ASK FATHER! Have a question for Father? Liturgical, Theological,
Spiritual, Philosophical, Scriptural, or Canonical…all
are on the table. Just send him an email. Once a week,
he will pick a question to answer here in the bulletin.
This Week’s Question: I noticed you used incense at
Mass this week. Is this going to be a normal thing?
Father Says: Absolutely. Incense at Mass is quite
normal – it is abnormal to never use it. The use of
incense as part of the Church’s sacred liturgy goes back
to the very beginning. Our Jewish cousins used it
extensively in their religious rituals as well,
commanded to do so by God. See Exodus 30 and
Leviticus 16 and 1 Kings 6-7, for example.
In The Catholic Bible Dictionary, Dr. Scott
Hahn writes “Symbolically, incense represents the zeal
with which the faithful should be consumed, just as the
incense is consumed by the embers. Equally, it is a
physical symbol of the so-called good odor of Christian
virtue (hence it is said in the accounts of saints that they
died in the odor of sanctity). Finally, the burning of
incense represents the ascent of our prayers to God.
The smoke rises to the heavens just as our praises and
supplications fly upward to God.” See Psalm 141 and
Revelation 8.
Humans are created by God with senses. When
we worship the Lord our God, we should do so with
our entire being. Incense acts upon the sense of smell,
and so helps to bring the entirety of the person into the
divine worship of our Lord. Incense is especially suited
to the Masses of higher solemnity – Sundays, Holy
Days of Obligation, and Solemnities.
There are 3 things that usually cause sensitivity to
incense at Mass:
• Using cheap incense that is more wood shavings
than resins. We will not use cheap incense.
• Lighting the charcoals just before Mass begins,
causing the fumes from the igniting agent to be
present. We will light the charcoals at least 15
minutes before Mass so the igniting agent has time
to fully burn off.
• The mind - there are some folks who will start
coughing just from seeing the thurible, even when
I have no charcoal or incense in it! I cannot do
anything about that.
That said, I recognize a few people have genuine
respiratory issues and choose to avoid the incense. At
St. Paul and Christ the King, we have plenty of room
to spread out. If you are sensitive to the incense, you
might choose to sit near the back. At St. Jude
Thaddeus, we will not use incense at the Saturday
Vigil Mass to allow a choice for those sensitive to
incense.
