HOW DO YOU ENGAGE MANUFACTURING EMPLOYEES IN CORPORATE WELLNESS WHEN THEY HAVE:> Limited time away from the manufacturing
line;> Limited access to computers; and
> A range of education and literacy levels
Here are a few creative approaches we use at client sites to engage manufacturing employees in health behaviors.
Pocket-size tips1To give manufacturing employees quick information in a format that workers can easily take with them, the HealthFitness staff at a household appliance manufacturing site hands out small, pocket-sized “flyers” to promote the corporate fitness center and upcoming programs and challenges.
2 Gate crashing
At a large chemical manufacturing company, HealthFitness staff meets manufacturing workers where they’re at—via “gate crashing.” Our staff greets employees at the plant’s gate during shift changes. During this face-to-face time, staff hands out program information, fruit snacks and other incentives to promote current and upcoming wellness programs.
3 Candid camera
To launch a nutritional program, manufacturing employees at an appliance manufacturer are told their fruit is free courtesy of the wellness program when they checkout in the company cafeteria. Their reactions are filmed and then made into a montage video, which is shared across the company.
4 Circle this
At a manufacturer of agricultural products, the HealthFitness staff simplifies the daily tracking sheets for challenges, such as weight loss, used with manufacturing employees. Workers simply have to circle images to track food and exercise, minimizing language, time and technology barriers for participants.
5 Hit and runs
At a large automotive plant, HealthFitness corporate fitness staff visit the employee cafeteria and randomly give out prizes to raise awareness of programs offered through the on-site fitness center and connect with employees one on one.
