1 Ensure your

business and social media

goals are aligned

Align your strategy with your business goals Ensure your goals are measurable and achievable E.g. I want to add 50 new Twitter followers by X date Or 50 new subscribers to my mailing list within the next month

(and put a date on there!)

2 Know your

clients

Draw up a description of your ideal client who should be someone you enjoy doing business with

Amelia Pond lives at 44 Acacia Avenue, London She is 34, married with two children and runs her own

business in her spare time. She shops at Sainsbury’s and collects coupons as money is

tighter now than it used to be. She struggles to find the time to do everything she wants

between looking after her family, house and business. She is an expert in… She needs help with…

Use your description to find more people like this client

380/20 rule

20% of your clients will bring in 80% of your business

Keep in touch with your clients Setup an email newsletter (Mailchimp is free) Create a blog (great for bringing traffic to your website if you

host it yourself and blog regularly) Think about how to get your existing clients to buy other

services from you. If you are a graphic designer and they have bought business cards, suggest flyers or a redesign of the website

4Monitor your

activity

There are lots of tools available to monitor when you are mentioned and far your influence goes. Ones I recommend include:

(Google Alert) When you are mentioned on the internet (Twilert) When you are mentioned on Twitter (Tweetreach)To monitor how far a tweet goes Klout and Kred can be interesting as they mention your overall

influence across social media

Don’t forget to setup Google Analytics on your website (if you can’t do this yourself then ask your website developer)

5Review your

strategy regularly

Review your social media strategy every 3 months or so to ensure

It still aligns with your company goals It is achieving the results you want Your goals are still relevant You are using the right social media channels (think about

checking out some of the newer ones like Pinterest) You know how your customers found you and focus effort on

the successful channels
