Unit 3 Test key and teacher’s notes5

1 This exercise reviews articles from lesson 3A. If SS get less than six right in this exercise, ask them to review the Grammar Reference on page 116 of the Student’s Book. After SS complete the test, you might like to teach the double meaning of hairy in the title. It can mean both with lots of hair and also dangerous.

1 his 5 a 8 Ø 2 Ø 6 Ø 9 the 3 the 7 an 10 Ø 4 a

2 This exercise reviews grammar from lesson 3B.

1 Would you mind taking the rubbish out? 2 I was wondering / I wonder whether we should

ask your mother for help. (Note that if SS write this sentence with a question mark, only award them ½pt)

3 Do you mind going to the supermarket for me? 4 Would you like me to help (you) with your

homework? 5 Do you know if the shops are open on Sunday?

3 This exercise reviews grammar from lessons 3D and 3E.

1 had scored 4 wouldn’t make 2 would have been 5 had never sent 3 had had

4 This exercise reviews Word Bank 11 on page 70 of the Student’s Book.

1 temperature 3 hypochondriac 5 fever 2 sneeze 4 patient

5 This exercise reviews Word Bank 12 on page 71 of the Student’s Book.

1 about 3 to 5 about 2 in 4 for

6 This exercise reviews Word Bank 13 on page 71 of the Student’s Book.

1 piercing 3 scar 5 stubble 2 tattoo 4 wig

7 This exercise reviews Word Bank 14 on page 72 of the Student’s Book.

1 wooden 3 heavy 5 silk 2 blunt 4 aluminium

8 The first reading task tests global understanding of the text. This text reviews the theme of gadgets from lesson 3E, the Present perfect continuous from lesson 3C and describing objects from Word Bank 14.

1 False 3 True 5 False 2 False 4 True 6 True

9 The second reading task asks SS to look more closely at the text and extract specific information.

After the test, teach SS the phrasal verb to shave off (to remove hair completely by shaving).

1 He felt scared. 2 You hear it through the bones in your head. 3 It’s smaller and more convenient. 4 It’s made of metal, plastic and rubber. (Note: SS

must write all three materials to get this question correct.)

5 You can’t use it outside the water (in the open air). 6 He’s going to shave (off) his sideburns.

10The recording reviews the theme of buskers and street entertainers and the use of the Present perfect continuous from lesson 3C. It also further reviews words for illnesses from Word Bank 11, and words for the face and appearance from Word Bank 13. It also serves as a preparation task for the following speaking task, where SS reproduce a similar conversation.

1 newsagent’s 5 working on the computer 2 sore throat 6 flu 3 five hours 7 contact lenses 4 headache 8 fringe

11For the speaking tasks, put SS in pairs. If you have an odd number of SS in your class, make one group of three. These SS will be able to do the task in the same way as a pair, except that they will talk about one more job in the first exercise.

Give SS a minute or two to prepare their thoughts (without writing anything down) before the conversation begins.

SS compare and contrast the pictures. SS should role-play the jobs as if they have been doing one of the jobs in the pictures. They need to describe how they are feeling, and why.

In the second stage of the conversation, SS discuss the good/bad points of each picture. They should also say which job they would prefer to do. SS may not know exactly when to change from the first to the second part of the task, so you may need to prompt the change in the conversation (do not deduct any points for having to intervene at this stage).

10pts, divided like this:

• 2pts for pronunciation and not pausing too much

• 2pts for interaction (listening to their partner, and asking questions): If SS have a very uncommunicative partner, award them 2pts if they make an effort to help their partner speak.

• 2pts for using a wide range of vocabulary and expressions

• 2pts for using a wide range of tenses, including

the Present perfect continuous to describe continuous events that lead up to the present, or which have a present result

• 2pts for successfully completing the task (doing the role-play, then describing the pictures and choosing one that they prefer)

12This exercise reviews Writing 3 from page 62 of the Student’s Book. It also reviews irregular verbs from lesson 3F and Word Bank 21. SS write a biography of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.

Give 10pts for the written work, divided like this:

• 2pts for spelling, paragraphing and punctuation

• 2pts for range of vocabulary

• 3pts for using a range of past forms, especially the correct use of irregular past forms (note that many of the prompts given are irregular verbs)

• 3pts for successfully completing the task (in this case, arranging the notes into a coherent biography and including all the information in the prompts)

Clare Hi, Havel! How are you? Oh! Look at all this money!Havel Oh, hi Clare. Yeah, it’s been a good week for me. Clare It’s amazing. What have you been doing?Havel I’ve been busking.Clare Wow, you must be really good.Havel Well, maybe. But I found a good position, right outside a newsagent’s.Clare Why was that good?Havel Lots of people gave me their change when they came out of the shop. I must have

earned almost £400 today. If I’d known about the newsagent’s last week, I’d have made a fortune!

Clare Wow, that’s really great. Havel I earned more money yesterday though, because I couldn’t sing today. I’ve got a bit of

a sore throat.Clare Oh yeah, I can hear it. Havel I’ve been playing for almost five hours a day and it gets really tiring. Clare I bet. I feel exhausted myself, and I’ve got a headache.Havel Oh, Poor you. Why’s that?Clare I’ve been working on the computer all day. Havel Really.Clare Yeah. My boss isn’t at work because she’s got flu, so I have to do the work of two

people!Havel It’s no wonder you feel exhausted! Do you take a lot of breaks?Clare Breaks? I didn’t even have time for lunch. I’m starving!Havel Actually, your eyes are very red too.Clare Are they? I hadn’t noticed.Havel Yes, they are. Do you wear contact lenses?Clare Yes, I do.Havel Maybe you should use glasses instead. Sometimes contact lenses aren’t good for

your eyes if you have to work for a long period of time.Clare Do you think so? But I don’t really like wearing glasses. I used to wear them all the

time at school, and I had this horrible fringe as well. I didn’t like my look back then.Havel That was a long time ago. If your eyes hurt, you should do something about it.Clare Yeah, I suppose you’re right.Havel It’s your choice. Anyway, we’ve waiting here for ages and we haven’t been served yet.

I don’t know about you but I need a nice cool drink.Clare Oh yes, me too. Let’s order.
