Draw a line along the 50th parallel north and look at everything above – that is our specialist region. At 50 Degrees North we have developed an excep-tional concept specialising in this unique, beautiful and sometimes extremely remote area of the world. It is an area of distinct seasons where light plays a more significant part of life than anywhere else. It is a region where we have a public holiday on the day the sun re-emerges back over the horizon after a long winter; it is where the northern light will throw waves of purple and green light across the sky in an incredible spectacle.

The brochure you are now holding in your hands is unique. It is dedicated to the phenomena of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). This is because the northern winter of 2011/2012 is predicted to display some of the most intense occurrences of Aurora Borealis in over a decade, as the 11 year

cycle of the sun comes to its peak. The main cause of the Northern Light is the number of dark spots on the surface of the sun, i.e. the more spots the better chance of Auroras. The northern winter 2011/12 is nearing this so called Solar Maximum.

These natural displays of green, white and purple light occur most frequently in the Polar Regions in a 2500 km radius off the geomagnetic pole. The zone with the most intense sightings of Aurora Borea-lis extends over Lapland in northern Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, Alaska and Siberia. As it happens this is our specialist area.

Remember, it has to be dark, it has to be cool, and it has to be clear. Then, there is nowhere like it. Set fire to your senses, join us 50 Degrees North and go further...

New Moon Northern Winter 2011/1227 Sep, 26 Oct, 25 Nov, 24 Dec, 23 Jan, 21 Feb, 22 Mar, 21 Apr

Full Moon Northern Winter 2011/12 12 Sep, 12 Oct, 10 Nov, 10 Dec, 9 Jan, 7 Feb, 8 Mar, 6 Apr

The period between November and April are generally the best months to see the Northern Lights, and nights closest to full moon should be avoided as this brightens the sky. The Northern Light emits more concentrated colours and longer experiences on the eve of a new moon.

Temperatures are average for the cities listed, and note that inland temperatures will be lower than coastal. E.g. Tromsø is further north than Rovaniemi, but Tromsø is coastal.

On days that indicate very short time of actual sunlight, it is important to note that as the sun trajectory is fairly flat there is a long dawn and a long dusk. The actual time of daylight hours, therefore, are considerably longer.

“We were struck by the Aurora spectacle over the Icehotel – it was absolutely incredible seeing the whole sky turning green and purple. We wished they’d stayed longer, but then we had

another Aurora moment while staying in fisherman’s cottages in the Lofoten islands. We got out in our pyjamas.

It is an adventure we’ll never forget”

Aurora happens when the sun sends off particles into space. These particles are charged, and form what is called ‘solar wind’. When solar wind hits Earth’s magnetic field in the Polar areas, where the magnetic shield is less powerful, it collides with particles in our at-mosphere and creates electricity and light. It is this light that we see as the Northern Light, or Aurora Borealis. An Aurora can also occur when the charged particles rip through the electromagnetic field because of their power.

The science and legends

The ancient people were awed by the Aurora. Aurora was the Roman goddess of the dawn. Boreal is a Latin word, meaning ‘north’ - thus, the northern lights.

The Finnish name for the lights, ‘revontulet’, comes from a Sami leg-end whereby the tail of a fox running along snow-covered fells strikes the snow drifts, sending a trail of sparks into the sky. Revontulet literally means ‘foxfire’. The Vikings believed the Aurora was the beautiful maidens called Valkyries, which escorted those killed in battle to the gods. The Sami people of Lapland believed they had power over the lights, and whistling under them would cause them to come closer. Many ancient peoples would not stare at or speak of the Aurora, due to a fear of insulting their divine nature.

The original ICEHOTEL is located as far as 200km inside the Arctic Circle, in the little village of Jukkas-järvi, and on the banks of Torne River. This place has been a crossroads and marketplace for the reindeer herders, the Sami, and fur traders for more than 400 years. Historically, few tourists have visited Jukkasjär-vi throughout its long, cold and snowy winters. How-ever, in 1989, the ICEHOTEL was created for the first time and it turned the seasons on their head, making the northern winter the peak tourist season. 2011/12 marks the 22nd anniversary of the yearly rebuilding of the ICEHOTEL, which has become one of the world’s largest ice structures.

In winter Iceland’s mountainous interior hides a few rare treasures under a layer of snow and ice. Howev-er, these magical places are not so easily accessed. That is why we use impressive 4x4 super-jeeps to reach these locations. Here other adventures await: walking in snowshoes through landscapes that are held in winter’s frozen grips and open air baths in natural hot springs. You will see waterfalls of all shapes and sizes where water and ice form magical sculptures, vapor clouds that burst out from earth’s interior, solfataras, mud pots and geysers that are strangely spectacular in the winter season.

A visit to Kangerlussuaq is almost like travelling in time – as we find ourselves surrounded by a land-scape similar to the ice age where prehistoric Musk Oxen are seen in front of massive glaciers and the gi-gantic Inland Ice Cap covering 85% of Greenland. Its location about 160km from the coast makes Kanger-lussuaq one of the most weather stable destina-tions in Greenland - and with a proportionally large number of starry nights, this makes Kangerlussuaq one of the best destinations in the world to experi-ence the Northern Light. During the last 10 seasons the vast majority of clients staying a minimum of 4 nights in Kangerlussuaq have experienced the amaz-ing Aurora Borealis.

Stay warm & comfortable in the ArcticAs the Nordic people know all too well, it is important to stay warm, cozy and comfortable when visiting the Arctic and coming to see the Northern Lights. This is why we have paid particular attention to choosing accommodation that will serve this purpose. Cabins will have open fire places and often attached saunas or hot tubs. All accommodation is comfortably heated (except the ICEHOTEL), and warm doonas and/or blan-kets are provided. Below is a presentation of some of the accommodation you will enjoy during our trips.

These designed log houses at the Engholm Husky lodge all have their own individual charm with each house having a unique and personal atmosphere. The cabins are all fully equipped with shower, toilet, mini-kitchen, TV and sitting room with an open fireplace. Each cabin has a different bedding configuration. Both double and twin cabins are available.

The Rorbu cabins are idyl-lically located between the quayside buildings and fish racks, with the sea on one side, and the the spectac-ular Lofoten mountains on the other. Each cabin has one to three double bed-rooms, a well-equipped kitchen cum lounge, and a modern bathroom with shower and toilet. Consid-erable emphasis has been placed on maintaining the authenticity of all the Rorbu cabins.

This is no doubt the most special hotel on Spits-bergen. The lodge is furnished with drift wood and board from Barentsburg, the Russian settlement on Spitsbergen, and slate stones and furs. No rooms are alike, except for the comfortable beds and bathrooms. The Cognac attic with the ceiling of glass, gives you a perfect view of the Arctic light.

General hotel standardOther than the uniquely hand picked accommodation as per above, the trips in this brochure stay in comfortable 3.5 to 4 star hotels. Hotels are chosen for their central location and charm. You can rest assured that the hotels are the best ones in their category as we appreciate the importance of a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Note that double beds in Scandinavia can often be made up of linking two twin beds together. Upon request, all tours can be upgraded to 4.5 or 5 star standard where available.

The ‘Noorderlicht’ pro-vides accommodation for 20 travellers in comfort-able twin cabins. All cabins have upper andlower berths, a cupboard and wash basin with hot and cold water. Shared shower (4) and toilet (5) facilities are conve-niently located. Instead of portholes, the cabins have frosted glass in the ceiling, where the play of daylight shines into the cabins.

We are doing our utmost to ensure the highest safety standards are met on all our tours. With 20 years experience in the industry we have chosen only the best local operators, who adhere to minimum safety and risk management measures. Good preparation is one of the keys to a safe and enjoyable tour, or expedition, and this is our priority.
