    SION vacuum circuit-breaker from 7.2 to 24 kV The Innovative

    Our comprehensive range of standard circuit-breakers offersa wide selection for pole-center distances and widths acrossflats as well as various built-in accessories packages forvoltage levels from 7.2 to 24 kV. The drawout element,contact arms, contact systems and bushings enable easyintegration in all customary medium-voltage switchgeartypes. Identical dimensions and connection dimensionsacross several voltage levels reduce planning costs and thediversity of panel versions. High reliability and availabilityare just as much a matter of course as 10,000 maintenance-free operating cycles.

    The slide-in module contains all components required forthe circuit-breaker compartment of a panel. It consists of thecircuit-breaker on a drawout element with contact arms,fitted in a cartridge with side and rear walls. The module isequipped with bushings, fixed contacts, shutters and theshutter mechanism. The surfaces of the side and rear wallsform the tested connection compartment.

    SION vacuum circuit-breakers control all switchingduties in medium-voltage distribution systems and aresuitable for installation in all customary air-insulatedmedium-voltage switchgear types. They are applicablefor operation of e.g. overhead lines, cables, transformers,

    capacitors, generators, filter circuits, motors andreactors. The comprehensive installation accessoriesenable easy integration in the panel and form maximally equipped as a slide-in module almost thecomplete circuit-breaker compartment.

    Switching medium

    The vacuum switching technology of the vacuum interrup-ters, which has been proven for 30 years, serves as arc-quenching principle.

    Pole assemblies

    The pole assemblies consist of the vacuum interrupters andthe pole shells. The vacuum interrupters are air-insulatedand freely accessible. The pole assemblies are fixed on themounting plate of the operating mechanism and supportedby means of the pole shell. The vacuum interrupter (3) ismounted rigidly to the upper interrupter support. The lowerpart of the interrupter is guided in the lower interruptersupport, allowing axial movement. The pole shell (4) absorbsthe external forces resulting from switching operations andthe contact pressure.

    Operating mechanism

    The whole operating mechanism is mounted on its mount-ing plate, including the motor, releases, indicators andactuating devices.

    Stored-energy operating mechanism

    The operating mechanism is a stored-energy spring mechan-ism. The force is transmitted from the operating mechan-ism to the pole assemblies via operating levers. The closingspring can be charged either electrically or manually andlatches automatically in when charging is complete. Theclosing spring acts as the stored-energy mechanism.

    To close the breaker, the closing spring can be unlatchedeither mechanically by means of the local ON pushbuttonor electrically by remote control. The closing spring chargesthe contact-pressure / opening springs as the breaker closes.The now discharged closing spring will be charged againautomatically by the mechanism motor.

    The breaker is now capable of performing the OPEN CLOSE OPEN operating sequence that is required for an unsuc-cessful auto-reclosing operation. All stored-energy mecha-nisms perform the switching duties of synchronizing andrapid load transfer as well as auto-reclosing.

    Trip-free mechanism

    In the event of an opening command being given after aclosing operation has been initiated, the moving contactsreturn to the open position and remain there even if theclosing command is sustained. This means that the contactsof the vacuum circuit-breakers are momentarily in the closedposition.

    The motors for charging the closing spring operate inshort-time duty. Therefore the voltage and power con-sumption might differ from the data of the rating plate.

    Releases

    A release is a device which transfers commands from anexternal source, such as a control room, to the latchingmechanism of the circuit-breaker so that it can be opened orclosed. The releases are designed for short-time duty up to1 minute and are reset internally. The various types ofreleases available are described in detail below:

    The closing solenoid unlatches the charged closing springof the vacuum circuit-breaker, closing it by electrical means.

    Shunt releases are used for automatic tripping of vacuumcircuit-breakers by suitable protection relays and for delib-erate tripping by electrical means. They are intended forconnection to an external power supply (DC or AC voltage)but, in special cases, may also be connected to a voltagetransformer for manual operation.

    Current-transformer operated releases comprise astored-energy mechanism, an unlatching mechanism, andan electromagnetic system. They are used when there is noexternal source of auxiliary power (e.g. a battery). Trippingis effected by means of a protection relay (e.g. overcurrent-time protection) acting on the current-transformer operatedrelease.

    Undervoltage releases comprise a stored-energy mecha-nism, an unlatching mechanism and an electromagneticsystem which is permanently connected to the secondary orauxiliary voltage while the vacuum circuit-breaker is closed.If the voltage falls below a predetermined value, unlatchingof the release is enabled and the circuit-breaker is openedvia the stored-energy mechanism.

    The maximum equipment are 2 freely selected releases. Forrelease combinations, refer to page 23 or page 32. For con-sumption data, refer to page 59.

    Closing / Circuit-breaker tripping signal

    In the standard version, the vacuum circuit-breakers can beremote-closed electrically. In addition, they can be mechani-cally closed locally by direct unlatching of the closing spring.

    If constant CLOSE and OPEN commands are present at thevacuum circuit-breaker at the same time, the vacuum circuit-breaker will return to the open position after closing. It re-mains in this position until a new CLOSE command is given.In this manner, continual closing and opening (= pumping)is prevented.

    The charging status of the closing spring in the vacuumcircuit-breaker can be interrogated electrically by means ofthe position switch.

    The NO contact S6 makes brief contact while the circuit-breaker is opening, and this is often used to operate ahazard-warning system which, however, is only allowed torespond to automatic tripping of the circuit-breaker. There-fore, the signal from the NO contact must be interruptedwhen the circuit-breaker is being opened intentionally. Thisis accomplished under local control with the cut-out switchS7 that is connected in series with the NO contact.

    Interlocking

    Mechanical interlocking

    At the interface of the mechanical interlocking of thevacuum circuit-breaker, sensors on the switchgear side cancheck the switch position and prevent the associated dis-connector from being closed while the vacuum circuit-breaker is closed. The system also prevents the vacuumcircuit-breaker from being closed while the associateddisconnector is in a faulty position.

    Vacuum circuit-breakers mounted on drawout elements aremechanically interlocked, with the result that the handle forracking the drawout element can only be inserted in theOPEN position. The lock of the drawout element can onlybe released in the disconnected position by operating thepushing handles.

    If the vacuum circuit-breaker on the drawout element is inan intermediate position (neither in the service nor in thedisconnected position), operation is not possible due to themechanical interlocking.

    Electrical interlocking

    The auxiliary and signaling contacts which show the switchposition of the vacuum circuit-breaker or the position of thedrawout element can be integrated in the switchgear inter-locking concept in order to exclude impermissible switchingsequences.

    Low-voltage interface

    The separate cover enables easy access to the low-voltageinterface. All possible customer-side control and signalingconnections are concentrated here.

    Slide-in module

    Besides the circuit-breaker installation equipment available forstandard circuit-breakers by means of the packages for thedrawout element, contact arms, fixed contacts and bushings,it is also possible to supply a complete slide-in module.

    The slide-in module contains all necessary components forthe circuit-breaker compartment of a panel. It consists of thecircuit-breaker on a drawout element with contact arms,mounted in a cartridge with side and rear walls, equippedwith bushings, fixed contacts, shutters and shutter mecha-nism. The surfaces of the side and rear walls form the testedconnection compartment.

    The vacuum circuit-breaker on the drawout element isracked into the cartridge with the associated handle by therotary movement of the spindle. The shutter mechanismis controlled by lateral gates, and the shutters are openedfor contacting. Signals for the service and disconnectedpositions are transmitted to the module connector at thelow-voltage interface of the vacuum circuit-breaker via theposition switches of the drawout element.

    Standards

    The vacuum circuit-breakers conform to the followingstandards:

    IEC 60 694 IEC 62 271-100All SION vacuum circuit-breakers fulfil the enduranceclasses E2, M2 and C2 according to IEC 62 271-100.

    The slide-in modules have been tested according to

    IEC 62 271-200 regarding Dielectric strength

    Temperature rise

    Switching capacity.

    Ambient conditions

    Condensation can occasionally occur under the ambientconditions shown opposite.

    SION vacuum circuit-breakers are suitable for use in thefollowing climatic classes according to IEC 60 721, Part 3-3:

    Climatic ambient conditions: Class 3K41)

    Biological ambient conditions: Class 3B1

    Mechanical ambient conditions: Class 3M2

    Chemically-active substances: Class 3C22)

    Mechanically-active substances: Class 3C23)

    1) Low temperature limit: - 5 C

    2) Without icing and wind-driven precipitation

    3) Restriction: Clean insulation parts

    Current carrying capacity

    The rated normal currents specified in the diagram havebeen defined according to IEC 62 271-100 for an ambienttemperature of + 40 C and apply to open switchgear.

    For enclosed switchgear the data of the switchgearmanufacturer applies.

    At ambient temperatures below + 40 C, higher normalcurrents can be carried (see diagram):

    Dielectric strength

    The dielectric strength of air insulation decreases withincreasing altitude due to low air density. According toIEC 60 694, the rated lightning impulse withstand voltagevalues specified in the chapter Technical Data apply to asite altitude of 1000 m above sea level. For an altitudeabove 1000 m, the insulation level must be correctedaccording to the opposite diagram.

    The characteristic shown applies to the rated short-durationpower-frequency withstand voltage and the rated lightningimpulse withstand voltage.

    To select the devices, the following applies:

    UW U0 x KaU Rated withstand voltage under standard reference atmosphere

    U0 Rated withstand voltage requested for the place of installation

    Ka Altitude correction factor according to the opposite diagram

    Example

    For a requested rated lightning impulse withstand voltageof 75 kV at an altitude of 2500 m, an insulation level of90 kV under standard reference atmosphere is required asa minimum:

    Order number structure

    The vacuum circuit-breakers consist of a primary and asecondary part. The relevant data make up the 16-digitorder number. The primary part covers the main electricaldata of the circuit-breaker poles. The secondary part coversthe auxiliary devices which are necessary for operating andcontrolling the vacuum circuit-breaker.

    Order codes

    Individual equipment versions, identified with 9 or Z in the9th or 16th position, are explained more in detail by a 3-digitorder code. Several order codes can be added to the ordernumber in succession and in any sequence.

    Special versions ()

    In case of special versions, -Z is added to the order num-ber and a descriptive order code follows. If several specialversions are required, the suffix -Z is listed only once.If a requested special version is not in the catalog and cantherefore not be ordered via order code, it has to be identi-fied with Y 9 9 after consultation. The agreement heretois made between your responsible sales partner and theorder processing department (PTD M C S) in our SwitchgearFactory in Berlin.

    Configuration example

    In order to simplify the selection of the correct order numberfor the requested circuit-breaker type, you will find a con-figuration example on each side of the chapter EquipmentSelection. For the selection of the secondary part, alwaysthe last example of the primary part was taken over andcontinued, so that at the end of the equipment selection(pages 27 and 36) a completely configured circuit-breakerresults as an example.

    When releases / solenoids are required as spare parts, theorder number and the type of construction of the asso-ciated standard circuit-breaker must also be specified.

    Remark for orders

    The order numbers are applicable to standard circuit-breakers of current manufacture. When mounting partsor spare parts are being ordered for an existing standardcircuit-breaker, always quote the type designation, serial No.,design code and the year of manufacture of the circuit-breaker to be sure to get the correct delivery.
