Chairman’sMessage from the Board

The news of the last 3 months is the advent of the new website. Although the address is the same, it is a much improved design, cleaner, easier to access both for those maintaining it and all that read it. The website can display videos and sound files to improve members’ experience, see page 6 for more detail.

Our coach outings have been so successful that we have had to order 2 coaches for one of our planned trips.

The costs of running the Network are substantial and the income not sufficient to run it indefinitely. The board therefore is currently considering various ways to raise funds as well as reducing costs; this may entail the introduction of a small annual membership fee.

We are also looking at our method of distributing the quarterly magazine. It is greatly valued by our members but expensive to deliver through the Royal Mail. Currently all members receive their

magazines by post. As the magazine is also available on our website, some of you may prefer to read it on-line. If so, please let us know and instead of mailing a copy, we will simply send you an email to advise you when the next issue is available.

We will however continue to deliver hard copies to members who prefer that method. We will also look at the possibility of using volunteers to hand-deliver in some areas. The total print run of the magazine will not reduce, so that more will be distributed to centres where people over 50 will be likely to read them and perhaps decide to join the Network.

Since this is last Magazine of 2014, may I on behalf of the board, wish all members and other readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Why do I need a Will?A properly drawn up Will is a written statement of your wishes. It comes into effect when you die and it sets out what you want done with your property after your death. Thus it enables you to make important decisions now that affect your family and friends after your death. It could also help protect your estate from unnecessary inheritance tax.

What if I die without a Will?Without a Will the Intestacy rules set out how your assets will be distributed amongst your relatives whether or not it would have been what you wanted.

One of the most common misconceptions is that if you die without a valid Will, all of your estate will automatically go to your surviving spouse. This is not the case. Your spouse could even end up with insufficient money to remain in the family home. The law does not provide in any way for unmarried partners or step-children, friends or charities that you might have provided for and if you have no surviving blood relatives then your estate goes to the Crown.

These same rules also specify who is responsible for the administration of your estate and this can often lead to practical and emotional difficulties where members of the group may not get on or even know each other.

The statutory rules make no provision about the future guardianship of your minor children. To get expert advice about making or updating your Will please call:

Finedon Community Centre. Wellingborough Road, Finedon NN9 5LG.

Billy Dean, a young British “Tommy” during WW1, gets separated from his battalion during an attack on an enemy position, and is subsequently sentenced to be shot for cowardice. The play starts the night before Billy’s execution, and through a series of flashbacks the action cross cuts between The Western Front and a Munitions Factory in England where Billy’s wife May works. Was Billy’s fate misfortune or cowardice? Tickets £7 each, call Pam: 01933 398377 or Lynn: 01933 680450.
