YOUR WAY. HillCountryNews A Leander High School gradu- ate is in the midst of a 10-month stint working at the Angelina National Forest in the East Texas Piney Woods with AmeriCorps. Avery Cline of Cedar Park is currently serving with the Na- tional Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), a, full-time AmeriCorps program. Founded in 1994, Amer- iCorps NCCC strengthens com- munities and develops its young adult members into leaders. “I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to do after high school, but I knew I wanted to help our environment,” said Cline who graduated from Leander High School in May 2020. “AmeriCorps NCCC stood out to me because many people had talked about the opportunity they had to help maintain the environment, and on top of that, it looked like a really fun and challenging way to find my passions and interests.” AmeriCorps recently cele- brated the service of the 270,000 Americans engaged in Ameri- Corps and AmeriCorps Seniors programs annually. Despite the unprecedented challenges posed in 2020, dedicated citizens contin- ue to help communities, serving those impacted by COVID-19, ensuring students stay on track to graduate, combating hunger and homelessness, responding to natural disasters, fighting the opioid epidemic, helping seniors live independently, supporting veterans and military families, and much more. AmeriCorps NCCC operates out of four campuses, which serve as regional administrative hubs and training facilities. ese campuses, located in Sacramento, Calif., Aurora, Colo., Vinton, Iowa, and Vicksburg, Miss., train and deploy new classes of members several times each year. Cline began her term of service on July 21, 2020 at the Southern Region campus in Vicksburg and will graduate from the program on May 6, 2021. As Corps Members, these young adults are completing a series of different six- to 12-week- long service projects in different places across their assigned regions as parts of 5- to 12-person teams. Projects support disaster relief, the environment, infra- structure improvement, energy conservation, and urban and rural development. More information about their specific service proj- ects is available upon request. AmeriCorps NCCC members complete at least 1,700 hours of service during the 10-month pro- gram. Corps Members are all 18 to 26 years old; there is no upper age limit for Team Leaders. In exchange for their service, all pro- gram participants receive $6,345 to help pay for college. Other benefits include a small living stipend, room and board, leadership development, team building skills, and the knowledge that, through active citizenship, they can indeed make a difference. AmeriCorps NCCC is one of hundreds of programs adminis- tered by the larger AmeriCorps agency. For more information about AmeriCorps NCCC, visit the website at www.americorps.gov/ nccc. STAFF REPORTS Leander HS grad serves community through AmeriCorps AMERICORPS/NCCC When Avery Cline graduated high school, she didn’t have a clear plan except to help the environment.

A Leander High School gradu-ate is in the midst of a 10-month stint working at the Angelina National Forest in the East Texas Piney Woods with AmeriCorps.

Avery Cline of Cedar Park is currently serving with the Na-tional Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), a, full-time AmeriCorps program. Founded in 1994, Amer-iCorps NCCC strengthens com-munities and develops its young adult members into leaders.

“I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to do after high school, but I knew I wanted to help our environment,” said Cline who graduated from Leander High School in May 2020. “AmeriCorps NCCC stood out to me because many people had talked about the opportunity they had to help maintain the environment, and on top of that, it looked like a really fun and challenging way to find my passions and interests.”

AmeriCorps recently cele-brated the service of the 270,000 Americans engaged in Ameri-Corps and AmeriCorps Seniors programs annually. Despite the unprecedented challenges posed in 2020, dedicated citizens contin-ue to help communities, serving those impacted by COVID-19, ensuring students stay on track to graduate, combating hunger and homelessness, responding to natural disasters, fighting the opioid epidemic, helping seniors live independently, supporting veterans and military families, and much more.

AmeriCorps NCCC operates out of four campuses, which serve as regional administrative hubs and training facilities. These campuses, located in Sacramento, Calif., Aurora, Colo., Vinton, Iowa, and Vicksburg, Miss., train and deploy new classes of members several times each year. Cline began her term of service on July 21, 2020 at the Southern Region

campus in Vicksburg and will graduate from the program on May 6, 2021.

As Corps Members, these young adults are completing a

series of different six- to 12-week-long service projects in different places across their assigned regions as parts of 5- to 12-person teams. Projects support disaster

relief, the environment, infra-structure improvement, energy conservation, and urban and rural development. More information about their specific service proj-ects is available upon request.

AmeriCorps NCCC members complete at least 1,700 hours of service during the 10-month pro-gram. Corps Members are all 18 to 26 years old; there is no upper age limit for Team Leaders. In exchange for their service, all pro-gram participants receive $6,345 to help pay for college.

Other benefits include a small living stipend, room and board, leadership development, team building skills, and the knowledge that, through active citizenship, they can indeed make a difference.

AmeriCorps NCCC is one of hundreds of programs adminis-tered by the larger AmeriCorps agency. For more information about AmeriCorps NCCC, visit the website at www.americorps.gov/nccc.
