We Should Glory in the Cross
Performance NotesGabe Huck’s The Three Days continues to be an invaluable resource for anyone who is involvedwith the preparation of Triduum. The second chapter suggests that the text to the opening song forHoly Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper be drawn from the opening antiphon: “We shouldglory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, our life and our resurrection;through him we are saved and made free.” (Galatians 6:14) This antiphon captures the theme ofthe entire three days. For this reason the refrain text of this song reflects the words from theantiphon. The text to the verses, on the other hand, is paraphrased from a sixth-century hymn, alsosuggested by Huck as an appropriate text for the Triduum. It should be noted, however, that thesinging of this piece is not limited to Holy Thursday, but includes the Easter season as well asother liturgical feasts, e.g. Triumph of the Cross (September 14).
Liturgies that call for a more triumphant character may opt for the written introduction for brass. If, on the other hand, this piece is to be sung as the opening procession for Holy Thursday, youmay want to simply play the refrain as an introduction. This option is in keeping with theprogressive solemnity of the Triduum, suspending any triumphant instrumentation for the EasterVigil and/or the Sundays of the Easter season. Progressive solemnity could easily be applied to thetempo as well. If, for example, this piece is sung during Holy Thursday, you may opt for a slowertempo and/or the addition of one trumpet part. As for the endings, I applied the principle ofstructural composing by having the first ending be used for Holy Thursday. This endingintentionally ends on the dominant chord since Holy Thursday marks only the beginning of theTriduum celebration. I wanted to leave the assembly with the feeling that the Triduum celebrationhas not yet ended but continues until the peak of the Vigil service. The second ending (Amen)could be used during Ordinary Time. The third ending (Alleluia) could be used during the Easterseason or for particular feasts. The recording of this piece features the brass introduction and theAlleluia ending, slowly building up to a climax in order to present the full range of interpretation.
