LITURGY GUIDE—13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Welcome to the Cathedral of St. Joseph and thank you for joining us for the celebration of Holy Mass today! Please silence your cell phones and refrain from eating, drinking or chewing gum in the Cathedral. Please help keep our Cathedral tidy by utilizing the waste baskets found near the main entrances. Also, please refrain from taking pictures once Mass has begun. You are welcome to take pictures after Mass has concluded.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING 1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21 The Lord said to Elijah: “You shall anoint Elisha, son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah, as prophet to succeed you.” Elijah set out and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen; he was following the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and I will follow you.” Elijah answered, “Go back! Have I done anything to you?” Elisha left him, and taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and gave it to his people to eat. Then Elisha left and followed Elijah as his attendant.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-11 (Refrain sung first by cantor, then congregation repeat)

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord.” O Lord, it is you who are my por-

tion and cup; you yourself who secure my lot. R.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel, who even at night directs my heart. I keep the Lord before me always; with him

at my right hand, I shall not be moved. R.

And so, my heart rejoices, my soul is glad; even my flesh shall rest in hope. I keep the Lord before me always; with him at

my right hand, I shall not be moved. R.

You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your

presence, at your right hand, bliss forever. R.

SECOND READING Galatians 5:1, 13-18 Brothers and sisters: For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, You shall love your neigh-bor as yourself. But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another. I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh. For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want. But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please Stand (Sung first by cantor, then congregation repeat)

Speak, Lord, your servant is listening; you have the words of

everlasting life. R.

PENITENTIAL ACT

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking breast three times) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Celebrant: Pray brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.

R. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR AND GIFTS

OFFERTORY HYMN KINGSFOLD 572 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say

GOSPEL Luke 9:51-62 When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled, he res-olutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent mes-sengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jeru-salem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to con-sume them?” Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to anoth-er village. As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” And to another he said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” And another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” To him Jesus said, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”

HOMILY

PROFESSION OF FAITH Please Stand I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow here) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

AGNUS DEI

HOLY COMMUNION

All Catholics who have prepared themselves to receive Holy Communion are invited to come forward. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to approach with arms crossed over the chest to signal their desire to receive a blessing.

ECCE AGNUS DEI

Celebrant: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

R. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Jesus said in the Gospel, “I am the way, and the truth,

and the life: no one comes to the Father, but through

me.” (John 14:6). Over the past two years, it has been an

honor and privilege to journey in the way, truth, and life

of Jesus Christ with the Cathedral of Saint Joseph Par-

ish. I am particularly grateful to the families and individ-

uals who have demonstrated their sincere love of God

and the Church. Most impressive are the people in the

parish who have expressed the sincere desire to become

a Saint.

Over my time at the Cathedral I have encountered peo-

ple who exhibit profound spiritual depth and holiness.

Many of these people live on the margins of our parish

and you might not even recognize that they are on the

path to sainthood. They are the silent witnesses who

demonstrate absolute fidelity to the teachings of the

Church and complete abandonment to God’s will for

their lives. Brothers and sisters, the greatest tragedy in

human life is not to become a saint. It has been an abso-

lute privilege to pray and journey with every person who

is seeking the Truth of the Gospel. Truth is the con-

formity of the mind to reality. Through the triumph of

the Cross, Jesus Christ will continue to transform human

hearts and minds to the reality of God’s plan of Salva-

tion. Pray that the Church will continue to proclaim the

Truth of the Gospel, and lead all souls into heaven, espe-

cially those in most need of God’s mercy.

Fr. Timothy Smith

As we write our final bulletin letters as parochial vicars

of this parish, the Sunday Lectionary provides us with an

interesting Gospel: “No one who sets a hand to the plow

and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom

of God.” God continues to call us onward, farther north,

farther west, but you and your families, the Cathedral

Parish and the leadership of Bishop Swain and Fr. Mor-

gan will always be with us, as among the instruments

God used to shape us into the priests we are today.

I’m not an overly expressive person, so I thank you for

your patience with me during my time here. Please do

know of my sincere gratitude and admiration for the

faith and willingness to serve that I have witnessed in so

many of you and your families. I was glad to be here for

the 100th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathe-

dral. What a legacy of faith, beauty, and endurance that

has been handed down to us! Be assured of my contin-

ued prayers in the years ahead that we will all be able to

respond generously to the invitation of Christ, to store

up treasure in heaven and truly strive for life beyond the

limits of this passing world.

Thank you. May God bless and keep you. May our

Blessed Mother and St. Joseph watch over and guide

you, even as they were privileged to watch over God In-

carnate, Jesus, who lives and reigns forever. Amen.

Fr. Darin Schmidt

The 500 Club The fifth winner of the 500 Club for June 2019 is Joyce Stephens. She’ll receive a check for $84 and we gave Father $365 for the church. Our hope is to have 200 members so the weekly winner will receive $115 and Father will receive $500 for the church. It’s only $5/month to join and is a fun way to provide a little extra support to the church. So far we’ve given the church more than $73,000 over almost 20 years! Applications are available in the Narthex (Duluth Ave. entrance) or the Parish Office. Those received by June 28 will be eligible for the July drawings. For more information, call Verlyn Curley at 334-2305.

Women’s Program has concluded for the year! The group will be reading a book on the Beatitudes over the summer, on their own.
