J .N e il Boss Esq., P .O .Box 3033, North .End,p o r t m j z a b l i ;:.

Uy dear ’»ir. Boss,

I received your letter of recent date upon my return fromCape Town where I iad spent the week leading the Deputation of the African National Congress when they made representations before the Deputy Prime Minister.

As I promised you, I am now in r position to give you mycandid opinion and, as I considei you a personal friend and a man in whom 1 have a. great deal of confidence, I feel the t I cr-n speak quite frankly.

I consulted many of my African and people of influence directly or indirectly so far as the raa____ his elections is concerned.

1 found that, whereas the older and conservative group in theTranskei were Inclined to support Mr. Moult Young, a former Chief Magistrate of toe Transkein territory, that the majority of far-sighted people among us had pledged toemselves in favour of Advocate Douglas Bu

chanan K .C . of Cape Town, an old friend of mine and a man who has, like you,spareJ ^ --- " . . .

upon had nireaay oeen committed to him. An effort is n~>v* being made to induce Mr. Young to stand down and leave the field clear for Mr. Buchanan. However, the Bhunga members are the key to t>iat.

I am afr^fd that be d ifficult, and perhaps unfortunate,at this stage, for me to endeavour to use my influence against this ac tion.

I was with air. v£amata in Cape Town and lied with him fromthere to De Aar, and we tnoroughly discussed the question, and rhile hedid not cocan it himself, It is quite clerr that they are generally convinced against i'r. Young ir. favour of Advocate Bucoanan.

J . Hell Boas Esq, - 2 - 10th "arch, 19*2.

In view of the^e frets, I deeply regret to tell you that I believe It- will be most unwl3e for you to continue your candida

ture.

Yon are too valuable a nan to suffer drfoat.

Many of us apprecaite you very much and would not iHKSe you to lose bo til money and time jy l be disappointed. Besides, v;e do not want you to lose faith i n , * ^ '.isunders tand, toe African people if

the did not 'save you returned during tie coning elections.

Our people are grateful for all you iave done; but at this

stage toe scale sesEis weigoted against you.

Confidentially, you have been unfortunate in the choice of the Committee that is acting on y u r behalf. It if composed Irrgely of a majority of clever people but people who have no influence among the

people anywhere. In fact the association of your name with them is , unfortunately, a liability for you and tends to repel rether than attract

any voter? for you,

I would, therefore, advise against lavish use of your money on certain people who may have :v..> more interest in your candidature except

what they can get out of it ,

Ciis is strictly confidential and is ray personal but honest

view of toe situation.

I f , however, the Provincial elections were to take place, which

seems unlikely, I vould have advised you to contest Mr, Burman’ s seat and, i f successful, you would be in line for greater honours if and when a srirjancy appeared whether in the Senate or in the Touse of Assembly

We are interested in you and we rre hoping that some day opportunity may present itself for a man of your type to serve South Africa by representing the African community.

You may take this letter as advice from ncere friend and

your well-wisher,

I am,

Yours very sincerely,

REPORT:

* CROaiLl ’ COMMUNITY CLIi'IC( Prom let. September 1940 to 10th M^rch 1942.)

This report covers the period from the first of September 1940

to the current month. The period has been one of steady development

for the institution. This growth has been seen in spite of

insufficient equipment and limited staff.

The 3taff: The Clinic enjoys the services of the Medical

Off leer j g B Ilo.-I n, Dr. A.B. Xuma, the Nursing Superintendent, Sister

Grace E. Wares, and Nurse Ethel Nkomo. In March 1941 the Doctor's

Visit were increased from once to twice per wsek. This has enabled

the Clinic to do a more valuable service in reaching the need of the

Evaton Community. In September 1941 a third nurse was added to the

staff. The third nurse is Nurse Eunice 3tofile, for;ae-' staff nurse

of the Umtata Hospital. Nurse Stofliesfetottflteneral Nursing and

Midwifery. The addition of the third nurse has made It possible to

'^entend^he Clinic services into the neighboring fp-rm areas.

E-manslon of Health Service: One of the successful efforts to

expand the service has been that of visitation to the homes of the

small farms area, acquainting the villagers with the purpose of the

Clinic and the type of service rendered, as well as treating patients

In these distant areas. The purchase of a bycycle has greatly

facilitated this project.

Ante-l'iatal Classes for mother including sewing and cooking

have been hnld. Hother$h:.ve taken the keenest interest in these

classes.

A child Welfare Clinic has been established at the Newlands

Ihe Honorary Treasurer,Bantu Welfare Trust,P.O.Box 1176,JOHANNESBURG.

Dear Sir,

My attention has just been called to the fact that no acknowledgement of the receipt of a cheque for £50 *-hich your ^frust was good and considerate enough to grant to the African National Congress, had been made.

I can assure you that this sum will be used in rendering valuable service towards the advancement of the African people and the amelioration or removal of some their disabilities.

Thanking you again,

I am,

Yours sincerely,

*
