This Fine Wine List is a family affair. We believe that of all the promises a bottle of

wine can offer, from the consistency of taste of a big brand to the generic power

of an iconic appellation like Chablis or Champagne, the most reassuring is the

presence of a tried and trusted name on the label.

The long-held principles and sense of tradition that define a family business are

perhaps the strongest brand values that exist in the wine world. This is the DNA,

too precious to tinker with, that makes a leading Bordelais dynasty, for example,

equally successful at the other end of the world. Names that instantly spring to

mind are Rothschild (p12) and Lurton (p10), whose portfolios range from great

growths on both sides of the Gironde to South America, and from fine Claret to

luscious dessert wine.

Burgundy is a region dominated by family businesses on a much smaller scale.

On p13, an extensive mixed case offer from the utterly charming 2006 vintage, five

years on, is populated by names you can trust absolutely: de Montille in Volnay

and Grivot in Vosne-Romanée, passed from fathers to sons; Gouges in Nuits-

Saint-Georges, now in its fourth generation; Pierre Morey in Meursault, both as

grower, and partner in the family’s négociant arm, Morey-Blanc. The Rhône, too,

is rich in family tradition, especially in Châteauneuf-du-Pape (p7), home of the

Boirons of Bosquet des Papes and the Gonnets of Domaine Font de Michelle.

This section has earned its placethanks to the dramaticimprovement in the quality ofAntipodean chardonnay inrecent years. In Australia,especially in cooler sites such asTasmania and Margaret River,there has been a chardonnayrenaissance with modernexamples focusing on texture,structure and restraint. NewZealand’s winemakers areproving their skill in handling thisnoble grape too. We wouldeven go as far as saying thatNew Zealand chardonnay nowdeserves more of the limelightthan the country’s excellentheadlining sauvignon blancs.There is a lot of truth in whatTim Finn of Neudorf describes as‘the end of the oakey, blokey,clumsy chardonnays’ of yorewith a welcome return to winesof great refinement and poise.

New winemaker Tim Heath has made a lovely 2009 which is delicious now. The style he has created is produced by adding a small portion of later picked and barrel-fermented sauvignon blanc to the tank-fermented wine to increase the breadth offlavour. Now to 2012. 13.5% Three bottles only per member.

CLOUDY BAY FAMILY TREE

The impact of Cloudy Bay on New Zealand’s wine industry has been phenomenal. The estateforged the country’s reputation for outstanding sauvignon blanc and firmly established theMarlborough region on the fine wine map. As is often the case with trailblazers, many of thepeople behind the winery’s initial success have gone on to establish names in their own right. Dog Point and Isabel Estate’s vineyards,for example, were original sources of Cloudy Bay’s grapes, but they now bottle under their own names to great acclaim. Kevin Juddwas Cloudy Bay’s first and longest-standing winemaker; he now makes wines only under his own Greywacke label. The originalcreator of Cloudy Bay, David Hohnen, is currently concentrating on his family’s vines back in Western Australia.

A passion for quality at every level and viticultural and winemaking craftsmanship of the highest order are the common themes at allthese properties.

The Avignon Popes knew a thing or two about wine and were not slow torecognise the potential that existed on this extraordinary plateau in Provence. What makes the difference is the especially complex and varied terroir, and the bestwines are nearly always the result of blending not just grape varieties but also fruitfrom various soil types and exposures. Escaravailles, 2004 Gilles Ferran is an outstanding producer in Cairanne and Rasteau. He picks late and very ripe and makes thick, creamy wines with soft tannins. 80% old-vine grenache and20% syrah. Drink this year. 15%

Janasse wines are in a league of their own. The wines are all deeply coloured andimmensely full bodied. This Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is Châteauneuf-like with anabundance of rich, mouth-filling fruit. Now to 2016. 14.5%

Impressive, grenache-dominated southern Rhône on a large scale. Les Pallières is the best-known estate in Gigondas and has vines in the best areas, mostly high up in among the sun-baked Dentelles de Montmirail. Now to 2017. 14.5%

Louis Barruol combines elegance and power to perfection. He made wonderful Gigondasin 2006. His first cuvée is very sensuous and sweetly flavoured. Now to 2019. 14%

We buy two reds from this outstanding estate in Minervois. Cantilène is the top wine.The proportion of syrah is high and the wine is raised in small oak barriques. A lovely,full-bodied red which is round, rich and satisfying. Now to 2015. 14%

J-FC20221 Corbières, Grande Cuvée, Castelmaure, 2008 £11.95 bottle £143 dozen

It doesn’t get much wilder than in this remote part of the Corbières, where a spirit oftrue solidarity seems to exist like nowhere else. All the wine is made by the co-op,which is one of the best in France. This is one of their top wines and is very full bodied,rich and deeply expressive with smooth, ripe tannins. Now to 2012. 14.5%

Weighty, intense mourvèdre-dominated red from a top estate in Saint-Chinian. This willkeep well but the 2008 can be enjoyed already now. Best decanted and served withlamb tagine. Now to 2019. 14.5%

One of the discoveries of the vintage with lovely round supple fruit and spicy texture.7% old-vine malbec adds special fruit quality to the traditional 48% cabernet sauvignonand 45% merlot. A real triumph for Sophie and Laurent Lurton-Cogombles and alreadydelicious when tasted last autumn. 2013 to 2023. 13%

This fine, elegant and stylish troisième cru Margaux is owned by Denis Lurton; anexcellent follow-on for those who discovered and enjoyed the delicious 2000 vintage.Now to 2017. 13%

J-CM9781 Château Durfort-Vivens, 2000, Margaux £35 bottle £420 dozen

Gonzague Lurton, husband of Claire Villars, has transformed the quality of this second-growth property. His 2000 shows wonderful individuality and distinction withlovely length and ‘middle’ to the palate. The quality of both the cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc was exceptional. Now to 2020. 12.5%

Château Brane-Cantenac, 2004, MargauxA wine of great charm, full, ripe and supple with engaging floral bouquet and finelength. Henri Lurton is a sensitive producer who has been delighting members withvintage after vintage from this approachable second growth. Now to 2018. 13% This wine is only available in mixed case J-MX1184.

LURTON FAMILY VALUES

Lurton is one of the great and far-reaching family names ofBordeaux. It stands for outstandingquality, often with a sprinkling ofinnovation, dynamism and sheerclass thrown in. The family tree iscomplex with numerous fineproperties managed, owned,bought, sold, or handed downthrough five generations. Today, itis the younger generation who arein the spotlight. All have more thanearned their stripes – fromBérénice, the youngest of LucienLurton’s ten children when shetook over the running of the greatBarsac estate, Climens, at thetender age of 22; to Sophie andher husband Laurent, who haveraised Bouscaut to be one of thebest châteaux of the Pessacappellation; to the dizzy heights of Cheval Blanc and Yquem, now managed by their cousin,Pierre Lurton.

Carruades de Lafite – a notable omission here – is soprized in the Far East that its upward-spiralling price is out-of-date as soon as it is printed. The quality and reputation of thegreat châteaux in the Lafite stable – Duhart Milon, Rieussec,and Lafite itself – is unquestioned. This case is essentially for enjoyment over the next year or so, but there is no need to drink it all at once. Start with the dense, lovelyfruit of the two Moret-Nominé whites and work up to Pierre Morey’s steelier Meursaults. Among the reds, the Chassagne is a juicyjoy, while the Nuits Grandes Vignes and Louis Boillot’s Volnay are perhaps best saved until last. Etienne Grivot’s sumptuous Vosne-Romanée is still improving in bottle, but indulgent of anyone who can’t wait.

The black wine of Cahors was a favourite in this country during the Middle Ages. Jean-Luc Baldès has tried to recreate the style which was achieved by heating part ofthe must to extract more colour without any hard tannins. This is intense, very dark andfull in flavour with sweet black cherries coming to mind. Now to 2025. 13.5%

MAGNIFICENTMALBEC

Once planted in Bordeaux, malbec made its name asthe principal constituent of Cahors. Due to its sensitivityto poor set, frost, downy mildew and rot, it was bettersuited to the conditions of inland Cahors than those ofcoastal Bordeaux. It was the foundation of the ‘blackwine of Cahors’, when vines in Bordeaux were grownon the palus and produced pale and pink wines calledclairet (from which we get the English word ‘claret’).Malbec can be powerful, with firm and sometimesquite rustic tannins in France, but with great charactertoo, and is often blended with merlot to soften it.

Nowadays Argentina grows three times as muchmalbec as France, so there is a much bigger gene poolfrom which very interesting selections have been made,notably by Catena, who narrowed down about 200original selections to about eight. These excellent plantselections and the warmer climate generally producesofter, richer and more aromatic wines than in France.Its characteristic violet aromas can resist temperaturesup to 33°C, and the existence of many old vineyards(the Mendel Unus is made from a malbec vineyardplanted in 1928) explain the success of malbec inArgentina. In Mendoza, Alta Mira is producing lovelyfloral styles of malbec, with more structure and gripcoming from Lunlunta, Agrelo and Perdriel.

I always ‘cut’ this classic malt, from the northern most of Orkney’s two distilleries, withsome soft spring water to reduce it to about 20% for the nose and flavour to show attheir best. For me this accentuates the hint of green apples and nuts on the nose. Possibly our most eclectic range yet, and a fair bit of varietal one-upmanship, with Alsace and Western Australia laying claim toriesling, Sancerre and California doing the same for sauvignon blanc, New Zealand and Oregon fencing with pinot noir, and Cornaslocking horns with McLaren Vale for best shiraz. Hungary appears to be safe for the moment with kékfrankos, the grape behind ournew Hungarian coup de coeur, though its Austrian alter ego, blaufränkisch, has been known to appear on this page. How toapproach such diversity? With a mixed case, of course, either the suggested red mix opposite, or a more personal selection which youcan now store in our Members’ Reserve cellars for future enjoyment.

Alcohol levelsAlcohol percentage by volume is indicated foreach wine or spirit. Occasionally there will beslight variations from the published figure. Alcohol levels are only a guide to a wine’s fullness;other factors such as tannin and extract in redwines also contribute to overall impression ofweight and the note on the wine should makethis clear. Units of alcohol are increasingly printedon wine labels. A UK unit of alcohol is simplymeasured by multiplying alcohol by volume. Thus a standard 13% 75cl bottle of wine willcontain 9.7 units of alcohol.

The UK governmentrecommends thatmen do not regularlyexceed 3-4 units aday, and that womendo not regularlyexceed 2-3 units a day. It alsorecommends thatpregnant women donot drink alcohol.

Any 12 bottles can be selected, storedand drawn out when desired. See our website for more details. Members canalso remove a few bottles of a full case stored in Reserves. Wines removed inthis way need to be made up into 12-bottle cases using no more than fourdifferent wines from the member’s unmixed cases stored in Reserves.
