FOREWORDMEDHERB Green Pages has been doing yeoman's service for the Medicinal Plant sector for over a decade. A dedicated team of green missionaries continually chart aspects of the Medicinal Plant sector not only in India but across continents. In the past great missionaries like Colombus and Hu En Tsung used to travel across the seven seas to bring culture, goods and a new vision to their homeland. MEDHERB in today's times does this with a compilation that charts the Medicinal Plant trade and routes in major markets. Their efforts over the years have gained them immense respect and patronization from within the Medicinal Plant sector which they rightly deserve. It is an honour to be reviewing and sharing a few thoughts with all of you on the MEDHERB Green Pages 2011 issue which tracks a major portion of the South Asian territory India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Traditional Medicine and the use of Medicinal Plants on the sub-continent is a 4000 year old time tested and reliable option for healthcare in use by the population. Traditional sciences based on the use of Medicinal Plants, animal bi-products, minerals and metals has been the main stay of healthcare provisioning since the vedic times. The ancient seers have carefully selected Medicinal Plant resource for use in formulations to deliver that essential relief. Ancient scriptures indicate a use of over 35000 Medicinal Plants species combined in tradition of Ayurvedic dravyaguna to present over 32000 formulations. This entire science has been based on Panchabhautik principles which interpret a state of health in a human being on Tridoshik principles. It is said that almost any material in this universe is made up of Panchadhatus and their makeup once profiled on principles of dravyaguna which map their rasa, guna, veerya, vipaka, prabhav and karma, we get their therapeutic usefulness on a Tridoshik bed rock clearly defined. Modern science - organic and inorganic chemistry, pharmacology and various other disciplines of modern medical healthcare and R&D are yet to come to terms with this differential syntax of immense therapeutic value. Panchabhautik principles and a Tridoshik approach has in every sense cracked the human health code this is to say, the why's, the how's and the what's, of medical science and the human body metabolism in its complete growth cycle has a Ayurvedic definition that assures preventive and promotive healthcare. This stands out as a developed scientific approach in comparison with modern science which is still to find its feet on basic principles. The dravyaguna approach relies on a precise definition of an expected mode of action for a medicinal plant resource. This medicinal value delivers health benefit as per Ayurvedic principles. MEDHERB compiles knowledge associated with medicinal plant resources availability, trade and regulatory. In the entire gamut of traditional medicinal sciences like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Amchi and Sow Rigpa (many other non documented health care traditions of South Asia), gain from this directory in manner that is not valued enough and cannot be valued. The directory compiles not only the latest Circulars that bring to the fore vital information on the regulatory front but also comprehensively enlists various stakeholders in the Medicinal Plant sector for the focus countries. Any organization, researcher student or government policy maker cannot but refer to MEDHERB Green Pages to get an immediate assessment on trade routes, traffic and the depth of stakeholder participation for Medicinal Plants. Do join us in enjoying the fruits of this directory and lets salute the team at MEDHERB in bringing yet another edition of excellence. May they survey, study, interview, monitor, document, database, compute, compile and publish many more essential wisdom pages for the benefit of the medicinal plants as a whole.

RANJIT PURANIK Chief Executive Officer

It is a moment of enormous delight for me to place the 9th edition of Medherb Green Pages (MGP) before my peers - the community of herbal stakeholders. Starting with its 2003 edition, MGP has evolved and established itself as the single largest trade and commerce information source related to herbs & their allied products in India. With this issue Medherb Green PagesIndia, Bangladesh and Nepal 2011 has proved its mettle once again. Apart from the useful trade information on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants species (MAPs), that MGP is recognized for, this issue puts a special focus on another SAARC member Bangladesh. Since ancient times south Asian countries possess a competitive advantage in the field of traditional health care systems like Ayurveda, Unani and Chinese medicine systems. These have developed and refined treatments based purely on preparations made from best available natural resources. Bangladesh is also an important country from the perspective of MAPs trade with India. This had prompted us to work out in this issue of MGP. My personal visit to herbal trade centers of Bangladesh helped a lot to gather and compile information about the production and trade scenario of MAPs there. I also had some interesting unofficial meetings with various MAPs stakeholders in Dhaka. I hope the insights generated during the endeavor are adequately reflected in the volume in hand and will be considered helpful by our patrons. Based on earlier documents, about 5000 species of flowering plants occured in Bangladesh. Ayurveda, Unani and folk systems of medicine are the prevalent systems of medicine being practiced in Bangladesh. The number of medicinal plants included in the 'Materia Medica' of traditional medicine in the Indian subcontinent at present stands at about 2,000. More than 500 of such medicinal plants have so far been enlisted as growing in Bangladesh. Dhaka, Rajshahi, Shylet and Chittagong divisions are rich in medicinal plants. There is almost no report of large scale cultivation of medicinal plants in this country. Under a project 'Medicinal Plants and Herbs in Eastern Himalayas: Developing Sustainable Supply Chain and Enhancing Rural Livelihoods in Eastern Himalayas', by ICIMOD has identified Shatawari(Asparagus racemosus), Amla(Phyllanthus emblica), Sarpagandha(Rauvolfia serpentine), and Ashwagandha(Withania somnifera) are plants having good perspective for commercial development in Bangladesh. The country is border by the Bay of Bengal and Myanmar in south, while on the three directions it is bordered by India. Major herbal crude drug markets are Moulvi Bazar in Dhaka and Khatungong in Chittagong. There are 40-50 traders of medicinal plants and spices in Dhaka and about 10 traders deal exclusively in medicinal plants in Chitagong. Moulvi Bazar may be compared with Khari Baoli market in Delhi. The Khatungong market is basically known for imports and spices. 80% of the total imports of crude drugs in Bangladesh come from India only and the rest from China, Dubai, Indonesia, Iran, Myanmar and Pakistan. Petrapole is the Indian side of (Petrapole Beanpole) border checkpoint between India and Bangladesh. It is also referred to as Haridaspur border check post. Kolkata acts as the major export centre for Bangladesh in India and Delhi is the second. Major traded medicinal plants in Bangladesh have identified as: 1. Vasa(Adhatoda vasica), 2. Akola(Alangium salvifolium), 3. Shatawari(Asparagas racemosus) , 4. Semul(Bombax ceiba) , 5. Amaltas(Cassia fistula) , 6. Mulathi(Glycyrrhiza glabra) , 7. Anantmool(Hemidesmus indicus) , 8. American Mint(Hyptis

suaveolens) , 9. Konch(Mucuna pruriens) , 10. Sona(Oroxylum indicum) , 11. Amla(Phyllanthus embelica) , 12. Isabgol(Plantago psyllium) , 13. Ashoka(Saraca indica) , 14. Harda(Terminalia chebula) , 15. Behda(Terminalia belerica) and 16. Meetha Inderjau(Wrightia tinctoria). Ghrit-Kumari(Aloe-vera) and Neem(Azadirachta indica) are the major crops of medicinal plants in Bangladesh. Aloe vera juice is a major product of commerce in Dhaka, it is being sold abundantly in shops and juice corners generally attached to road side tea stalls. The spiced juice is enjoyed by many morning walkers. Since Aloe-vera is available in plenty, there is an opportunity for the Indian manufacturers to set up production units of the same and import the good quality juice in India. Some crude drugs are also exported to India especially of Kachur(Curcuma zedoaria), Narkachur(Curcuma caesia), Kapur Kachri(Kaempferia galanga) and Kamalgatta(Nymphaea lotus). The weekly off for markets are Friday and first half of Saturday in Dhaka and the government offices are closed on complete day on Friday and Saturday. Nepal being elongated from north to north east on the Indian boarder is a underdeveloped country but at the same time one of the richest countries in terms of natural resources like hydropower, forestry & herbal, culture, mountain, water resource in the world. The economy is largely supported by agriculture and buttressed by many niche products such as medicinal herbs and highquality tea. More than 100 species of MAPs are being harvested from different parts of the country. These are mostly traded to Indian markets and some are sold overseas also. In recent years, their importance has witnessed opportunities on many fronts food, medicine, dietary supplements, cosmetics and health tourism. Recently a couple of large business houses in Nepal have entered into the trade of herbal drugs. These export houses supply raw material directly to Indian dealers as well as to industries. A new trade Association in Nepal has also come up recently. It seems these two recent changes may transform the Nepalese medicinal plants' trade scenario extensively in coming years. This user friendly edition is divided into separate sections i.e. India, Crude medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Nepal and Bangladesh. Exports statistics of the herbal drugs, for the years have been provided in the form of tables and graphs for easy understanding. The stakeholders have been enlisted under Cultivators; Dealers, Exporters & Importers; Exporters, Extractors & Manufacturers and Organizations. Lastly, I assure the readers to provide sufficient information to optimize low risk and flexible professional decision making; as we understand improving capability to maximize business potential requires a balanced approach among people, process and information. As you aware we have already given updates on MAPs trade on The Netherlands and Germany in the year 2007 and 2008 respectively. I am pleased to inform, the next edition of MGP will cover one more European country i.e. France, with updates from India. Indian origin herbal products, crude herbs, fragrances and essential oils have got great demand and ready acceptance among the trade and business community there. Eventually, growing Indian exports to France amounting billions, has facilitated wide-spread acclamation and acceptance throughout the European Union. Hope, we continue to relish your faith, encouragement and patronage in the years to come and many thanks.

A study of adulterants of Indian medicinal plants in commerceDr. H.B. Singh, Head Raw Materials Herbarium & Museum (RHMD) National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources

Abstract Under the crude drug identification services of NISCAIR, 2671 crude drug samples have been received for identification from various herbal pharmaceutical companies, traders of medicinal plants, crude drug dealers, research students and teachers from various Universities, Colleges of Pharmacy, and scientists from various Research Institutions, during April 2005 to March 2010. Out of these, 305 samples were found to be botanically erroneous. The usage of such adulterated or spurious raw materials for manufacturing medicine in place of genuine one is responsible for lowering quality and efficacy of the drug because the adulterated material may not have the active compounds. Moreover, it may contain toxic compounds that may cause deleterious effect on human health. Consequently, reliability of the finished products at national and international level is affected and betraying the faith of people on Indian Systems of Medicine. Therefore, the present study suggests that correct botanical identity and authenticity of

the crude drug materials must be ensured before using the same for preparing medicine. Introduction Crude drugs are the starting raw material for manufacturing herbal medicines. Efficacy of any medicine depends on the genuineness and quality of the raw materials used for its preparation. Because of wide spread belief that herbal medicines are safer than synthetic drugs, demand of medicinal plants in traditional and modern medicines, nutraceuticals, food supplements, herbal cosmetics, and toiletry products has increased many fold. It is estimated that the current domestic turnover of herbal products in India is in between Rs. 7000 to 8000 crores per annum. In addition to this, foreign trade related to finished herbal products as well as raw materials is Rs. 3,600 crores per annum. Further, the domestic as well as export turnover of herbal products in India is estimated to increase up to Rs. 14,500/Crude plants in trade

Dr. Gian Singh, Consultant Rawal Medherbs Consultants Pvt. Ltd.

Introduction The World Health Organisation estimates that up to 80% of the world's population relies on medicinal plants and animals for their health. The demand for medicinal plants is rising in the industrialized world, where people are resorting to natural health remedies more and more. Present estimate is that China exports plant based medicine products worth Rs. 22,000/-crores and Indian export turnover is only Rs. 462 crores. The global market for medicinal herbs and herbal products is estimated to touch US $ 5 trillion by 2050 indicating immense potential and demand in this sector. Out of 10,000 medicinal plants found in India 1800 are used in Ayurveda, 4700 in Traditional Medicinal Practice, 1100 in Siddha Medicinal System, 750 in Unani, 300 in Homeopathy, 300 in Chinese System of Medicine and finally 100 in modern Allopathic System. However ,looking into the fact that about 3.6 lakh plant species are spread over the earth (about 40 per cent are available in India) ,the number of plants used in medicine is very small. Charaka (1000-800BC) and Susruta(800-700BC),two ancient sages from India have described Himalayas as the best habitat of MPs. Even today Himalayas are the source of many high value

herbal drugs and about 8000 plant species are still found in the Himalayas. The tribes living in remote area still depend heavily on these plants as the source of drug and their livelihood. These people still have knowledge about plants which is not recorded anywhere .A survey has recorded about 1750 species of MPs in the Himalayan region; 62 of these species being restricted to the region. Out of these plants 1020 are herbs, 338 shrubs, 339 trees and 51 are pteredophytes. An estimate of healing plants of Peninsular India has shown that 545 species of trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers, grasses and ferns used in the Indian systems of medicine are found in this area . Most of these species are native or naturalized exotics and occur wild in this region only. Medicinal plants are distributed across diverse habitats. In India, about 70% of the medicinal plant species are found in the tropical forests spread across the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, the Vindhyas, Chotanagpur plateau, Aravalies, the Terai region in the foot-hills of Himalayas and the North-East. In the recent years, the growing demand for herbal products has led to a quantum jump in volumes of plant material traded in domestic as well as in globalFrom Wild to Cultivation

Some of the manufacturers are approaching the Department of AYUSH for getting the clarifications on the issue of loan license for ASU drugs which exists in the rules of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1945. After thorough review of the situation of compliance of GMP and shortcomings in its implementation in various States, Department of AYUSH is of the firm view that in case of loan license for a particular ASU drug, both the licensee and loanee should possess the Good Manufacturing Practices Certificate after Schedule 'T1 compliance of Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1945 and related rules. This has the approval of Secretary (AYUSH) diary No.F.912 dated 28.4.2010. Yours faithfully, (Dr. S.K. Sharma) Adviser (Ayurveda)Medherb Information

History Ashwagandha has a long medicinal history stemming back 4000 years; has been used in Asian cultures as a therapy for stress and stress-related disorders. Ashwagandha in Sanskrit means "horse's smell", probably originating from the odor of its root which somewhat resembles that of a sweaty horse. The species name somnifera means "sleep-bearing" in Latin, indicating it was considered a sedative. Ashwagandha (or Indian Ginseng as it is sometimes called) is one of the most widely studied Indian herbs used in Ayurveda or Indian traditional medicine. History Rose has a long and lively history. Fossil evidence tells that rose is 35 million years old. Today, there are over 30,000 varieties of roses and it has the most complicated family tree of any known flower species. Cultivation of rose most likely began in Asia around 5000 years ago. Cultivation of rose was introduced in Europe during late eighteenth century by China. From this introduction, experts today tend to divide all roses into two groups. There are old roses (those cultivated in Europe before 1800) and modern roses (those which began to be cultivated in England and France around the turn of the 19th century). Rose has experienced the most horrible extremes of the Roman Empire when the farmers were reduced to growing roses instead of food crops in order to satisfy the demands of their rulers. More than 10,000 roses are known in cultivation and three types of odours are recognized, viz. those of the Cabbage Rose (R. centifolia), the Damask Rose (R. damascena) and the Tea Rose (R. indica) Names in different languages Arabic Gulab Bengali Golap

History Until 1765, Bengal was part of the domains of the Nawab of Awadh. In 1765 the latter two ceded Bengal, Bihar and Orissa to the E.I.C. which formed these territories into the Bengal Presidency. In 1905 the Province of East Bengal and Assam was carved out of Bengal Presidency. In 1912 the combined territory of Bengal Presidency and East Bengal and Assam was reorganized in three provinces, Assam, Bengal, and the third being Bihar and Orissa. When British India was released into independence in 1947, the Province of Bengal was divided into two parts, East Bengal (with Sylhet District, hitherto part of Assam) which joined Pakistan as East Pakistan, and West Bengal, which joined the Republic of India. Pakistan had a peculiar structure, consisting of two parts separated by over 1000 km. The political centre lay in West Pakistan. Democratic rule episodically being interrupted by military dictatorship made political opposition only more difficult. In 1971 the suppression of oppositional protest in East Pakistan by

state authorities resulted in the Third Indo-Pakistani War, and in the independence of Bangladesh. Geography Bangladesh straddles the Bay of Bengal in south Asia. To the west and north it is bounded by India; to the southeast, it borders Myanmar. The topography is predominantly a low-lying floodplain. Around half of the area is actively deltaic and prone to flood during monsoons, from May to September. The Ganges (Called as Padma River) flows into the country from the northwest, while the Brahmaputra (called as Jamuna) enters from the north. The capital city, Dhaka, is near the point where those river systems meet (called as Meghna). The land is more suitable for rice cultivation. In the north and the southeast the land is more hilly and dry. The Chittagong Hill Tracts have extensive hardwood forests. The vast river delta area is home to the dominant plains culture. Economy The only significant natural resource is natural gas. Approximately 75 percent of the workforce is involved inBangladesh: An Overview
