In his closing speech, he assured the attendees that both the women’s and men’s San Gabriel Association’s would soon be meeting to start the merger of the two memberships according to the new United States Bowling Congress. NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSSouthern California Deaf Travel Begins 46th

Season at Keystone With 6 Trios Teamsby Connie Marchione

NORWALK…As the oldest all deaf traveling league in nation,So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League begins its 46th season at Key-stone Lanes with 6 teams of Trios this Sunday at 1:00 PM. This isa departure from last season’s 10 doubles teams.

In last month’s meeting the bowlers after one year’s trail, votedagainst having the doubles teams again because it was too fast paced. So with a poor showing of bowlers present at the meeting it waseither 4 teams of four-somes or find two more bowlers to change to6 teams of three-somes.

One of the two bowlers was on vacation in Michigan and wantsto come back for the new season. The other did not attend the meet-ing because he did not intend to bowl in Doubles format again. When told that if he come back, there will be trios format which isokay with him.

The 6 teams will be led by Darrell Stogryn, Ed Abakumoff, DanFlores, Robert G. “Bob” Jones, Pablo Yoma and Andy Lorenzo, allhigh average bowlers in order. Stogryn, a former member of PBAhad won the league’s Charles R. Hart Memorial trophy as the highaverage bowler for five of the last 6 years. In 2000-01 season hewas second to Mark Fisser who did not return to this league. Un-less the other 5 bowlers show a vast improvement, it will be hardfor the 5 bowlers to wrest the Hart Trophy from Stogryn becauseStogryn impoves with age.

Also Stogryn carried his El Camino Village team to the leaguetitle in six of the last 10 seasons. Last season El Camino Villagewas leading down to the final position round showdown againstAbakumoff’s 2nd place Riverside. It took a superb effort byAbakumoff to beat Stogryn and gave his Riverside team the title, preventing El Camino Village’s 7th title.

So ladies and gentlemen, let the ball-rolling begin.DEAFLYMPICS BOWLING SHOULD HAVE MEDALS FOR ALL-EVENTS

Someone should tell the powers that be in CISS that Deaflymoicsshould have medals given to top three men and women bowlers inAll-events. This writer follows all big world bowling events andthe results showed that medals were given to top three bowlers inAll-events.

The most recent World Tenpin Bowling Championship in Den-mark USBC’s Team USA bowler Lynda Barnes won bronze inwomen’s Masters, silver medal in All=events, silver in team, andbronze in doubles. Also in the recent Tournament of Americas, medals wee given in All-events.

When this writer found out that Deaf Team USA Lindy Deckerdid not get a gold medal for leading the All-events in theDeaflympics at Australia last January, he was dismayed. Her hardefforts in Singles, doubles, trios and 5 player team piling up scoresto finish at top was wasted. Just like in 2001 Deaflympics in Italy, this writer thought Deaf Team USA Gary Vymazal did not get amedal for making an unbeatable recird All=events score.

That means the person in charge of bowling in CISS does notknow much about the sport.

CANOGA PARK - The sum-mer ended for the West Coast Jr.Elims at Canoga Park Bowl acouple of Sundays ago. Twocenters, Canoga Park Bowl andKeystone Lanes, sent their rep-resentatives to the floor in a verydemanding two days of compe-tition.

The format was originallymatch play only, with the guysgoing 20 games and the gals 16games, each in four equal blocksover the two days. However, bending to the desires of thebowlers, an additional top fivefinals was added at the lastminute of day one.

From the first frame of thecompetition, Matt Jones made inknown that this was his house, and all of the others bowlers hadto take it away from him. Jonesled the first block of five gameswith a low game of 223. He alsoclaim the 150 bonus pinsawarded in match play to givehim a plus 308. Jeff Spiesmanstayed close (+305) with thehigh game of the block, a 276and 150 bonus pins for himself. For the ladies, Felicia Marajumped out to a quick start atplus 169 behind all wins and anadditional 120 bonus pins.

The second block saw Jonescontinued his march through thefield as he included a 266 highgame of the block and anotherfive wins, extending his lead toplus 642 over Spiesman (+374).Samantha Jimenez took over thelead for the ladies with all winsand a 120 pin swing to plus 261.

On day two, William Jack-son started to make his movetaking the third block behind

four match play wins to closewithin 260 pins of leader Jones(+891). Jimenez started to pullaway from the field at plus 403.

And in the last block thebowlers were tired and Jonestook advantage of that. Jonescoasted to an plus 1160 lead, knowing that everything waszero once again for the finals. The battle to get into the top fivewere the action was. And forthe ladies, the same factors asJimenez completed match playon top at plus 481.

Below is all of the reportablescores by the bowlers per block. Many of you parents and spon-sors want to keep track of thosepostings.

In the finals, first up is theladies. Natalie Jimenez gets bySadia Ward 184-181, and is de-feated by Stephanie Goldsmith235-231. Then for another tightmatch, Goldsmith puts awayMara 227-207 to meet S.Jimenez. The final match gaveSamantha Jimenez the title 212-167.

A few pairs away, the boysstarted it up with Matt Harrisfalling to Chris Fritsch 246-192.Chris was then put away by JeffSpiesman with the tournamenthigh game 289-225. Behind thathigh Spiesman quickly put awayWilliam Jackson 210-198 tomeet the top seed. Now afterwaiting his turn for awhile,Jones made sure everyone knewthis was his. Title win 233-180.

Congratulations to SamanthaJimenez and Matt Jones. Schol-arship awards and luncheon bida farewell to this years Elims.Look for Matt and Samantha ondisplay at Canoga Park and Key-stone Lanes as part of the per-petual awards those two centersshare. Until next year, I’ll seelater.
