Vatican extends plenary indulgence for the dead throughout November 2020
In the month of November, the Church has two traditional means of obtaining a plenary indulgence for the souls in Purgatory. The first is to visit a cemetery and pray for the dead during the Octave of All Saints’ Day, which is Nov. 1-8.
This year, the Vatican decreed that this plenary indulgence can be obtained on any day in November. The second plenary indulgence is connected to the Feast of All Souls’ Day on Nov. 2, and
can be received by those who piously visit a church or oratory on that day and recite the Our Father and the Creed.
The Vatican said that this plenary indulgence has also been extended and is available to Catholics throughout the month of November to reduce crowds.
A partial indulgence, can be applied only to souls in Purgatory and granted to the faithful who: devoutly visit a cemetery and at least mentally praying for the dead devoutly recite lauds or vespers from the Office of the Dead or the prayer, “Eternal rest
grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen”
In addition to visiting these places and offering the prescribed prayers, the general requirements of indulgences must be met, which are: Pray for the intentions of our Holy Father (one Our Father & one Hail Mary is suggested
as a minimum, but any other Prayers may be added) Worthily receive Holy Communion (ideally on the same day, or within several days if that is
not possible) Go to Confession within about 20 days of the indulgenced work Be in a state of grace at the time the indulgenced work is completed For a plenary indulgence it is also necessary to have a complete detachment from sin, even venial sin.
