ABSTRACTS:

Plenary Sessions:

Five Frontiers of Innovation in Language Education – Aaron Royer (U.S. Embassy) To open and set the tone for the conference, the presenter will give an overview of 5 frontiers of innovation in language education: digital platforms (Kaizena, Facebook, Google Classroom, etc.), corpora, online professional development (MOOCs, PLNs, etc.), the flipped classroom, and open educational resources (OERs). After presenting a general introduction to each of these areas, he will discuss their implications for language education and some specific implementations. Attendees will be given a resource guide which contains a list of example technologies and activities in each of the five areas. The future of ELT – Jair Félix (National Geographic Learning)

English may have transformed the world, but with non-native speakers now outnumbering native speakers 3 to 1, the language – and the way it is taught and learnt – is being reshaped in return. The globalization and adaptation of English, and the impact that technology has had on it, will revolutionize the language in ways we can only begin to imagine. Is that good or bad? Depends on who’s talking… In this presentation we will explore some of the ways in which globalization and rapidly-developing technology are influencing the use of English, ELT course content and teaching methods, and the different roads our profession might follow based on current trends and possible future needs both globally and in our own Latin-American context. Getting ready to innovate in education through technology – Ronaldo Lima Jr (Macmillan) Teaching XXI century students could be an intimidating task for some, especially when it comes to students' relation with and use of technology. I believe that teachers could use technologies as allies to innovate in education, but also think that to do so, teachers need to first innovate and renovate their own attitudes towards technology. Therefore, in this talk I present strategies that are well-known to language teachers concerning second language acquisition, and show how they could be applied by teachers themselves in getting more confident and savvy about new technologies and their uses in the language classroom. Differentiated Instruction - Bjarne Z. A. Vonsild (Richmond) We all know that students are different in terms of maturity, education, interests, learning styles, special learning difficulties and we even have mixed levels within the same class. This can put a tremendous pressure on the teachers who endeavors to cater for all of their students´ likes and needs. In this plenary, I would like to discuss how we can use teaching material, on-line material and other practical ways to cater for a variety of wants, needs and mixed levels within the same group of students with the philosophy of integrating and challenging all concerned.

Workshops:

12/07 - 2:00 to 3:30pm Principled Innovation: Back to the Basics – Aaron Royer (U.S. Embassy) In our quest for innovative language-teaching techniques and activities, it is easy to lose sight of some of the fundamental tenets on which modern language instruction is based. These include, to give just a few examples, the primacy of comprehensible input, the student-centered classroom, authentic tasks, and a precise definition of communication to inform our communicative-language teaching. In this workshop, the presenter will review these and other core tenets with an eye toward reinforcing the foundation on which other innovative ideas from this conference can be built and implemented. In addition to reviewing these core concepts, the presenter will give some concrete examples of new language-teaching technologies and techniques which are grounded in them. Spaghetti, Marshmallows, and English Language Teaching – Jair Félix (National Geographic Learning) Which student tend to do the worst? Why? Which tend to do the best? Why? What improves performance? What kills it? … These are some of the questions that teachers regularly ask themselves when reflecting on the teaching and learning process that takes place in the classroom. This workshop intends to provide answers to those questions through a remarkably fun and instructive exercise that encourages teachers to experience simple but profound lessons in collaboration, innovation and creativity – all of which lie at the heart of effective language teaching and learning. The motivational impact of teachers on language learners. - What do studies in the language teaching field have to say to us? – Julio Menochelli (Helbling Languages) Can we really positively or negatively influence our learners’ motivation to learn English? Join the presenter in this talk where he shows some research data on the teachers’ important role on language learning. Game, Game-Based Learning or Gamification? Carmen Castellani (Pearson) Our 21st century students are more visual compared to the ones in the last century, they want to try and see when they learn, they are competitive, and they expect student-centered classes. They are digital natives and multi-task. So how can we engage these students? Among the many activities we try and give them during a class, gamification is becoming more and more present nowadays. The aim of this presentation is to show what gamification is and how it can be used to enhance the learning of our students and the pleasure in our classes. Bilingual Education and The Case for Students’ Mother Tongue - Julia Landau, Milena Lickfeld, Tatiana Simas (Escola Girassol) Does bilingual education mean we have to ignore students' mother tongue? What do their "errors" and code switching reveal about their acquisition process? While past traditions in bilingual education and language learning kept students' languages strictly separated, we now know that the two can work together (Cummins, 2007 for example). This workshop explores the ways teachers can capitalize on Portuguese knowledge to better help and understand students. We will also highlight the advanced ways that young learners make use of all their

July 12th and 13th, 2017 language resources to create hypotheses and take risks in English, tracing this process from 1st grade through 5th. Using Google Apps to Optimize Your Teaching - Ana Luiza Leite & Paula Merkle (ACBEU) This workshop aims to provide participants with an overview of some Google apps such as the Drive, Docs, and Forms. Participants will explore their basic functions and also get some ideas on how to use these tools to optimize their teaching. *Participants must have a Gmail account in order to access these Google apps. 12/07 - 4:30 to 6:00pm Storytelling in the Young-Adult Classroom – Jair Félix (National Geographic Learning) Storytelling opens a world of infinite possibilities which can engage and entice students’ interest. The stories told in TED Talks reflect global issues that permeate every aspect of our lives: personal experiences, ecology, science, etc. Their content is relevant to the lives of our learners. They offer an opportunity for exploring a topic and its language. The value of listening to a story goes beyond the entertainment it might offer: exposure to stories can contribute to a person’s intellectual, emotional and moral development; it also has thought-provoking qualities which whet a student’s appetite for understanding. This workshop will share ideas and garner participants’ experiences of working with stories. It will explore how storytelling can enhance working with language skills in authentic manner. Innovating in Pronunciation Teaching – Julio Menochelli (Helbling Languages) This workshop begins with a reflection on the realistic goals of teaching pronunciation to foreign language learners. Issues such as the (impossible) division of the English-speaking world into British English and American English, the proposals within English as a Lingua Franca, the realistic goals students should have regarding their own pronunciation, and the relation between production and perception will be addressed. Then I will summarize the features of English pronunciation that are especially challenging for Brazilian learners. Finally, I will present some online tools that could be used by language teachers and learners to work on pronunciation inside and outside the language classroom. Listening: Are you teaching or just testing? – Maria Helena Meyer (ACBEU) Listening is often claimed as one of the most difficult skills to master in a FL. However, the way it is commonly approached in the classroom does not contribute to enable students to listen more effectively. The routine listen-answer exercise-listen again-check tests but does not teach listening. In this workshop, participants will have a chance to reflect on the nature of listening, experience and analyze a listening task and discuss a staged framework that will provide learners with several opportunities to learn how to listen better. Developing Speaking Competences - Anderson Leite Xavier Junior (CUP) “The goal of many second language teachers is to help their students become competent speakers of the language. But what does it mean to be a competent second language speaker?” In this workshop, we will discuss the notion of second language speaking competences and share some activities we can use in classroom to help our students to develop them. In the survival mode: How to innovate EFL classes and motivate children in Brazilian Public Schools - Amanda Ribeiro (Prefeitura de Salvador)

July 12th and 13th, 2017 The public education system in Brazilian cities is chaotic and teachers have few resources at their disposal. That's why it's essential for language educators to be creative in motivating children in order to guarantee language learning. The objective of this workshop is to share some ideas and strategies to innovate techniques and empower children from public schools to provide them an effective learning atmosphere. Learning disabilities? Strategies for maximizing students´ executive function in a language class – Silvia Teles (Socialize / SBS) Connections between neuroscience and education have examined the role of executive function skills in learning processes and disorders. In this workshop participants will get to know more about it and analyze class activities/routines to foster students´ learning, sense of positive flow and belonging in the class. 13/07 – 2:00 to 3:30pm Inspiring Innovation: Setting Up and Maintaining a Professional Learning Network (PLN) – Aaron Royer (U.S. Embassy) Innovation generally does not happen in a vacuum, but rather in places where conversations take place, problems are discussed, and ideas are exchanged. The web provides an abundance of such places, and this workshop will expose attendees to some of the most popular among them, in the process defining the concept - and emphasizing the importance and relevance - of professional learning networks (PLNs). After defining and giving examples of PLNs, the presenter will try to make the case, through examples and personal experience, that they can be important drivers of innovation in the classroom. Innovating your EFL classes with Role Playing Games - Valdir de Souza Pinto (Escola Girassol Bilíngue, Grupo Educacional Anchieta and Colégio Integral) A role-playing game is a problem-solving set of activities that culminates with the accomplishment of objectives. RPGs are task-based activities in which students use the target language to reach proposed goals by using all the language resources available to them. Although the main focus is on speaking, it is an integrated-skills activity because students end up using all four language skills The teacher controls the development of the story and rolls the dice, determining whether solutions presented by students will be effective in overcoming obstacles. The focus of this presentation is to share the mechanics of this activity and how it helps students learn. Why gamify? - Simone Barreto Novaes & Maria Elisabeth Chaves Santos (ACBEU) How many of your students have never played computer or video games? No longer games are considered nerdy things. They are part of kids, teenagers and even adults’ daily lives. On that account, it isn't a matter of whether teachers should make technology games part their classroom, but how they are going to do it. Games have numerous elements that make them powerful vehicles for learning, they boost students’ engagement and provide successful end-results. The focus of this workshop is to discuss how classroom gamification allied with

July 12th and 13th, 2017 technology supports 21st century learning skills, makes teaching more dynamic and student- centric as well as help teachers implement the use of games in class. Boosting gentleness and self-esteem in the language classroom - Conceição Rodrigues (Escola Municipal Joir Brasileiro) & Eliane Oliveira, Denerson Mota Reis (UNEB) The workshop aims at presenting a group of activities that have been developed in the PIBID program at a public school in Salvador to enhance a better collaborative learning environment through the usage of communicative and positive language activities in order to boosting gentleness and self-esteem in any type of language classroom. English Pronunciation and ELT Class: A Multidimensional Teaching Approach - Robson Ribeiro da Silva (Academia de Línguas) L2 education is strongly driven by American and British speech patterns and oftentimes there is not so much room left to appreciate other varieties. Language educators, by their turn, have diverse opinions on what the role of English pronunciation teaching should be and about the best way to teach it. This workshop is aimed at discussing the diversity of the English language through phonology by drawing on a pronunciation teaching approach that integrates articulatory phonetics and a multidimensional focus on speech performance. In this course, ideas of hand-outs, videos and extra material for the ELT class will also be presented.

Initiative for fostering written production: The Writing Lab - Maria Zucoli, Mariana Zucoli, Pedro Santana, Rafaele Silva (ICEBU/Londrina – PR) Students often dread written production, and classroom time is usually not enough to foster this prime skill holistically. Hence, we designed a project entitled “Writing Lab” which aims at developing learner’s authorship through collaborative tasks and authentic production of language. Our goal is to create a safe environment where students feel comfortable to
