PROGRAM COMMITTEE CHAIR - DANIEL A. LONG, M.D.

NEEDS ASSESSMENTThe management of the patient with cataract becomes more complex each year. Technological advances improve the ability to removecataracts and improve the visual experience after surgery, but these advances also elevate patients' expectations of what surgery can do fortheir vision. Successful management requires proper selection of preoperative regimen, skillful removal of the cataract with the latest equip-ment and techniques, insertion of the best of several lens implant technologies applicable for that patient, and knowledgable postoperativemanagement. Frequent, in-depth discussion of the latest developments with experts who help the field evolve is a necessity.

The frequency of managing a patient with uveitis appears to be increasing and the science behind testing, diagnosis, and treatment is breaking new ground. Many features of present uveitis management were not known just a few years ago. The comprehensive ophthalmologist and subspecialist both need regular updates to maintain proficiency in managing this set of diseases.

PURPOSEThe focus of this meeting will be to update the general ophthalmologist as well as the cataract and uveitis specialist on the latestin preoperative management, surgical techniques, clinical outcomes, and postoperative complications management in the fields ofcataract and uveitis, as well as research on future developments in these disciplines.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Apply appropriate preoperative testing and preparation for cataract surgery.

• Apply the latest information on IOL power calculation formulas and preoperative testing: the best strategies for the

unusual eye, the post-refractive surgery eye, and the new technology implants.

• Compare the pros and cons of varied intracameral irrigating of medications - antibiotics, anesthetic agents, dilating agents.

• Manage the variations and challenges in wound construction.

• Discuss capsulorrhexis issues: optimum size, centration, tools, techniques.

• Identify the capabilities, and advantages and disadvantages of recent phacoemulsification technology including use in bimanual

phacoemulsification.

• Discuss the new lens technologies and designs and the advantages and disadvantages of those factors, including edge design,

capsule opacification rates, and visual acuity.

• Describe postoperative endophthamitis and its prophylaxis and treatment.

• Detect postoperative cystoid macular edema and formulate strategies to prevent and treat the condition.

• Uveitis syndromes: Identify what must be ruled out or recognized.

• Discuss new diagnostic testing in uveitis and how and when to use it.

• Define immunomodulators and their use in clinical practice.

• Classify and correctly diagnose the different types of chronic uveitis and learn the treatment modalities of each.

• Interpret the latest information concerning infectious uveitis.

• Integrate the latest applications of cataract surgery in the face of uveitis.

This course will present the latestinformation on improving lens calculations in a post-LASIK and refractive surgery environment. Emphasis will be placed on gaininga better understanding of the factors of refractive surgery that influence the calculations for IOL placement, determining the correctalgorithm to calculate lens power, and making correct lens choicesfor the post-refractive patient.
