There were about 150 participants for the two days and the following is a summary of the highlights of the meeting. Auslaender et al. described the occurrence of he- patic veno-occlusive disease and immune deficiency in a Lebanese baby brought to Israel for treatment. Krugliac et al. demonstrated the regional variations of intragastric pH before and after cimetidine. Golan and Keren, in a prospective trial, found that cimetidine maintenance therapy prevented peptic complaints in patients receiving chronic antirheumatic drug treat- ment, while Reisfeld et al. found in a prospective trial that cimetidine, 400 mg twice daily, was as effective for duodenal ulcer therapy as the usual dosage given four times daily. Kofler et al. described a group of six patients with treated achalasia in whom manometric and radionuclide studies demonstrated that their per- sistent dysphagia was mainly due to a motor disturb- ance in the esophageal body; thus, redilating or oper- ating the lower esophageal sphincter would not relieve all their symptoms. Two panel discussions were held: one, chaired by Dr. Rozen, was on electrocoagulation of bleeding lesions; the other, chaired by Dr. Novis, was on the various treatments available for retained bile duct stones.
