SCHEDULINGMASS INTENTIONSOne of the greatest acts of charity is to pray for the living and the dead (a spiritual work of mercy). The greatest and most powerful prayer we have is the Mass, since the fruits of the Mass are the very fruits of Jesus’ redemption. You can schedule a Mass intention for deceased friends and loved ones by calling the parish office at (614) 267-9241, or by turning in a written request. Mass stipends (offerings) are $10 each. Mass intentions can also be requested for special intentions.

AUGUST CONTRIBUTORS TO THE SANCTUARY LAMPSThe Sanctuary lamp burns constantly to proclaim the real presence of Jesus in the Tabernacle. For the month of August, two Sanctuary candles in the Church were donated by the Nguyen family. The third candle was donated by Nancy Stinnett. Our thanks go to these families for their generosity.

DONATIONS TO THE SANCTUARY LAMPSParishioners interested in making a contribution to a candle(s) for the Sanctuary Lamps in the Church, please contact Sue Beman at (614) 214-5333 or [email protected] to make arrangements. Contributors’ names will be included in the Sunday bulletin. The suggested offering is $25.00. The I.C. Women’s Club thanks you for supporting this ministry.

MISSION APPEAL FROM THE CARMELITE FRIARSDue to the pandemic, the annual visit by a missionary priest was not possible this year. This letter explains the work of the Carmelite Friars who ask for our prayers and our financial gifts. Please send your donation to the parish office or place it in the candle/offertory box. From the Carmelite Mission Outreach, Province of St. Elias“Although few in number, the mission outreach of the Carmelite Friars, Saint Elias Province, is quite extensive. For over sixty-five years, we have been providing manpower and financial assistance to Africa, specifically to Zimbabwe (formerly, Southern Rhodesia). Within the past thirty-five years, we have been helping the Carmelite Missions in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Papua, New Guinea. It is not always possible for us to send Friars on a full-time basis, and so we try to help financially through funds raised mostly in the Mission Cooperative Appeal and with whatever part-time help or administrative assistance we can provide.Responding to the needs of the church and the call of the Holy Spirit through the local Bishops, the Carmelite Friars, St. Elias Province, have recently begun our own missions in Trinidad-Tobago and Vietnam. Since we have already attracted many vocations in each place, we are also trying to establish formation programs in these countries. This has placed a considerable burden on our finances and on our ability to continue helping our other missionary endeavors. We intend to focus the disbursement of funds from the 2020 Cooperative Mission Appeal especially in three areas. First, the Philippines: We hope to significantly help victims of the recent floods and earthquakes since many of our missionary efforts have been affected. Second, in Zimbabwe: Our men plan to purchase seed and fertilizer for families so that they might gain some independence from reliance on the collapsed economy. Thirdly, we will continue to help develop formation programs in Trinidad-Tobago and Vietnam to encourage indigenous clergy. One hundred percent of funds raised through the Cooperative Mission Appeal go directly to our missionaries who then distribute and monitor the use of these funds. The Carmelites respond to the call to love one another through prayer and action by establishing ministries where there is the greatest need. They create humanitarian programs to relieve the suffering of the poor, minister to those in hospitals and prisons, provide education, provide housing for orphans and rejected seniors, and conduct spiritual and religious formation in almost 40 countries on five continents. Your generosity to support the Carmelite Friars’ missionary work will be greatly appreciated.”

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 30, 2020

The Morrison Family have been IC parishioners since moving to Clintonville in 2005. All 4 of their children attended IC and had an overwhelming sense of a faith-filled community. The kids have made life-long friendships which has been evident in our college kids who are in other states but come back to their roots of friends made at IC. Immaculate Conception has been a second home, and the Morrison Family wish to see its future sustained.

We are longtime parishioners. Patty is an IC school graduate, as are our two children. It is our duty – not an option -- to fund parish services and facilities. We contribute to the offertory, capital campaigns and Bishop’s Annual Appeal and sponsor a small scholarship for eighth-graders graduating from IC.

Barb Good Fortkamp and her sister, Beth Good Pritchard attended Immaculate Conception School in the 1980’s and graduated from Bishop Watterson High School. The sisters were not Catholic, at the time, as they grew up in the Presbyterian Church. After experiencing the value of a Catholic faith and education, Barb and Beth joined the Catholic Church as adults. They were excited to raise their children in the faith and send them to Immaculate Conception and Watterson. Barb’s children are Will (2017) and Ella (2020) Fortkamp, and Beth’s children are Scotty (2013) and Sydney (2018) Pritchard. The Good family does not have a long legacy at Immaculate Conception but they pray to one day watch their grandchildren receive the gifts of the Catholic religion and education as well.

Fr. Matt Hoover has presided as pastor of the Immaculate Conception Parish for the last 7 years.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

REFLECTION FROM TODAY’S GOSPEL: Matthew 16:21-27

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?”

Are there times that you find yourself resisting the call to sacrificial love EXEMPLIFIED BY JESUS?

Love is not always easy and often times may demand great sacrifice and courage on your part.

Are you ready and willing to embrace the crosses of love in your life? Furthermore, are you willing to walk with others, encouraging them along the way,

when they, too, are called to embrace the crosses of life?

Seek God’s strength and wisdom this day and strive to live by the divine perspective in all things, especially suffering. My Catholic Life! Inc. Copyright © 2020. (used with permission)

Saint of the Week

St. Teresa of Calcutta September 5

St. Teresa of Calcutta is well known and well-loved for her passion for the poorest of the poor. Mother Teresa would say “Out of love for us, Jesus chose suffering and humiliation as

the means of our salvation, and thus I choose the same, as a means of loving and being united to Him, and in the belief that, united to Jesus, my suffering and humiliation can be for the good of others. There is joy even in suffering because one is suffering with and for Jesus and for others. This is the “joy of loving,”

A Prayer for Returning to School God, please bless the leaders of our schools with your wisdom to assist their staff and teachers, during these challenging times. May you give them the necessary grace for their specific roles of leadership, especially during the “re-opening” of our schools. Lord Jesus, equip all educators as they adjust to a “new normal”, may you keep them safe physically and mentally. May you guide all the students as they adjust to their new routines. Lord we ask that you sustain, strengthen and protect all the staff and students throughout the 2020-21 school year. Amen.
