ASSOCIATIONAL ANNUAL REPORT Fall 2017

Thank you for your partnership in the gospel! The mission of Arizona Southern Bap sts is “working

together to make disciples of all peoples in Arizona and around the world.” The Centennial Vision calls for us

to have 1000 churches averaging 12 bap sms per year with 2/3 of their average a endance involved in

discipleship and giving an average of 10% to the Coopera ve Program by 2028. That means plan ng new

churches and revitalizing churches that are plateaued and declining. That means increasing our evangelis c

effec veness. That means inten onally engaging people in discipleship. That means giving generously so we

can give even more to reach the world for Christ. The only way that is going to happen is if we work togeth‐

er—churches, associa ons, and partners. We believe we can accomplish more by working together than we

can by ourselves. Why else would our conven on exist?

2016 was both good and bad for Arizona Southern Bap sts. We had a decrease in total bap sms but

s ll our churches s ll recorded 2,629 bap sms. The AZSBC added 24 new churches in 2016 but 22 churches

closed their doors. Coopera ve Program giving increased only slightly over the previous year but more

churches gave. The Lo e Moon Christmas offering for Interna onal Missions was the best ever with over

$810,000 given by our churches. We also exceeded the Arizona Mission Offering goal for the first me with

over $151,000 given.

Arizona is home to the fastest growing county and the 5th largest city in the na on. 80% of Arizona’s

popula on is consider unchurched and many are never churched. We live in a me where 59% of the world’s

people groups are considered unreached. We must do something to change both of those reali es! That is

what the Centennial Vision is all about. We believe working together through the Coopera ve Program can

make a difference in our world and in our state. Thank you for working together to reach our state and our

world for Christ! I hope you will join us at First Southern Bap st Church in Tucson for our annual mee ng on

November 17 as we celebrate what God is doing among Arizona Southern Bap sts.

Sincerely,

David W. Johnson

Gateway Seminary - Arizona Associational Report 2017

Gateway Arizona celebrated our 21st year in 2017! This is the result of God working through our strong partnership with Arizona Southern Baptists and your support of the Cooperative Program. What a privilege it has been, and will continue to be, to provide theological education and leadership development to our Arizona churches.

Gateway Arizona has graduated 157 students. More than half the churches in Arizona have a Gateway Arizona graduate, former student or current student serving in a leadership position.

We currently have about 100 students taking classes this fall, 20 of which are new. More than

70% of our student body has enrolled in the last 2 years. Graduation ceremonies celebrated 16 graduates in May 2017. Thanks to several churches and individuals, as well as a foundation established to help stu-

dents called to missions, 40 students are receiving financial assistance. We are grateful for this continued support and partnership!

One reason for our success is the ability to create and nurture relationships with local leaders. Here are just a few ways that Gateway is partnering with you:

A new facelift on the campus was completed this year. The smaller classroom can now com-fortably seat 14-16 students, and the office area was expanded, making room for a new staff person, and a small faculty lounge area was completed.

Many people have benefitted from our intentional coaching relationships. By asking powerful

questions and expecting commitment, coaching helps you clarify direction and achieve God’s best for yourself and your church. This coaching is open to anyone who is ready to take the “next step!”

The 15-hour Church Planting Certificate complements our state’s vision of planting 500

churches in the next few years. It offers church-planting skills as well as a coaching network for those involved in starting new works around the state. Currently, 16 students are training in this program.

The Bible Teaching Certificate has been met with great enthusiasm across the state. This is a

15-hour certificate that trains anyone desiring to grow in their knowledge of the Bible, and their skill in teaching the Word!

We have recently expanded our reach throughout the state, with classes held in:

Scottsdale: main campus Northside Campus: Calvary Community Church Havasu: Calvary Baptist Church Payson: Payson Christian School Tucson: Mountain View Baptist Church

For more information on the seminary, call 480-941-1993, visit www.gs.edu.or facebook. We are humbled and excited for the calling which God has extended to us, to train up relevant and effective leaders in Arizona for His purpose!

Come see us at our booth at the ASBC in November !

Arizona Baptist Children’s Services & Family Ministries (ABCS) ABCS remains committed to orphan care by licensing loving, Christian families to provide foster and/or adoptive homes for children in the state’s care. ABCS partners with churches to help create awareness about foster care, as well as to promote upcoming training classes and resources. Recently, ABCS creat-ed bookmarks for our Arms of Love Foster Care ministry that matched this year’s VBS theme and fea-tured children in the state’s care who are available for adoption and in need of a forever home. It was a blessing to have 63 churches and three schools distribute more than 8,600 bookmarks through Vacation Bible Schools, raising awareness and generating thousands of prayers for foster children. The new Community Resource Centers (CRC) ministry continues to expand with a resource center re-cently opened in Yuma, and another small resource center opening in Tucson. So far in 2017 35,086 food boxes, 5,768 clothing bags and 1,779 hygiene bags have been distributed through CRCs including the Rio Vista Center, Casa de Amor, Caring Ministries and the ABCS resource centers at Tucson Chi-nese Baptist Church and the ABCS Phoenix office at Mission Drive. The Yuma center’s grand opening was in July, and 113 families received food boxes in the first few weeks it was open. The local food bank has already doubled their delivery to the center. Volunteers regularly pray with families visiting for food boxes. As with all of our Community Resource Centers, this ministry points to Jesus and his great love for us. Preparation is underway for Turkey Day at the Rio Vista Center and the holiday food drive at Caring Ministries. Please contact us to learn more about how you can get involved and support families in need. Pursue Life Adult Ministry (PLM) is working toward the goal of establishing an elder care ministry where abled adults and financial supporters help senior adults in need. In partnership with community organizations, and with grant and private donor funds, PLM installed ramps at an elderly woman’s home. She lives near the Phoenix ABCS office, and we connected with her through her church. She de-sired the ramps so that she can remain in the home she has lived in for decades. PLM hopes to meet sim-ilar needs as elder care expands. Currently PLM is organizing a statewide Leadership Council for volun-teers to engage their local communities in adult ministry and activities. The Mission Encounter 360 team took another mission trip in early April to Ciudad Morelos in northern Baja Mexico to serve our local church partner and New Life Pregnancy Center. ABCS has been invest-ing in this community for the past five years. This mission team included Pastors Ashley Evans from 22nd Street Baptist in Tucson, Mark Ellington from College View Baptist Church in Mesa and Dan Gutierrez of Drexel Heights Baptist Church in Tucson, as well as members of their churches. What a blessing for these three churches to come together with ABCS staff to follow the Great Commission and build relationships with each other. Leader Care facilitators continue to reach out to pastors and church leaders to help support them in the important role they play in the body of the church. They provide crisis response, counseling or just a friendly ear to hear the concerns leaders have and the issues they face. Sandy de Jesus recently joined the team to help serve women in ministry. Leader Care is part of ABCS’ New Life Counseling ministry. Several ABCS staff served at or attended Zona Camp. A few of our New Life Counseling team mem-bers were there to provide counseling and crisis intervention. This is the fourth year in a row New Life counselors have been at Zona. New Life Pregnancy Center (NLPC) representatives were also there again this year, hosting purity classes, as well as a class on pregnancy and abortion. Raquel Williams and Tricianne Spacht from NLPC taught the girls’ purity class, while the boys’ purity class was taught by David Trenbeath from the ABCS finance department and Nathan Shook, who works at our front desk in the Phoenix office and is a parent aide. It was a great ABCS team effort! Thank you for your support and prayers. We are blessed to be on mission with you. Please visit abcs.org or call us at (800) 678-0648 to stay connected. Steve Hanna

Associational Report 2017

Our Mission and Vision

Christian Challenge exists to engage college students with the gospel, develop disciples of Jesus Christ, and mobilize servant leaders for the church. We are committed to seeing vibrant communities of college stu-dents, who love God, live for Christ, and serve in the power of the Holy Spirit, impacting every university and community college in Arizona. Our passion is to develop students who LOVE God, LIVE His Word, and SERVE His Church. Our prayer is that every student on every college campus in Arizona would have the op-portunity to hear the gospel and respond to Jesus Christ.

Ministry Making a Difference State Wide

4,475 Collegians impacted in Campus Ministry programs 460 Collegians involved in Campus Ministry programs 86 Collegians involved in leadership development 10 Collegians preparing for church vocations 40 Churches assisted by campus ministry 24 Conversions of college students 205 Conversions of others 50 Collegians serving on short-term mission trips

Campus Missionaries Serving in the Phoenix Metro Area:

Brad Schneeflock – State Collegiate Strategist Trevor Bush – Regional Director ASU Tempe/Downtown/MCC Victoria White – ASU Tempe/MCC Kirstie James – ASU Tempe/MCC Justin Akine – ASU Tempe/MCC Eric Dressler – ASU Tempe/MCC Noah Jaeger – ASU Downtown Margarete Nasir – ASU Downtown Brandon Reimus – ASU Polytech Josiah Cantrell – ASU West Josh Tompkins – GCC

We are extremely excited about what God is doing through Christian Challenge in the state of Arizona and here in the Phoenix Metro area.

Here are two key updates about our ministry here in Phoenix:

1. We have restarted Challenge ministries on the campuses of ASU Downtown and ASU West, to add to the restart of the Poly campus last year. We have assigned staff to those campuses and have begun to see mul-tiple students reached and discipled with the Gospel. We could not be more excited about seeing students reached again on these vital campuses. This is just the beginning of our effort to see every college campus reached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

2. We have made significant inroads to partnering with specific churches in a more direct and intimate way. Specifically speaking we are working with Foothills, Pinnacle, Crosspoint, and Church on Mill at ASU Tempe, Mercy Hill at ASU Downtown, Passion Creek at ASU Polytech, and Hillside at ASU West.

These partnerships are also only the beginning of an effort to truly coordinate the reaching of college stu-dents on campus with the local church. Christian Challenge is a missional arm of the body, but the end goal is to get students reached, discipled, and plugged into a church where they can fellowship with believers of many ages and hopefully get an opportunity to me leaders in the church

CHURCH PLANTING TEAM REPORT

ENGAGED – This is the one word which describes the presence and activity of Church plants in Valley Rim Association. BROTHERHOOD – Describes an encouraging relationship current planters are developing with each other for support / accountability / prayer / resources THE FUTURE – Co Vocational church planters. These are different than Bi Vocational planters

Bi Vocational planters have a secular job to meet the economic needs of their family until such a time as the church plant can support them full time. Bi Vo guys do not plan to stay in the secular job market. We need more of these planters. Co Vocational church planters never plan on leaving their secular jobs. Rather than leave that field they see employment as the pool of unredeemed people God has called them to reach. Pastoring such a plant may require more than one Co Vocational person to supply the leadership needed. Pray that this type of leader becomes the first Wave of a Movement.

LANGUAGES – Korean, Swahili, Spanish, Twi, Ashanti, Tagalog, Creole, English, Chinese, Hindi, Russian, Punjabi, Romanichal, DISCOVER / DEVELOP / DEPLOY Finding, training and sending out a planter. Congregational Strengthening & Evangelism Team Education Directors Report

October 10, 2017 The VRSBA Education Director, Debra Wolfrey, facilitated both the Congregational Strengthening Team and the Evangelism Team in 2017 under the leadership of Rob Gaschler. Team members are Donna Daniel (Corona), Simone Lake (Church on Randall Place), Sandy Eglinton (HiWay), Kelcey Fry (HiWay), and Jerry Walker (Superstition Foothills). Our work is assisted by project managers, Cliff Merrill (Heart of Mesa)-Worship Co-Op, and Josh Barnes (HiWay)- Unmar-rieds Fellowship. Larry Edwards (Heart of Mesa) and Mark Pratt (Tonto Village) will be joining the teams in 2017-2018. The following are some highlights of our work:

Worship Co-op: The Co-op has worked with three churches this year: Summit Vista, Light in the Desert, and Tempe Christian.

VBS- VRSBA held a leader’s clinic in May. 73 attended, representing 10 churches. The “Go

VBS” Partnership with Palm Valley brought one hundred teens to eight churches to conduct a week of Vacation Bible Schools resulting in a collective attendance of 274 children with 34 de-cisions. This partnership took place in June.

The Singles Fellowship for Valley Rim churches is starting this fall. They worked on building the

leadership and branding the project with logos and a web presence (Facebook). Joshua Barnes, from HiWay Baptist is project manager. This team is planning a monthly fellowship to give social, service, and adventure opportunities to unmarrieds, age 23-40.

Summer Missionaries- Five local missionaries served, assisting seven Vacation Bible Schools,

two weeks of children’s camp, Zona Yuth camp, ASBC national convention, and the Equipped to Excel conference. A sincere thanks goes to Dylan Tenney, Alex Steffes, Eleanor Jimenez, Dillon Moffett, and Josh Bond.

We sponsored two weeks of Character Children’s Camp in Christopher Creek. 148 children at-

tending, 17 plus decisions.

Equipped to Excel, a small group training conference, was held in July, led by LifeWay consult-ants/editors (Wayne Poling and Ken Braddy) and the State children’s ministry team. 55 attend-ed.

My John 3:16, an evangelism conference, was taught by Eddie Pearson in May. Attenders were

shown a way to use John 3:16 and the Navigator’s Bridge to share the gospel. 40 attended, rep-resenting 5 churches.

Thailand Mission Trip- 2017 has been the preparation year for a mission trip to Thailand to assist

IMB missionaries, Doug and Cheryl Derbyshire. The trip will take place January 18-28 and will feature four medical clinics and four English camps in four villages in the Isaan province, targeting an unreached people group in that region. All monies have been raised except what is needed for the pharmacy for two of the medical clinics. Each medical clinic costs $350. Would your church assist in this way?

2017 Associational Directors Report At the height of it’s popularity, 1948, there were in excess of 4,000 drive‐in theaters across America. Many of us can recall spending the night at the movies on the original big screen. Some‐

mes we sat listening from a silver box hanging on our door. Later, you could clip something to your antenna and listen through your stereo. What a step up! Some are old enough to remember when drive‐ins included play grounds where kids could entertain themselves. And who can forget the dancing hot dog jumping into the bun! For some, there are a lot of memories a ached to the drive‐ins. But, alas, for many, drive‐in movie theaters are themselves a memory. Today there remain approximately 330 theaters in the country. In Arizona, only one remains, the West Wind Glendale 9. I have some memories from that place! It was here I saw Wrath of Khan, Rocky and Where the Buffalo Roams (not a great movie by the way). What got me thinking about drive‐in movie theaters was seeing the former Apache Drive‐in in Globe. I passed it on the way to Burton, Arizona for a conference. There it sat. The screen s ll stands, as does the snack bar and projec on building. Though the weeds have over taken where the cars once parked, you can s ll see the poles for the speakers. As I looked at the place, I grew nostalgic. It was kind of cool that at a place with mul ple screens, you could peak in on other movies without having the purchase another cket. What led to the demise of the drive‐in theater? Simple, the increasing quality of walk‐in movie theaters. When people realized they could have the same experience at a walk‐in theater, drive‐ins started declining. Now, in general, people don’t even consider the possibility of wai ng un l dark and si ng in their car on a warm or chilly evening, when they can go to an air condi oned/heated theater at any me of the day and experience superior sound and op cs. But, get this, what happened to drive‐ins, is transpiring in walk‐ins as well. Since the 60s a end‐ance at walk‐in theaters has been on the decline. Over the last 10 years a endance at the movies has decline by over a million people. Why? Because of varying methods of consuming movies. Now people can entertain themselves at their homes, with a high quality image and phenomenal sound. What is interes ng to note is that over the last 70 plus years, despite the changing venues and methods of consump on, one thing has remained. People’s desire for entertainment. Most no longer go to drive‐ins, but they s ll wish to see movies. They aren’t going to walk‐ins as much as they used to, but, people s ll watch movies at home or on a portable device. They may not buy DVDs as once was the case. However, the amount of gigabytes of entertainment that is streamed con nues to rise. People want their movies and TV shows. They’ve just altered the method of de‐livery. It has been said of the movie industry that a endance at walk‐ins over the last 50 years has been stagnant or declining. As a ministry leader, does this sound familiar? We are constantly bombard‐ed with news of the majority of churches facing the same phenomena. For many

42

decades, people have been reluctant to show up on Sunday nights. Even fewer on Wednesday. But, now we are witnessing a decline in the prime me hour of Sunday mornings. We take this to mean that people are not interested in God or things spiritual. I don’t believe this to be the case. Like with entertainment, people con nue to be interested in the spiritual. A search of internet data reveals this. They may not turn to orthodox spirituality. But, people are s ll seeking an an‐swer to the spiritual aspect of life. Problem is, Chris anity is not the only op on presented for answering their ques ons, for filling their void. People seeking answers will encounter Buddhism, Wicca, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Transcendental Medita on, Ba’hi, Scientology or any other host of pseudo‐religious systems. But the fact of the ma er is, people s ll have ques ons and interest in the non‐corporeal, the spiritual. Those who turn to God as revealed by His son Jesus, will not necessarily seek Him in the ways previous genera ons have. They may meet in a house church or on a me other than Sunday morning. They may not show up to Sunday School, but they’ll gather with a small group in their homes. People looking for answers may be inclined to push back more and not accept the reli‐gious pla tudes which were once accepted without ques on. Instead, they seek deeper more meaningful answers to their ques ons. But, however they approach the issue, they s ll seek truth and an encounter with God. People will never give up the search for God, even if they aren’t sure that He is who they are seeking. As disciples of Jesus, we are resources of spiritual life, not advocates for a par cular method of distribu on for someone to find eternal life. Maybe when you came to know Jesus, it was during a two‐week revival accompanied by a fantas c song leader. Possibly the case with you is disciple‐ship is a group of men similar to your age mee ng in a classroom on Sunday mornings at a church building. This helps you experience new life. But, those were simply the means of finding Jesus. They are not a sacred path all must walk in order to find him. A lady once commented to me about how people “tex ng in church” disturbed her. Then I point‐ed out that some folks, such as my wife, consume the Bible on their phones. You could see her wheels turning and she responded “Oh, I never considered that.” The “ mes, they are a changin,” there is no mistaking that. Unless we, as followers of Jesus, embrace our responsibility to be salt and light and cease from being advocates for a me long past, we will fail to fulfill our responsibility to make disciples. People may not come to church. But, if we are faithful to our Lord, people will con nue to come to God and discover that new quality of life He provides. Because of the Cross, Brother Jim
