LAW & SAFETY There have been many accidents at the intersection of E. Mitchell and Red Bud. Duke has already installed additional lighting. Here is an update from DOTE: • Chevron signs will be installed through the curve to

supplement the existing night arrows. Chevrons are smaller, rectangular signs typically mounted low to the ground. • Our staff visited the site and saw that the chevron signs

have been installed; however, they feel that the signs need to be repositioned for better visibility. They will have Public Services perform this operation.

• A curve warning sign will also be added to the left side of the roadway to further emphasize the upcoming change in direction along the roadway. • Again, when our staff visited the site they became aware

that these signs have not yet been installed. They will look into fulfilling this request as soon as possible.

• It will take DOTE staff about a month to prepare a funding application to send to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) (This email was from 2/20). ODOT will review and evaluate the application. • A: Staff is finalizing estimates and are hoping to submit

the application to ODOT by the end of this week (it took a little longer than anticipated).

If you have additional questions, or require more information, please let us know.

BEAUTIFICATION

Dear Neighbors, Family and Friends,

This year North Avondale teamed up with Cincinnati Parks for Green Up Day and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful for the Great American Clean Up. Maura Wolf deserves the credit for helping us organize the work accomplished on Saturday, 4/13, at Seasongood Square Park, as well as Sarah Koucky for helping me with the beautiful gardens there; and, much appreciation goes to Richard Jackson and Mary Piper for the spectacular gardens at Dana Triangle, and beyond! Well, I must say, our Parks look beautiful and alive. All the mulch was spread around the trees & in the flower beds and the appearance from the street looks so good. The playground looks clean with the fresh new mulch. WE ARE TEAM WORK! Many thanks to all of you who helped & joined in by carrying mulch via wheelbarrow, spreading mulch, raking leaves, removing dead plants, managing the sign-in table, and picking up litter on surrounding streets. A sincere thank you and much appreciation from all of us to the following partners and participants: • North Avondale’s 5 Star Community Volunteers:

Abby Allen & Ethan Perry, Janet & Bob Banks, Fred Fegan, Jennifer Harten, Paul Harten, Angel Henry, Grace & Brian Hill, Richard Jackson, Sarah Koucky, Hanne Løken Larsen, Charlene Morse, Laurie Pike, Mary Piper, Mark Schuller, Ann & Stan Wong, Maura & J Miles Wolf. Carolyn Gillman, Jake Gillman, Teresa Harten and Regine Moulton, are helping outside of our work day. Cheers to all of you, and those who regularly pick up litter, help with gardening, and keep our neighborhood beautiful and safe!

• 40 UC Student Volunteers and the chief organizer Fran Larkin, Director, UC’s Center for Community Engagement. The students were nothing short of amazing! They worked diligently with a fabulous work ethic!

• Cincinnati Parks Grounds Crew, Jennifer Harten, Interim Superintendent for the East District, and Jim Burkhardt who organized the work plan, and helped get all the tools, the mulch and Pizza. Christyl Johnson-Roberts, Volunteer Coordinator, who helped with the UC student volunteer connection and the Park’s new online Green Up volunteer registry. So thankful for this fabulous team!

• Keep Cincinnati Beautiful (KCB) Emily Bottoni, Volunteer Program Coordinator, provided several supplies: gloves, tee shirts, water, and bags for trash and recycling; thanks to all KCB funders as well. Fantastic Partners!

• Cincinnati Police Department, District 4, Officer Hill provided security with his keen smile. A great addition to our team!

• City’s Department of Public Services Damon Ulmer coordinated picking up the 20+ bags of litter and

STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT - Joint Committee of NANA and NABA

3864 Reading - Rubel Property: The Port Authority is stabilizing this historically significant property at the request of NANA, NABA and the City. The Rubel property was designed by renowned architect Samuel Hannaford. Because it is located in our Business District, it is eligible for grant funding for a business or mixed-use (residential/offices/business). NANA and NABA provided partial funding for stabilization -$30,000- obtained through a City of Cincinnati Neighborhood Business District Improvement Program (NBDIP) grant. The Landbank agreed to retain title, stabilize the property, rebuild the porch, fix the slate roof, and to consult with NANA/NABA on the sale and redevelopment of the property. ATTN: Contact us if you are interested in starting a business in this property at [email protected]. Many thanks to Megan Meyer and Liz Eddy of the Port Authority/Landbank, Kathleen Colley, City’s Department of Community and Economic Development, and SSRG (Structural Systems Repair Group), the firm completing the stabilization work. 2-acre City-Owned Vacant Lot Redevelopment at Reading and Paddock: The City plans to work with NANA and NABA to issue an RFQ (Request for Qualifications) to secure a developer who will develop the property consistent with our community’s vision. The RFQ committee will be reforming so contact us at [email protected] if you can help.

North Avondale Gateway Sign at the Dana Triangle: It is completed and looks fabulous! This project was funded with a grant obtained by NABA and NANA through the City’s NBDIP (2014). Many thanks to our Gateway Sign Team: Amy Harten, Richard Jackson, Hanne Løken Larsen, Mary Piper, Maura and J Miles Wolf, and City of Cincinnati DOTE representatives Laura Martin and Jeff Stein.

Pedestrian Safety Requests: City plans to implement a few of our several requests: 1) Install pedestrian-triggered flashing lights and crosswalk paddle on Clinton Springs at North Avondale Montessori School, and 2) Install temporary radar

signs on Reading Road, one northbound and one southbound in our neighborhood business district. A sincere thank you to David Emery for heading up the committee.

Traffic Calming at the intersection of Reading and Paddock Roads, is hopefully being addressed with a redesign of the intersection and enhancements along Reading in our business district. Also, See Law and Safety Report to address Red Bud and Mitchell intersection: many thanks to Carolyn Gillman, Law and Safety Chair, who is working with City for solutions.

Spring 3-season Banners Along Reading Road and Clinton Springs will be spruced up and re-installed, funded by NABA, through City of Cincinnati Neighborhood Business District Support Funds.

All of the above projects will benefit from participation from NANA members to maximize community success. Please consider volunteering by contacting us at [email protected]

The North Avondale Business Association (NABA) represents the collective interests of North Avondale businesses to the City of Cincinnati and acts as a pooled knowledge source for the many small business owners of the neighborhood. NABA works collaboratively with NANA and the City of Cincinnati, planning and funding community projects to achieve our mutual goals, making North Avondale a great place to establish and grow small business. Join us at our next meeting Monday, May 27, 2019, 7pm, 938 Avondale Ave. To become a member of NABA, contact [email protected].
