Pastor's COLUMN

This week’s 2nd Collection is for the CLERGY BENEFIT TRUST. We will pass out envelopes at the Drive-in Mass and place envelopes in the pews. Please be sure to make a notation on your check “Clergy Trust.” There are 3 collections each year to fund the health and retirement needs of the active and retired clergy: Christmas, Easter, and the 3rd Sunday in September. Your support is greatly needed. Thank you on their behalf and mine. It is with sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Knight’s of Columbus Grand Knight Ed Burke. Ed passed into Eternal life on the mourning of Friday, September 10th. Ed had been sick for the past year and battled valiantly against an aggressive form of cancer. Knights, are known to promote the sanctity of life, from the moment of conception to a natural death, and Ed’s fight against this disease exemplified these values! Looking back on the 10 years of his service as Grand Knight has brought forth great memories of his Christian example and journey. Over a decade ago that he stepped into the rectory and informed me that he had just retired and needed to keep busy and were there any ways he could serve the parish. I told him, Casey Rein and Mike Seyffert, that I ‘d like to restart the Marshfield Myles Standish Knights of Columbus, and could he help with this effort. Mike became the first Grand Knight and Ed succeeded him a few years later. With his gentle manner and slow and steady pace he has built a vital ministry in our parish, particularly in this time of Pandemic. He and Casey were the first two Knights I approached about the idea of a Drive-In Mass, and from there they took over with the logistics of parking, traffic flow, taking an offertory collection and facilitating the distribution of Holy Communion. It was an inspiration to his brother Knights each time he was able to help out at this Sunday Mass, and I suspect something for which he looked forward to each week. It is my hope that this ministry in part inspired his fight against the disease. Looking back over the last few weeks, he was more worried about rescheduling a blood drive (the Blood Mobile was unable to make the date because of mechanical difficulties) than he seemed to be of his own health issues. St. Paul tells us that “one day we will have to stand before the Lord and make an accounting in what we have done in our body…” It is rather pleasant for me to think of Ed standing before God, reunited with his proud parents, making this accounting! Eternal rest grant unto Him. Our Religious Education-CCD Year began this past week, and I would like to recognize our Confirmation students (9th through 11th grade) who will be with us at the Sunday 7:00pm Mass. The 1st-5th Grades met last Tuesday, and this coming Tuesday we will welcome back the 6th—8th grade students. It is so nice to have the kids back in class and socializing with one another. We have reduced our classes by fifty percent given the ongoing Pandemic and have made appropriate preparations in the parish hall. If you have not registered yet please contact our CCD Director Catherine Rein. Saturday, October 2nd is our Blessing of Animals, which will be held in the courtyard with Coffee and Donuts to follow. We will have a special Blessing of the Dogs on Sunday the 3rd at the 8:30 Mass. We have a special St. Francis medal for their collars. Our Grand Annual is processing well and we hope to wrap it up in early November. If you haven’t made a pledge, please consider making one, as our needs are significant. God Bless your generosity.

CATECHETICAL CORNER

Our Question of the Week:k:

Q. If God knew Judas would betray Jesus, why did God create him? Why did Jesus choose

him as an apostle ?

Answer: To be sure, God knows everything that all of us do before he creates us. It is part of the mystery of his providence that God summons to existence those he know who would commit acts of evil or who will refuse the Kingdom of God and its values. Part of this has to do with our freedom. If God only created those he knew would obey him and chose the kingdom, our freedom would be artificial and ’front loaded.” Another aspect of this I that our lives are not simply about us. We are part of a bigger plan. Our creation by God is not only for us but also for others. Since God can draw good things even from evil actions, even the wicked are mysteriously tied into his provi-dence. Clearly, however, God does not want or will that any should do evil, but knowing that they will, he can allow it so as to draw forth greater good. This does not render evil acts good or reduce either the freedom of sinners to act on their guilt. Rather, it illustrates God’ power and authority over all things. As for Judas, the Lord certainly knew he would be-tray him (cf Jn 6:66). Knowing this, the Lord permit-ted Judas to freely act but did not force him to do so or lock him into some role. He, in his providence, al-lowed this action to unleash the Passion whereby he would save us. Q. Why does the priest whisper some of the pray-ers at Mass? Shouldn’t we be able to hear every-thing? Answer: There are certain prayers that are supposed to be said by the priest in a low voice. Generally, these pertain to his personal preparation for Commun-ion, though two of them pertain to the mixing of the water and wine and preparation of the gifts. The use of the whispered voice has a complex history, and in the traditional Latin Mass nearly the entire Eucharis-tic prayer is whispered. This illustrates the sacredness of the texts. But we should also recall the entire Eu-charistic prayer from the Sanctus through the Our Fa-ther is addressed to God the Father. While it is helpful for the congregation to hear the prayer, it is not abso-lutely necessary since the prayer is addressed to God the Father.
