What will city life be like in the future?
Have a look at two future cities.
C lubS tead
Can you imagine a city in a skyscraper? Scientists are already planning a skyscraper city for the future.
The city is going to be 500 metres high. This enormous building is going to have farms, offices, department stores, schools and residential neighbourhoods. Life in the skyscraper will be very convenient. Residents are going to live, work, study and shop in one big building.
Hi-tech farms inside the building are going to provide 50,000 people with food. The farms are going to have cows and chickens for fresh milk and eggs, and farmers are going to grow fruit and vegetables. Imagine, it will only take 10 minutes for an egg to get from the chicken to your table!
Inside the skyscraper, the temperature is always going to be 25 degrees centigrade. You’ll never need a coat or an umbrella!
The skyscraper is going to be environmentally friendly. It is going to have its own power station using solar power and wind energy.

Is it a boat or an island? No, it’s ClubStead, the city on the sea. Architects and engineers are going to build ClubStead on a floating platform in the ocean. It is going to have 15,000 square metres of space, enough space for 200 residents and 70 workers. Residents won’t be bored. In addition to private flats, ClubStead is going to have art galleries, tennis courts, restaurants and offices.
Bad weather won’t be a problem. ClubStead is going to have 10-metre walls to protect it from the winds and waves. Plus, unlike a city on land, ClubStead will move to a warmer location if it gets cold.
Because it is in the ocean, ClubStead is going to be independent. The residents are going to build a new society and make their own rules. Who knows, maybe children won’t go to school! One thing is certain, people are going to need a lot of money to buy a house there.

Living in Cities Affects the Brain
45
50
55
Do you feel tired and nervous after a day in the city? Do you sometimes panic on a crowded street? Don’t worry, it’s not an illness. It’s the city. Scientists have discovered that living in the city can be damaging to the brain.
It’s fun to live in the city because there are big shopping centres, theatres, museums and art galleries. But cities can also be very unhealthy. For many years, scientists have studied the way cities affect our bodies. Now they are studying how cities affect our minds, and the results are frightening.
Scientists have found that cities can cause anger, fatigue and memory problems. Why is this? Cities are too crowded and noisy. While you’re walking down a crowded street, for example, you’re watching out for cars, buses, lorries and other people. In doing this, your mind uses a lot of energy and your brain gets tired.
Marc Berman, a psychologist at the University of Michigan, has shown that city life can affect your school marks. Berman tested a group of students. Some students walked in the park and others walked in the streets. Afterwards, the students took a test. The students walking in the streets got much lower marks than the other students.
What can we do about this? There is an easy solution: nature. Flowers, trees and open spaces are good for the mind. Scientists have discovered that nature can
be a medicine. If hospital patients see trees and flowers from their window, they will get better faster.
If students walk in the park before an exam, they will get better marks. “It’s not an accident that Central Park is in the middle of Manhattan, (New York),” says Marc Berman. “They needed to put a park there.”
Our cities are getting bigger and bigger. Unless we bring nature into the city, we will all go mad.
