Stainless steel disc measuring system for relative viscosity measurements in a 600-ml beaker.

This system is used for measurements in accordance with the ASTM-ISO 2555 standard. It is supplied as standard on the First RM (MS 2 to 7) and can also be used with

the Rheomat RM100, RM200 and RM180.

DYMANIC VISCOSITY η (ETA) :It is defined by the NEWTON equation:And quantify measurement of internal friction of fluid. His determination needs to apply to the fluid a Shear rate (D), and tomeasure the resistant Shear stress (τ) to this rotation.

SHEAR RATE: D (γ)is the shearing which subjected by the product in the application. Itis known for measuring geometries with small gap. It is not thespeed of rotation of the bob (in rpm !).

Either a sheared fluid, by a laminar move (dV), between two parallelplates with a surface (S) and separate by a distance dx.

SHEAR STRESS: τ (TAU)

There is the shearing force (F), with which the sample answers to theshear rate (D), divided by the contact surface (S).

RHEOLOGY:There is the « science » of « flow ».Associated physical measurements, realised with the hand of Rheometers, enables the visualisation of the behaviour of the product in various flow , temperature andtime conditions .

RHEOGRAMS:displayed curves of the flow behaviour of a fluid.The curves τ = f(D) enables, by adapted fitting, the accessto direct related parameters with the application.

ROTATING VISCOMETER:

a - With coaxial cylindersThe fluid is sheared between two coaxial cylinders, withradius Ri and Ra and a length L, by a laminar move whichare breaking down in multi-layer with different angularspeed from 0 (for the layer in contact with the fixed cylinder)to ω0 (for the layer in contact with the rotating bob). Therelative move of layers towards others give, a shear rate Dand one Shear stress τ.By imposing ω0 and measuring M, the resisting torque tothis rotation, we calculate D and τ according:

b- With Cone-Plate:The fluid is placed between a Plate and a Cone with angle δ (< 3°).The cone, maintained to a constant speed induce a laminarshearing move. In those conditions, τ and D are constant inthe gap, according:

GLOSSARY

ASTM: American Society of Testing Materials. AmericanOrganisation in charge of creation of ASTM standards.

BINGHAM: rheological flow behaviour, which characterizeplastic fluids (shear-thinning, with yield stress).

CASSON: rheological flow behaviour, enables the precisedetermination of yield stress of non-linear plastic samples.

Measuring bob (or spindle): immerged element in the fluidwhich rotate and measure the resistant torque of sample,according Searle principle.

Centipoise (cP): measuring Unit of dynamic viscosity in theMKSA system; equivalent to mPa.s in SI system.

Coaxial Cylinders: One cylinder with cap contain the sample(cup) and one cylinder with smaller size rotate inside (bob)and impose the shear rate (D) known in sample. (i.e. DINStandard).

Cone-plate: Measuring geometry, composed by one plateon which the sample is putted down, and by a cone with asmall angle (max. 2°), which shear the product.

D (or γ): Shear rate really imposed to the measured fluid; itis expressed in s-1.

Dilatancy: Increase of viscosity on the effect of speed ofrotation.

DIN: German original standard, which definite measuringgeometry with defined shear rate. became ISO 3219.

ETA (η, Dynamic Viscosity): quantify of internal frictions ina fluid; determined by rotating principle: resistant torque toa rotation; expressed in Pa.s.

Measuring Geometry: Group of bob and cup or cone-plateused to realise viscosity measurement. It enables, if it’s welldefined, to control the shear rate (D) subjected by the product.

K: Consistency Coefficient according Ostwald model; it informson the sample viscosity at 1 s-1.

KREBBS Unit: Viscosity measuring unit obtained with themeasuring bob KU110, at 200 rpm.

M (mNm): Measured torque in answer to the rotation ofmeasuring bob, function of the sample viscosity.

N: Speed of rotation of motor, in rpm, which generates ashear rate (D) which depends of the measuring geometryused.

n: Behaviour Index of Ostwald model; it informs on the moreor less shear-thinning character of the sample.

NEWTON: Rheological flow behaviour, which characterizefluids for which only the temperature has an influence onviscosity.

OSTWALD: Rheological flow behaviour, which characterizepseudo-plastic fluids : shear-thinning without yield stress.

Pa.s: Official measuring Unit, in SI system, of the dynamicviscosity (Eta). For fluid products, we use mPa.s (=cPoises). Ex: Water viscosity at 20°C = 1 mPa.s.

Peltier (effect): Electric Thermostatisation system by quickexchange of calories between two plate elements.

Plate-plate: measuring geometry composed by a plate on which the sample is putted down, and by another upper rotative plate which shear the product, inserted in the adjustable gap (h).

Plastic: For a fluid with a viscosity which decrease linearlyor not on the effect of increasing of speed, and which ownsa yield value.

Poise (P): Measuring Unit of dynamic viscosity in MKSA system; equivalent to 0.1 Pa.s, in SI system.

Pseudo-plastic: For a fluid with a viscosity which decreaseon the effect of increasing of speed, and which has no yieldvalue (flows by gravity).

Pt100: Temperature sensor, indicating the sample temperatureduring the viscosity measurement.

Rheogram: Flow curve obtained by a continuous ramp (or by steps) of shear rates, enables flow behaviour sample display.

Rheology: Science of flow which studies deformation properties of fluids on various factors.

Rheometer: Measuring Instrument enables studies of flowbehaviour of fluids.

Rheopexy: Increase of viscosity during the time, independentof the speed.

s-1: Unit of the Shear rate (D), on which the sample is subjected in a defined geometry.

Yield stress (τ0): Minimum Force under which the producthas a solid behaviour.

Tau (τ, Shear stress): Force by unit of surface with whichthe fluid answer to the rotation; it directly comes from measured torque and from the surface of bob used; expressed in Pa.

Thermostatisation: Maintain and set sample temperature;needs accessories like bath, cryostat, Thermostating cell.

Thixotropy: Reversible decrease of viscosity, Time dependent,and not in relation to the speed.

Viscometer: Rotating measuring instrument enables dynamic viscosity measurement (Eta), at one rotation speed(N) or to a defined shear rate (D).
