So what is different with 5G?

• The use cases for wireless is expanding outside the traditional

use cases of telephony and mobile broadband.

• 3GPP has a clear goal that in Release 16 and onwards that the

scope shall increase.

and development of new use cases are accelerating. It is a clear

Satellite .. Where is the innovation?

• Tier 1 operators leading the charge and developing new white

box (WB) concepts: 5G RAN intelligent controller, Dedicated

Internet WB, Network Cloud (WB).

• Satellite ground station vendors have traditionally rolled out

proprietary network solutions focused on internet or mobile

backhaul.

• Satellite service providers have traditionally focussed on selling

Mhz and capacity.

• There is a big opportunity for tighter integration of satellite

services with terrestrial networks and adopt open standards and

frameworks.

5G is the industry catalyst pushing the satellite community

to evolve as a full partner into the 5G Unified Network

Infrastructure (wired, wireless, terrestrial, and satellite).

1. White box interoperability: Satellite evolution should

seamlessly support and interoperate with key

networking infrastructure used to support 5G (SD-

WAN, Network Slicing, hybrid multi-path backhaul).

2. Networks of Networks: 5G provides framework not

only to connect mobile services but also to create

new type of connections back to the 5GC. New

satellite based enterprise connectivity offering based

on 5G framework.
