THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS VOTED TO CANCEL THE 2020 LIONS INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION, MAKING MONTREAL, CANADA OUR NEXT INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IN 2021. The Board of Directors has voted to cancel the 2020 International Convention due to concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19).

After evaluating a variety of different options including moving the convention to a different venue or postponing the convention to a later date, the Board of Directors voted to cancel the 2020 convention. This decision was made with the health and safety of our Lions, staff and vendors in mind.

Canceling the International Convention for 2020 impacts international officer continuity and candidate elections. After review of the International Constitution and By-Laws, this impact is outlined below:

• Executive officers and international directors will continue in their respective positions until the 2021 convention in Montreal. All candidate elections for these positions shall comply with the provisions of the International Constitution and By-Laws or election at the convention in Montreal.

• An international director from the areas of Africa and Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the Islands of the South Pacific is permitted only in even-numbered years. As a result, no director from Africa or Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the Islands of the South Pacific would be eligible for election until the 2022 convention.

• Barring any district election complaints, district governors, first vice district governors and second vice district governors elected during a convention of their respective districts will be accepted by Lions International. The International Board of Directors intends to authorize commencement of the DG terms beginning July 1, 2020. We are disappointed that we will not be able to move forward with this international event, but we are optimistic that with each new day there is hope, and as Lions we will continue to find new ways to put our kindness in action while safely serving our communities.

Sincerely,

Jung-Yul Choi

International President, Lions Clubs International

Hello Fellow Lions-

I have a question for each of you. Why did you become a Lion and why do you stay a Lion? I was asked to be a Lion, and as a social worker, I know people fall through the cracks of many programs. It makes me very happy to be able to help where the programs aren’t able to.

My favorite part of being District Governor is hearing your stories at club meetings. We Serve! How are you fulfilling this motto? Does your club talk about your mission? Have you tried a new service project lately? Have you fallen into a rut? Could you try something new or improved? If you have pull tabs in your club, is everyone happy with the service project’s or don’t you ask?

The number one reason people quit clubs is they aren’t happy with the club’s mission. Maybe you have to adjust yours if members aren’t happy. Try to have a meeting just about that. Get everyone’s input not just a core few people. I truly see change is hard but we proved it is possible to try different things and the world doesn’t end.

I hope everyone can stay busy while we shelter in place! Maybe we can find new ways to have club meetings. I hope this doesn’t last too long and we can meet and be together soon!

I am proud of all of you are doing Kid Sight Screenings. They are very successful. Keep up the good work, (after we are done sheltering in place)! Helen Keller would be so happy that 95 years later we are still answering her plea, of being “Knights of the Blind”! Pat yourselves on the back!

Stay busy. Keep Safe!

Sincerely, DG Tracy

Dear Lions, Lioness, & Leos of 5M6,

I am sitting here today finishing up our district newsletter, and it is of course mostly filled with cancellation notices of one kind or another. Like you, these cancellations of events and other things we have looked forward to doing have taken an emotional and psychological toll in that they are just a few more grim reminders of a new reality that none of us could have seen ourselves living in months ago. This virus is testing the strength, endurance, patience, faith, hope, love & humanity of people in most countries of the world right now. It is changing the way we live, work, and serve.

In these times of uncertainty and sometimes anxiety and fear, hold fast to the things that bring you joy and comfort and offer you a glimpse of normalcy in your day however small they may be. When I feel alone and troubled, it is often times music that helps me transcend the darkness in my life. Not only is it the way I pray, but it is also the most relaxed and uncontrolled way I have of expressing myself which in itself can be very therapeutic.

Let’s hope and pray for everyone’s health and safety and hold up those who are need of our prayers right now. Below, you will find a youtube link to my nephew Devin singing Lion’s Hallelujah at the Midwinter Convention this past January. Take care and God Bless!

Good Morning to the Lions, Leos and Lioness of MD5M, A meeting was held with the MD5M Council of Governors via Go To Meeting. This meeting was called with support of the members of the MD5M Convention Committee. It was decided that due to the many unknowns relating to the COVID1-19 pandemic, it would not be prudent at this time to hold the 2020 Multiple District Convention as planned.

We all believe that the safety of our Lions family, as well as those working to support our Convention in Rochester, must be our primary focus. We are not confident that a major change will happen by May 1st to proceed with no risk to the attendees.

I want to thank the Rochester Convention Committee for all the work they’ve done over the past 2 years to bring their vision of a great MD5M convention to life. I know it would have been an amazing weekend!

Our MD5M Rochester Convention Chair has been in contact with both the Rochester Civic Center and the Kahler Hotel. Information about cancelling / releasing the room block for all hotel bookings will be coming to those registered. Information will also be coming to those registered to inform them, and begin processing refunds in a timely manner.

Committee Chairs will be engaged to help with the processes that need to be addressed from the convention. Those details will follow soon. I ask that each of you be patient with us as this is clearly a unique situation for all of us.

Please share and stay safe, CC Rob Rand MD5M Council Chair 2019-2020

The April 20, 2020 LIONS DAY at FMSC will be postponed!!

We are looking at 2 possible dates to reschedule the LIONS DAY of SERVICE event. These 2 days are available at all 3 sites (Chanhassen, Coon Rapids and Eagan).

The 2 dates are Monday, October 5th OR Tuesday, October 20th

We were informed that this week the VERY last of the meals that were at their sites are being shipped out. So, when the food packing begins again there will be a HUGE demand for volunteers to pack the food

and, of course, for donations!!

For more information about FMSC, or more about how you can make a difference right now, visit:

The Gala committee has come up with a new date for the party. Please mark Friday October 23, 2020 on your Calendars as the new date.

The Board of Directors of the MD5M Lions KidSight Foundation, Inc

has voted to suspend all KidSight vision screening activities until

further notice.

This action is being taken due to the impact of Covid-19 on the

normal ability of Lions to provide screening in a safe environment.

We must ensure the safety of our Lions as well as the children

and educational professionals that they would interact with.

Hopefully, this suspension will be of short duration and we can

once again provide needed vision screening to our communities.

Please let us know if you have any questions and thank you for

your understanding and cooperation.
