Term 4 Stage 1 Week 1 Numeracy

Edgeworth Heights Public School Learning Grids Stage 1 Term 4 (week 1) 20.09.21

The expectation is that you complete 4 activities over the week. This week we will be learning to:

• Use a calendar to identify personally significant events, days and dates. • Estimate and measure the duration of an event using a repeated informal unit. • Record hour and half-hour time on analog clocks. • Represent halves, quarters, and eights. • Use place value to count, order, read and represent 2- and 3-digit numbers. • To skip count by 3’s.

• Each day you should be attempting 1 activity. Activities with a P are Must Do tasks. These are to be submitted for feedback from teachers. You need to upload your P task on Seesaw and return the paper /home learning book copy of the task to the school when requested by your teacher.

Activities 1. Working With O’clock

Task: When looking at a clock we can see there is an hour hand and a minute hand. Using Stencil 1, read the time in each box and draw in the minute and hour hands into the clock. Use a different colour for each hand e.g. hour hand in red, minute hand in blue. CHALLENGE: Can you draw your daily routine using clocks? Draw an analog clock showing the times you:

- Wake up - Have breakfast - Start your learning - Have lunch - Have dinner - Go to bed

2. How Fast Am I? Task: How fast can you write your name, run across your backyard or make your bed? Sometimes we do not have a watch or device with us to time how fast we are. Have someone at home time how fast you can complete the following activities by clapping their hands, clicking their fingers or jumping up and down. Activities to time:

1) Write your full name (first and last) 2) Run across your yard 3) Make your bed 4) Brush your teeth 5) Tie your shoes

e.g. It takes me ten claps to write my name but only two claps to say my name. CHALLENGE: Can you think of an activity that would take the same amount of claps, clicks or jumps as one of the activities above?

3. What’s The Time Mr Wolf?

Task: Play the game ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’ using Stencil 3. What was the final results at the end of the game? e.g. I covered 6 clocks and my sister covered 9. Do you think the results would be the same if you played again? CHALLENGE: Without peeking at the clocks in the middle can you draw clocks to match the tiles on the game board? Hint: Think about where the hour hand might be at 3:30. Is it on the 3 or half way between?

4. Calendar Fun

MUST DO P Task: Calendars are so useful in helping us remember important dates and events. Investigate the month of December in the Task 4 stencil and answer the following questions in your workbook.

1) On what day of the week is Christmas Day? 2) How many Mondays are there in December? 3) On what date is the first day of summer? 4) What event takes place on the 31st of

December 2021? 5) How many Sundays are there in December? 6) What day of the week is the 12th of

December? 7) What is the date and day of the week for

Boxing Day? 8) How many events are shown on this

calendar for December? 9) What does your family do on a special

celebration day in December?

5. Fraction This! Task: We use fractions everyday in our lives. Complete the following questions in your workbooks. Make sure you show your working out. a) There were 8 people at Ned’s party. Mum made two large cakes and divided each of them into quarters. Is there enough for everyone at the party? Show your working out. b) Suzy has 12 doughnuts. She shares one-quarter of them with her sister and one quarter with her brother. How many doughnuts does she have left? Show your working out c) Ella said, ‘One eighth is a larger fraction than one quarter because 8 is bigger than 4!’. Is she correct? Show your working out. CHALLENGE: If it takes Toby 10 minutes to walk a quarter of the way to school, how long will his entire walk take? Show your working out.

6. Biggest Number Wins

Task: Using a deck of cards: 1. Remove 10, Jack, Queen, King and Joker

from the playing cards. 2. Shuffle the cards. 3. Each player is dealt 3 cards. 4. Each player makes the biggest number

they can with the cards dealt. 5. Record the number on a piece of paper or

in your workbook. 6. Repeat 5 times. 7. Order the numbers you have recorded

from lowest to highest.

CHALLENGE: 1. Start with 2 numbers if 3 is a bit tricky. 2. Use 4 numbers when 3 becomes too

easy. 3. Order from largest to smallest.

7. What is missing?

Task: Using Stencil 7 carefully write in the missing numbers on the hundreds square. Use a coloured pencil so the numbers stand out. Practise counting by 3’s. Start at 1 until you are confident and then try starting at a different number. Can you go backwards?

8. Magic Number

Task: Follow these instructions to find your own special magic number. 1. Write down the day and month and year of

your birthday. Eg 06/12/2014 2. Add the numbers together between the / to

make a sum eg 0+6/ 1+2/ 2+0+1+4 becomes 6+3+ 7= 16

3. Write your special magic number on a page in your workbook.

4. Now write 4 additions sums and 5 takeaways that have your Magic Number in them.

My magic number is 26

Additions 20+6= 26 10+10+6=26 5+5+5+5+6=26 16+10= 26 Subtractions 30-4=26 45-19=26 40-14=26 100- 74=26
