1. Transportation Research Center for Livable Communities (TRCLC)
• The Transportation Research Center for Livable Communities (TRCLC), housed at
Western Michigan University, was established in 2013 as a Tier 1 University
Transportation Center (UTC) funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
• The center aims to address the nation's critical transportation challenges through the
prism of livable communities with a particular focus on bringing technological advances
to aid the development of livable communities.
• The Center’s primary goal is to improve affordable and environmentally sustainable
transportation options for conventionally underserved communities with special attention
paid to non-motorized travel, pedestrian and bicycle safety, job accessibility and 'smart'
transport technologies.
• The TRCLC consortium includes universities shown below:

2. TRCLC Activities
The TRCLC coordinates efforts across 30 top researchers in associated fields to collectively
enable livable communities through transportation research, education and workforce
development and technology transfer.
Research:
• Currently the TRCLC research is reversing decades of development trends that have
led to increasingly longer trips, poor pedestrian and bicycle access, traffic congestion,
adverse environmental impacts and inadequate services for people with disabilities.
The TRCLC have delivered research findings to decision-makers and stakeholders in
forms that can be easily integrated into planning and implementation.
• 48 research projects were funded in the amount of $3.7 million since 2014.
• 28 projects were completed.

Education & Student Support:
• The TRCLC provides undergraduate and graduate students with research
opportunities with full tuition and stipend supports.
• The center also provides research funds to graduate students in the amount of $4,000
for each project. Students address the topics related to livable communities such as
enhancing mobility, accessibility and safety of walking, bicycling and transit modes,
particularly for children, people with disabilities, older adults, low income
populations, and all communities.
Seminar Series:
• The TRCLC Seminar Series brings leading local, national and international
researchers to a public forum at the TRCLC to speak about the latest advances in
transportation.
• The Series helps advance the TRCLC's workforce development and technology
transfer objectives by giving students, professionals and researchers an opportunity to
hear from and interact with experts in their fields.
• The Seminar Series is free and open to the public.
