Welcome Message

The International Geosynthetics Society-Thailand Chapter (IGS-Thailand), the Asian

Center of Soil Improvement and Geosynthetics (ACSIG) at AIT and the Suranaree

University of Technology (SUT) under the auspices of the International Geosynthetics

Society (IGS), jointly organized the Fifth Asian Regional Conference on Geosynthetics

of Geosynthetics Asia 2012 (GA2012) with the theme of “Geosynthetics for Sustainable

Adaptation to Climate Change” on 13 to 15 December 2012 at the Centara Grand at

Central Plaza Ladprao, Bangkok, Thailand.

The aim of GA2012 is to bring together geosynthetics researchers, consultants,

owners, manufacturers, distributors, project regulators, contractors, and academics in

order to share their knowledge, update information, advance technologies, and discuss

recent developments on the following general topics:

(1) PVDs and Drainage (4) Natural Fibers and Innovation

(2) Erosion Control (5) Reinforcement

(3) Barrier and Environmental (6) Case Histories

The GA2012 has been honored and benefited to have 6 Keynote Lectures and 6

Theme Lectures delivered by well-known geotechnical experts and world class

academics. The conference proceedings contains 129 papers contributed by authors from

25 countries including 6 Keynote Lectures, 6 Theme Lectures, 2 Country Reports, 107

Technical Papers and 8 Student Papers. All abstracts and full papers have been peer-

reviewed prior to their acceptance and inclusion in the proceedings. We wish to

acknowledge the assistance of the members of the Technical Committee in reviewing and

maintaining high standards on the quality of the papers.

Utmost appreciations are given to the members of the Conference Local and

International Committee for their unfailing support. We also acknowledged the

Conference Sponsors and Exhibitors for their financial supports as well as heart fully

thank the support given by the IGS Officers, IGS Council Members, and IGS Technical

Committees. Above all, the Organizing Committee of Geosynthetics Asia 2012 greatly

appreciates the support given by the Keynote, Theme and Technical Lecturers as well as

the Session Chairs and Co-Chairs for their valuable assistances.

Introduction

The International Geosynthetics Soceity - Thailand Chapter (IGS-Thailand), Asian

Center for Soil Improvement and Geosynthetics (ACSIG), and Suranaree University of

Technology (SUT), under the auspices of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS),

jointly organizes the Fifth Asian Regional Conference on Geosynthetics or GeoAsia 2012

(GA2012), to be held from 13 to 16 December 2012 at Centara Grand at Central Plaza

Ladprao Bangkok, Thailand. The theme of the GA2012 conference is “ Geosynthetics for

Sustainable Adaptation to Climate Change”.

The effect of climate change including global warming is not only limited in causing

landslide disasters but also in increasing the frequency of occurrence of a variety of

natural disasters. The intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) reported that

residences of many more millions of people are projected to be flooded every year

through the 2080s because of rising sea level. Among at risk are low-lying and densely

populated areas. Moreover, recent news items have identified that insurance companies

are blaming bad weather slashing down their profit forecasts by millions of dollars.

Consequently, these insurance companies have been forced to raise the insurance

premium to recoup their losses. The recent devastating floods in Thailand are a concrete

example of climate change consequences.
