It is time to say goodbye to my teacher and all my friends.
Learning and excitement will have to wait this school year now has to end.
But in two months,
after the summer ends, I will see them all again.
Graduation Surprise!.
By: Loli Biernat
It was the day of my graduation and I was
trembling like crazy. For a lot of reasons. Many
thoughts were going through my head. Like, how I
would be leaving elementary school in just a matter
of hours and how all my friends would be going to
different middle schools. I have no idea how in the
world I survived this when I was in Kindergarten
without trembling my head off. Slowly, they started
calling the names of my classmates. As they were
about to read my name, the lights turned off. I
turned my head toward where the parents were
sitting. Suddenly, everyone was screaming,
shouting, and bumping into me because nobody
could see anything. There was a small spark that I
assumed was a fire, and I started to freak out.
Where were my parents? Where was... anything?
My eyes started to blur. Then I was falling...
falling... and I was back on my chair. Was it just my
nerves? The lights came back on and everything
was back to normal! Finally, they called my name. I
stood up, walked to the stage, and... I started
crying. I could not believe I was actually
graduating, and leaving all my friends behind. My
teacher brought me a basket full of flowers and
chocolates that was meant for her. She wanted me
to have it, because she wasn't leaving the school. It
was certainly a graduation surprise I would have
never dreamed of.
5th Graders are headed to
Middle School! By: Jewel Walden
For my final issue as a reporter of the
Dragons’ Tale, I decided to do some detective
work. I was curious to know where all my
classmates would be next year so I put on my
detective hat. I asked EVERY 5th grader to tell
me what school they will be attending next year.
At first I thought it would be impossible but I
did it! Here are my results:
.
..
The newspaper staff
would like to wish all of
our amazing 5th graders
lots of luck in middle
school next year!
We will miss you all!!

Great Summer Vacation Spots! By: Marcos Rodriguez
Well students, it seems that summer is getting closer by the minute. What does this mean? It means it’s time for great summer vacations! Like…
Rapids
. Located 2 - 3 hours away from Miami,
Rapids Water Park located in West Palm Beach is
jammed with 30 acres of fun in the sun. Some of
the 35 waterslides include Big Thunder, the
largest water ride in Florida! Or, try one of the
water park’s newest addition, Rapids Racer! It’s
the new high-speed competition ride with a head-
first dive, radical dips, and sharp turns. The
whole family will enjoy the 25,000 square foot
wave pool that shoots waves up to 6 feet! And for
something more thrilling, try Riptide Raftin’,
where you get to experience 500 feet of twists,
turns and banks - through raging white water
and three water walls! Kids can ride the 1950
Hershell Carousel, and toddlers can enjoy the
Tadpool. Named one of the best water parks in
South Florida.
Casa Ybel Resort Sanibel Island
Sanibel Island is an interesting place.
It’s associated with Calusa Indians. Sanibel
was discovered by Ponce De Leon in 1513. A
legend about a 19th century pirate called
Jose Gaspar said that he buried
stolen treasure on Santa Isybella
Island (Sanibel). Sanibel Island is a
natural beauty with hundreds of
acres of protected nature and wildlife
preserves. It’s also home to the legendary Casa
Ybel resort. Stepping onto the resort is like
finding paradise. Explore the gulf-side
swimming pool, relax in the 14 mi
of white sandy beach, satisfy your
hunger with the Coconuts Poolside
Café and Bar, or spend an afternoon jet-skiing,
parasailing, windsurfing, or kayaking. It’s also
a great place to add some shells to your
collection. Conde Nast Traveler named Casa
Ybel resort one of the “Best places to stay in the
world.” You’ll have to stay here to believe it.
.
Have a great summer vacation!

June 21st is the first official
day of summer.
June was named after Juno,
Jupiter’s wife, a Roman god.
July was named by Marc Anthony in honor of
Julius Caesar.
Summer is the rainiest season out of all four.
September 20 is the last day of summer. For a
whole 24 hours, there is no season. September 21
is when autumn begins.
A day isn’t really 24 hours. It is believed that a
full day is 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 13 seconds,
to be exact. It would take 3 minutes and forty
seven seconds for it to be 24 hours.

How does A.R. help you? AR helps your reading comprehension. It
motivates you to become a better reader by reading
more books. The more A.R. books you read, the more
A.R. points you get. The more points you earn, the more
prizes you earn. Plus, A.R. makes reading tons of fun.
Top A.R. students
Have you ever wondered which students have
had the most A.R. points during the school year? Next
year it could be you!
.
How can you be a top reader? The best way to become a top reader is to find
books that interest you. Look for a great series that you
like and challenge yourself to read the whole series. If
you read at least 30 minutes
every day, not only will you
have the chance to see
your name on this list
but you will become an
awesome reader and
writer!
Good Luck!
Great Summer Reads! You can get a head start on the next school year by reading lots of books during our summer break! Here are some great books to read this summer:

Dinosaurs are reptiles that lived millions of
years and died out when the earth was hit by a
meteor. Some dinosaurs survived and evolved into
today’s birds. The biggest dinosaur Amphicoelias
came in at a whopping 168 tons and 197 feet long,
even bigger than a blue whale. Scientists were able
to calculate its size
based on a single
bone.
The largest carnivorous dinosaur was
Spinosaurus which was 60 feet long and 10-20 tons.
It is my favorite dinosaur and for a good reason. It
had the ability to kill a T-rex, even
though they lived in different
places. Tyrannosaurus
Rex, or T-rex for short, means
tyrant lizard king. It was given this
name because it was the largest carnivorous dino at
the time it was found. Since then many other
carnivorous dinosaurs have been found to be
larger. If T-rex had a rival it would be Triceratops
which means three-horned face. It had three long
pointed horns that could pack a punch.
The era in which the dinosaurs lived in was
the Mesozoic Era, which was divided into three
smaller eras. The first era was the Triassic; the
second was the Jurassic and last but not least the
Cretaceous.
The smartest dinosaurs were the raptors.
These animals were pack hunters and they teamed
up to kill prey. They can strangely take
down prey extremely larger than
themselves. The smartest of the
raptors and dinosaurs alike
was Troodon. It still
wasn’t very smart.
They were very fast and hostile.
The most famous of the raptors was the
Velociraptor. It was the fastest raptor, almost as fast
as the ostrich dinosaurs which can reach speeds of
up to 50 miles per hour. Velociraptor even has the
word velocity in its name. Raptors, however were
not the only pack dinosaurs.
Allosaurus was a large 40 foot long beast
that hunted in duos. Like T-rex,
it had a huge rival with tons
of defenses, Stegosaurus. It had a
spiked tail and plates running
along its back, not making it a
very tasty meal. But the master
of defenses was Ankylosaurus.
Like Stegosaurus it had bony plates. But instead the
plates were laid upon its back and more deep in the
skin. It had spikes all over its body. But its
best defense was the clubbed tail
with the club at the tip
made of 100% pure bone.
The link between dinosaurs and birds was
Archeopteryx. It bird features like flying and
feathers but had teeth, scales, and a tail too. Other
reptiles were alongside dinosaurs. They flew,
swam, or walked. The most common are
the flying and swimming reptiles.
The flying ones were
called Pterosaurs and the
swimming ones included Plesiosaurs,
Ichthyosaurs, and Mosasaurs.
There is a lot of information that has been
discovered about these prehistoric creatures but
there is still so much to be found. Scientists that
study dinosaurs are called paleontologists. What a
cool job!

The Miami Marlins began playing in the 1993
Major League Baseball season as the Florida Marlins.
Since their first game played in South Florida, they
played at Sun Life Stadium, which by the way, they
shared with the Miami Dolphins of the American
Football League. This year was an important year in
Marlins history because they changed their name to
Miami Marlins and played their first game in their very
own Marlins Park. It was built in the city of Miami and
took about three years to build.
The Miami Marlins celebrated opening day at
their new ballpark on April 4, 2012 against the St. Louis
Cardinals.
As part of my research, my family and I decided to visit
the new stadium to get to know
it better. After visiting the
stadium, I can confirm that this
new ballpark has very nice
features, such as, an indoor pool
next to a restaurant, a
retractable roof and outfield
glass panels among others. We
can feel very proud that Miami
has a baseball team with a very
nice brand new baseball park.
Go Marlins!!!!!

One of my favorite things about Doral Academy is
the end-of-year show that Mrs. Wheeler puts on with
the fifth graders. I thought it would be great to get the
inside scoop on this year’s show. On my way to sit
down with Ms. Wheeler, my palms started to get
sweaty. “I hope I don’t freak out!” I thought. Then I sat
down and started my interview.
Andrea: What year was the first play in Doral Academy
and whose idea was it?
Ms. Wheeler: The first show was Annie, in 2004. I had
always done an End of the Year show in
England so I asked Ms. Gomez (our former
principal) and she said yes.
Andrea: Why did you decide to do the play about
the movie Grease?
Ms. Wheeler: Many people don’t know this but Grease,
originally, was a musical. The movie was
based on the play.
Andrea: Who is the person in charge of casting for
the show?
Ms. Wheeler: Ms. Menendez, Ms. J. Alvarez, and I. I’m
actually tone-deaf so I rely on them to tell
me who the best singers are. This year, I
also had help from the voyager teachers,
Ms. Sanchez and Ms. Hernandez.
Andrea: About how many students are participating
in the play this year?
Ms. Wheeler: This year we have about 80 students.
Andrea: Who are the main characters?
Ms. Wheeler: Alexander Rodriguez is Danny, Florencia
Perey is Sandy, Thomas Savatosky is Sonny, Giuliana
Espitia is Marty, Joshua Perez is Kenickie, Annabelle
Ambrogi is Rizzo, Pedro Contipelli is Doody, Isabella
Ojeda is Frenchy, Kevin Busto is Roger, and Rebecca
Camejo is Jan.
Andrea: Sounds great! I can’t wait to see the show!
Thank you for your time.

It was a balmy spring morning, the flowers
vivid with color and the trees full with life when this
horrible nightmare happened. "Okay students ready
for the big announcement?" Ms. Swan asked. "Yeah!
We're ready!" Responded the whole class. “Tomorrow
is bring your pet to class day! You may bring your pet
and after lunch each one of you is going to introduce
your pet to the rest of the class!"
"Missy! Let's get that ribbon on you and into
your cage, it's time for school!
I, Victoria MacIntosh, demanded.
Meowwww!!! Once I gently
arranged Missy's red silky
ribbon around her neck, I set
her in her pink jewel-crusted
cage. Off to school with my white Siamese, Persian
cat.
When I arrived at my classroom the odor of a
farm suddenly came to mind. Woooof! Wooooof!
Chirpp! “As you all know today is bring your pet to
class day, but I suggest that we start the
presentations a little earlier than planned since all of
you are so excited!" Ms. Swan declared. My eyes
bulged out, and I started sweating. Missy, you better
behave! I thought. "All right! We'll start with...........
"Not me! Not me!" I whispered. "We'll start with
Victoria! Come up to the front of the class please and
present your pet.” Ms. Swan exclaimed. As I came up
to the front of the class, I pondered on what might
happen with Missy. Will she run away from me while I
present? Will she attack anyone? Or worse of all ...will
she start chasing the other pets? The thought of her
chasing the other pets gave
me a horrid headache
that I could barely stand!
" Umm okay... Hi everyone, this is messy here- I
MEAN MISSY not Messy!!!" Instantly the whole class
had started to laugh their heads off and a flush of
embarrassment came to my cheeks. "Missy here is a
white Siamese, Persian mix and she cherishes her
yarn like a bunny loves their carrots. Her pet peeves
include taking baths and hanging around do-
MEOOOW!!!!!
I knew at that moment
that she had eyed the bird
perching on it's stand. CHIIRP!
CHIRPP! She immediately went
after it. Suddenly, a golden retriever
went after Missy and the whole
classroom turned into a disaster.
Everyone started to shriek and the owners of
the golden retriever and the bird started to chase their
own pets. "Missy STOP!! Get over here!" I yelped.
Apparently that did not work out so well because she
had crashed into vase along with the dog and
destroyed everything in its path like a tornado. Finally
one of the owners of a fish in a blue shirt and a denim
jacket grabbed my insane cat and handed it over to
me.
"Thank you for stoping my cat."
"No problem." He replied. As soon as he
handed over my cat, all the other animals stopped
running around. "Victoria! Put that cat of yours back in
it's cage! We will continue our presentations but
everyone make sure that your animals are in their
cages PLEASE!! Ms. Swan said angrily.
After the presentation were over I was able to
relax. I was furious at Missy for doing this, although I
was not surprised. The truth is her name is Messy not
Missy. I figured Missy was a for more elegant name
for school. I thought I could keep her crazy personality
a secret but I obviously couldn’t. Meow? I know she
felt that I was mad at her but I stayed as cool as a
cucumber and replied:
. "I still love you Messy. Don’t ever do that again!"

All the brave dragons did not fear the dreaded
FCAT! All 3rd
, 4th
, and 5th
graders had an FCAT pep
rally to get motivated for the big test and we had an
amazing time!
Here’s what happened:
We walked in with funky crazy props that
matched our grade color. 3rd
grade was red , 4th
grade
was white , and 5th
grade was blue! First, we
performed out FCAT chants, kind of like a parody
for FCAT. We made up songs and changed the
lyrics to match the FCAT. 3rd
grade's song was based
on “Party Rock Anthem”, 4th
grade's was “Good
Feeling” , and 5th
grade was “Greased Lighting.” It
was so fun listening to all of the chants! But there was
a surprise chant that EVERYONE loved. A chant
that our amazing teachers & staff made to give us a
laugh before the FCAT. They even made a hilarious
video that featured the office staff and the special area
teachers. It cracked everyone up! After listening to all
the chants, we received our prizes. 3rd
grade won the
award for best chant, 4th
grade got the award for
having the most encouraging signs, banners and
props, and 5th
grade got the award for showing the
most school spirit! Everyone did an amazing job!!
We even had a dance party after that, and the
music just made everyone get up and dance! All the
songs we loved were playing! Finally, Mrs. Cuesta and
Mrs. Simon assured us that FCAT is a piece of cake
and everyone was prepared and ready to pass it. To
me, this was the most touching part of the whole
FCAT pep rally. For me, the FCAT pep rally was
something that took out all the stress! I honestly was
so thankful for our teachers & staff for putting this on
for us, because I know some schools don't even have
a FCAT pep rally. I want to thank everyone who put
this FCAT pep rally together for us .
Thank you!!!
Our parents are always there for us
throughout the school year and sometimes
we forget to give thanks. They love us,
support us and motivate us so I think it’s
time for us to do something nice for them.
Here are a few ideas for fun ways to show
our parents that we appreciate them.
A few special ways to say:
. By: Cosette Martinez
Make a delicious breakfast in bed.
Sing a lovely song that they like or write
a song about them.
Go on a hiking trip or go camping for the
weekend.
Paint a beautiful family portrait with all
the members of your family.
Buy him a big cake with lots of chocolate.
Give them lots of hugs and kisses.
Write them a thank-you letter or make
your own thank-you card.
Write a poem about your family.
Have a talk with your siblings and give
your parents a peaceful day at the
house.
Clean your room without them reminding
you.
Create a collage of your favorite family
memories.
Bake cookies or cupcakes. (ask an adult for help)
