2. Which was easy left or right ?

3. Why was it easier with right hand and difficult with other hand (vice versa)?

Obviously if they are right handed they will say right hand and if they are left handed they willsay left hand.

We are more comfortable with a particular hand because we are habituated to write with that hand.

So what is habit?Habit is an acquired pattern of behavior that often occurs automatically.

2. An act done repeatedly, sometimes unconsciously (such as a eye blinking

and throat clearing ), sometimes for leisure (such as a hobby)3. Habits are automatic routines of behavior that are repeated regularly,

without thinking.

• In the same way if we develop a habit of studying it will be easier to follow it and wecan easily follow it.

What's a Habit?

A habit is a pattern of behavior that's repeated, and the person usually isn't even aware of his habit.

Activity3 : Story about Rahul

Time: 20 min.

Material required: None.

Objective :

• importance of studying

• Importance of study habit

Who Did Rahul's Homework?

Once upon a time in a small village lived Rahul who was very

mischievous and he was never serious about his study. Rahul

never did homework. He used to get 40% to 50% in exams

"Too boring," he said. He played cricket and basketball and

hockey instead. His teachers told him, "Rahul! Do your

homework or you won’t learn a thing." And it's true;

sometimes he did feel like a ding-a-ling. But what could he

do? He hated homework. Then on Christmas Day his cat was

playing with a little doll and he grabbed it away. To his

surprise it wasn't a doll at all, but a man of the tiniest size. Hehad a little wool shirt with old fashioned britches and a high tall hat

much like a witch's. He yelled, "Save me! Don't give me

back to that cat. I'll grant you a wish, I promise you that."

Rahul couldn't believe how lucky he was! Here was the answer to all of his

problems. So he said, "Only if you do all my homework 'til the end of thesemester, that's 35 days. If you do a good enough job, I could even get A's."

The little man's face wrinkled like a dishcloth thrown in the hamper. He

kicked his legs and doubled his fists and he grimaced and scowled and pursed

his lips, "Oh, am I cursed! But I'll do it."

And true to his word, that little man began to do Rahul's homework. Except

there was one glitch. The little man didn't always know what to do and he

needed help. "Help me! Help me!" he'd say. And Rahul would have to help --

in whatever way.

"I don't know this word," the little man squeeked while reading Rahul's homework.

"Get me a dictionary. No, what's even better. Look up the word and sound it out by each

letter."

When it came to math, Rahul was out of luck. "What are times tables?" the little man

shrieked. "We elves never need that. And addition and subtraction and division and

fractions? Here, sit down beside me, you simply must guide me."

Elves know nothing of human history, to them it's a mystery. So the little little man, already

a shouter, just got louder "Go to the library, I need books. More and more books. And you

can help me read them too."

As a matter of fact every day in every way that little little man was a nag! Rahul was

working harder than ever and was it a drag! He was staying up nights, had never felt so

weary, was going to school with his eyes puffed and bleary. Finally the last day of school

arrived and the little man was free to go. As for homework, there was no more, so he quietly

and slyly slipped out the back door.

Rahul got his A's; his classmates were amazed; his teachers smiled and were full of praise.

And his parents? They wondered what had happened to Rahul. He himself wondered , he

realized that study is not really bad, we can make easier by daily practice, we can learn new

things and new skills if we make it habituated . He was now the model kid. Cleaned his room, did his chores, was cheerful, never rude, like he had developed a whole new attitude.

You see, in the end Rahul still thought he'd made that tiny man do all his homework. It

wasn't the little man; Rahul had done it himself!

Day 3:Recap: 10 min

So in last session what are the things we have learned?

On the first day we have seen what are habits and why is it important to form habits:

Reasons:

elicit from them

• Helps us gain knowledge and use it effectively

• Enhances our ability to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses in studies

• Helps us get better marks

• Helps us to Learn new techniques and methods of enhancing memory and concentration

• Helps utilize our time very well• Helps us to develop motivation towards study

After that we saw how effective study habits will help us to become better at studies (connect to

homework)

Only having good study habits is not enough but we also need to learn some study

techniques to study fast and effectively.

So today we are going to learn various study techniques which will help us remember our

study material better.

Now let’s look at some things we need to remember when studying… Let’s do some activities ….

Activity:SQ3R

Time: 20min

Material :

Objective:

• Helps us to Learn new techniques and methods of enhancing memory and concentration

Procedure :

Discuss these techniques with students

SQ3R

Increasing Your Retention of Written Information

SQ3R is a useful technique for fully absorbing written information. It helps you to create a

good mental framework of a subject, into which you can fit facts correctly. It helps you to set studygoals. It also helps you to use the review techniques that will help to fix information in your mind.

By using SQ3R to actively read a document, you can get the maximum benefit from your reading

time.

How to Use the Tool:

The acronym SQ3R stands for the five chronological techniques you should use to read a book:We have selected 3 paragraph from subject History . Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review is

what SQ3R stands for. It is an awesome activity to get students involved with stories' vocabularyand concepts to increase comprehension. It is especially effective with expository text, because it

provides a step-by-step method that ensure multiple exposures to the material being learned. Each

step is explained in the following list:

Survey –

• To survey a chapter in a textbook, students read and think about the title, headings and

subheadings, captions under pictures, vocabulary in bold print, side entries on pages (if there are any), and the summary.

• For e.g take lesson 1 and show them.

• Get an idea of what the chapter is about by reviewing the highlights:• Read the title, headings, and subheadings.

• Take note of words that are bold.

• Look at charts, graphs, pictures, maps, and other visual material.

• Read captions.

• Read the very beginning and end of the chapter.

Question –

• As you survey the text, ask a question for each section. Ask what, why, how, when, who

and where questions as they relate to the content. Here's how you can create questions:

• Turn the title, headings, or subheadings into questions.

• Rewrite the questions at the end of the chapter or after each subheading in your own

words.

• Write down your questions.

• Questions help you to pay attention, understand the text better, and recall the information

more easily later on.

Read –

• The third step is for students to read actively, looking for answers to their questions.

• They should also attend to boldface type, charts, graphs, and any other comprehension aid provided.

• Read one section of a chapter at a time, actively looking for an answer to your question for that section.

• Pay attention to bold text that authors use to make important points.

8/3/2019 5th Study Habit

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/5th-study-habit 12/17

India’s Premier Career Guidance Company

• Be sure to review everything in the section, including tables, graphs, and illustrations, as

these features can communicate an idea more powerfully than written text.• Read as loud as possible at home.

Recite –

• Once the material has been read and questions answered fully, the students should testthemselves on the material.

• Anything difficult to remember should be rehearsed aloud or recited.

• This multisensory experience helps the difficult material to move into short-term, and with practice, long-term, memory.

• At the end of each section, look up from the text and in your own words recite an answer to

your question for that section.

• Then write down your answer. Be sure to provide examples that support it.

•  Now repeat the Question, Read, and Recite steps for each section of the chapter or assignedreading. First ask a question for the next section.

• Then read to find the answer. Finally, recite the answer in your own words and jot it down.

• The written questions and answers will help you study in the future.

Review –

The final step is to review the information learned periodically.

This can be done orally with a peer, through rewriting notes from memory and

comparing to the students' master set of notes, or with mock quizzes developed by a

 peer or the teacher.

After completing each chapter or reading assignment, review your notes.

Identify the main points of the reading by looking for the most important idea in

each section. Recite, or write, a brief summary of the chapter or assignment.

Review your study notes every week to help you remember the information. When

it's time to study for your tests, you'll find you've created an invaluable guide.

Key Points:

SQ3R is a useful technique for extracting the maximum amount of benefit from your reading time.

It helps you to organize the structure of a subject in your mind. It also helps you to set study goalsand to separate important information from irrelevant data.

SQ3R is a five-stage active reading technique.

• Helps us get better marks.

Activity 8 : Importance of taking breaks while studying.

Time: 15min.

Procedure: stretch activity

Process:

• The trainer asks students to bend down and stay in the bending position for long

time without moving even a bit.

• Ask them how does it feel to remain in a position for too long time? (Expected Answers

will be tired, painful, boring etc.).

• Repeat this activity with at least two/three positions. (Look up as much up as you can andstay steady like that, keep you hands up in the sky and stay steady.)

Debrief: • How was it?

• How do you feel now?

• When you begin with any activity, you are full of energy to work and even enjoy doing that

work.

• However, if you continue an activity for a long time you feel tired and exhausted, you feel

like changing your position and taking break.

• Similarly when you study for long time without break, your brain gets tired and you can’t pay attention to your studies.

• The speed also slows down. Hence, it is very important to give some rest to your brain

when you study.• It makes learning easier and more effective.

• Research says that, you can have qualitative study only for 40 minutes; beyond which you

have quantitative studies.

• Therefore you need to take 10 minutes break. During this 10 minutes break, listen to

music , go out for a stroll, talk with parents etc besides watching T.V. or computer games

which you can do later but not during the study breaks.

Homework :

• Worksheet on SQ3R

3. Choose a study area free from distractions. Studying smart requires concentration so

encourage yourself to eliminate distractions such as telephones, television and loud music.

4. Review the day’s work. This enables you to recall what was done and plan ahead.

5. Allot time for each task. Set aside short periods for study that require you to concentrate better

and reduce the chance of boredom.

6. Complete one assignment or task at a time. This will help you to complete easier tasks firstthat will allow time for the harder ones. This also helps prevent the feeling of being overwhelmed

with work.

7. Take regular short breaks to renew energy. The habit of taking a break helps productivity, but a break should last no more than five minutes.

8. Review completed work periodically. Check over the work you have done to check for errorsand omissions.

9. Review each subject periodically so that you stay on top of concepts taught. Allocate a

subject a day to review for five or ten minutes each day.

10. Ask for help if needed. Successful students have a habit of using the help and assistance thatteachers and other adults offer.
