Padre’s Pen ~Fifth Sunday of Easter

Christ is Risen, Alleluia! And it looks like soon there will be some opening in our ability to gather as a parish community.

That ability to gather will look different from what we normally expect. So, here are some updates on what we are planning and where we are going:

Public Celebration of Mass ~ According to the Archbishop’s letter from last week, we are to make plans for a limited reopening starting about May 18th (contingent upon many factors, but at least we have a general date to which we can look). If that happens, we look to start public Mass in all our churches on the weekend of the 23rd and 24th, but we will only be allowed to have about 1/3 capacity. So, we may have people in every 3rd pew and there will be additional protocols for sanitizing, distance, Holy Communion, etc. We are currently working on a plan how to implement this and get people back into our churches. More information will be forthcoming.

Capital Campaign ~ We are currently on a pause but are working out the logistics on when and how to best move forward. Our campaign committee had a virtual meeting last Monday and you can expect more communication in the next couple weeks on our way forward.

Golf Tournament and Pot-O-Gold Raffle ~ The Golf Tournament and Raffle drawing have been moved out to July 10th to accommodate the stop in operations we have undergone these past couple months. You can still get Raffle tickets from the School, Fr. Theisen, and other representatives with tickets. Watch the bulletin and our Principal Kim Doyle’s weekly updates for more information.

St. Wenceslaus Festival ~ Our Top Six Committee is working hard to prepare for our annual festival amid the great uncertainties of where we will be by August regarding social distancing. I met with them last week via Zoom, and we are planning a festival for the year with the knowledge that it may have to look a little different than to what we normally see. Keep an eye on the bulletin for more information.

As life in the parish moves forward during this slow re-opening of our city and state, we will need patience, volunteer help, andcontinued prayers to make it happen in the safest way possible and keep us moving forward as committed followers of Jesus Christ.

Ad Christum per Mariam,

Fr. Theisen

FISH Partner NetworkToday we will talk with MaryCarol Wolf, the Pastoral Ministry Associate for Saint Wenceslaus Parish.

Hi MaryCarol, I know as a parish we are involved in a ministry called FISH. Can you please tell us what FISH stands for and what it does?FISH stands for Families & Individuals Sharing Hope. This network was formed in Scott County, and their mission is to have organizations partner together to meet human needs so that individuals will be able to live healthy, transformed lives. The FISH network consists of representatives of the Faith Community, local government and board of education, service organizations and non-profits, and Scott County businesses. Together the FISH Partner Network then has the capacity to assist families and individuals in crisis and connect them with their needs.

What does it mean for our parish to be involved in this ministry? A posted FISH need can be responded to either individually or as a parish. Our parish responds to local FISH needs using funds from our annual Thanksgiving Collection. These needs tend to be for assistance with rent or utility bills, medical bills, or car repairs. The people we help are in a financial crisis due to losing a job/mental health issues/unforeseen bills, etc.

Also, when a need is brought to the parish, if we don’t have the funding or resources to fulfill the need at that time, we can post the need on the FISH network website. To post a need on FISH, we tell a story of the need with pertinent details of the circumstance, give a description of measures taken to overcome their obstacles, and have a plan for the need which will help their transition. We then wait for responses from the FISH Partner Network to help us fulfill the need in the community. Whenever a need is posted through the network, we receive an email, so we also check to see if we can step in and help with those needs as well.

What are the types of needs most often requested? Most needs are transitional in nature but can really help in a crisis to greatly improve the circumstance and help the family or individual move on during a difficult time. Common needs: Children, Clothing and Personal Needs, Disability and Domestic Issues, Employment, Food, Furniture and Household, Legal, Housing, Medical, Mental Health, Mortgage/Rent, Safety, Senior, Substance Abuse/Recovery, Transportation/Vehicle Repair, Utilities.Continued on Page 4...

5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 10, 2020

PARISH AND AREA NEWS

Continued from Page 3...

A couple of FISH Success Stories:*A mother of two was left with a house with serious struc-tural issues and disrepair ~ windows and doors that had water damage as well as the entire gutter system. The woman has found a job; but it does not offer the income necessary to afford these repairs. She went to her church for help, and they posted her need on the FISH network. The amount needed for construction project was approxi-mately $1000. Within 2 days, FISH partners had donated the labor and $760 for the supplies. Over 40 people vol-unteered to help and the woman and her children were relieved!

*A father of school-aged kids has been out of work for 6 months due to health issues. Still working to pay off bills from previous health care, he went to the school counsel-or and explained that he is struggling to catch up on util-ity and other bills. As a result, his kids had no computer at home on which to complete their homework. The coun-selor, a FISH partner, posted their need of a computer in good condition for the children to use for their school-work. A FISH partner was able to provide this family with two refurbished laptop computers.

Have you noticed a change in needs, responses, or ways that FISH is operating during this time of shel-tering at home? One of the changes is the FISH needs are more agency related right now. Some recent examples are the CAP Agency needed money to fund their “Cereal for Summer Campaign”, Second Harvest Foods needed money to fund their increased level of operations, Catholic Charities needed facemasks, and a hospital needed prayer shawls for patients and families. We as a parish were able to help a little with each of these needs.

I feel that individual needs will be increasing as people are unable to work and the necessities of life are not af-fordable. Domestic/Substance abuse, and mental health issues may come to play during this time of COVID also.

If someone thinks they may qualify for a FISH re-quest, who would they contact? They may contact MaryCarol Wolf at the parish office,952-758-3225, or email at [email protected].

If someone wants to get involved with helping others through FISH, how do they do that? You may register as a partner on the FISH website,http://www.fishpartnernetwork.org/ or you could let us know at the parish how your business or organization can help serve the community. You may also donate to FISH, http://www.fishpartnernetwork.org/. FISH is a reg-istered 501 © (3), non-profit organization and relies upon the generous donations from its partners and supporters, like you. All contributions that are made directly to sup-

port FISH are fully tax deductible. All contributors will receive a donation receipt for your tax filing purposes.

And finally, is there anything else we should know about this ministry? This is a great ministry helping those in need and work-ing in collaboration with partners in all of Scott County has made it very successful. Our goal in the near future at St. Wenceslaus is to have a main hub here in New Prague, to serve the community with the local businesses partnering to help. Something to think about is, “Does your business have the ability to help the community by offering a free or reduced rate to those in need during a crisis?” If so, please let us know how you can help serve. Thank you to all those who have shown your continued support.

FAITH FORMATION ANDYOUTH MINISTRY

Confirmation UpdateWell, here we are in a place no one ever thought we would be. I am praying all our families will

get through this as best we can. It is a stressful and trau-

matic time. Hopefully your faith will aid and comfort you and yours right now. I was so looking forward to our summer Confirmation program! During the summer months, we will cover lessons 1-12 of our program Cho-sen. Now that we are planning on a home program here are some guidelines:

Lessons and the workbook will be available for pickup beginning Mon., May 11th, in the vestibule of the west entrance to St. Wenceslaus. Doors will be open Monday-Friday, noon to 4 pm. They will be labeled and arranged alphabetically. Each lesson will have room to write and respond to questions/reflections from the workbook and videos. These lessons are designed to be done with a parent/guardian not solo. I am sure you will enjoy this faith building opportunity! Don't do the lessons all at once! This program builds on itself; time between les-sons allows for thoughtful reflection and growth. If you have any questions, please contact Pamela Sherlock [email protected] or 952-758-0477. Please register here: https://npcatholic.org/summercon-firmation-registration

For those who have completed their Confirmation preparation (9th and 10th grades), we are moving forward towards a date!

With relaxing of the MN Stay-at-Home order and soft re-opening of churches at the end of the month, we are plan-ning for your candidate's Confirmation. What it will look like is still in planning, as limits/numbers/guidelines are changing daily. If you have any questions, please contact Pamela Sherlock (contact information above).

SCHOOL NEWS from SWS

Become part of our family! ~ The SWS Fam-ily! We invite anyone with children in pre-school to grade 8 to join our school fam-ily next fall. In our recent survey, parents

expressed that one outstanding quality of sending their children to our Catholic school is the fact that the entire family becomes involved in the school life. This is a place where people of similar religious beliefs join together. This is a place where virtues are taught, and we can prac-tice what we learn with each other ~ both young and older alike. This is a place that our families call home! Join us. Although tours cannot be taken at this time, you can begin to talk about this possibility with our school principal, Kim Doyle. Check it out and see if our school environment will be a good fit for your children and for you. [email protected] / 952-758-3133

St. Wenceslaus School Tuition Transfer Grant $1,000 tuition transfer grant for the 2020-21 school year available to all transfer students enrolling in Grades 1-8. Please contact Kim Doyle at 952-758-3133 [email protected] for details.
