Musicians inspiredto give back

Current and former NorthHaven High School musi-cians will perform at theTown Green on Tuesday,June 19, for a jazz concert tobenefit the NHHS band de-partment.

“This is to give back to[NHHS band director] KenTedeschi,” said 2010 NHHSgraduate and Hartt School ofMusic student Stephen Cu-sano, who organized the

event. “We’re raising moneyfor whatever he wants to useit for – band trips, to buy newinstruments for students,whatever he needs.”

“Mr. T. has made a very bigimpact in my life,” Cusanoadded. “He conveys a verystrong passion for music. Hesends the messages, loud andclear, that he cares about mu-sic, and that he cares aboutthe students.”

At the June 7 Board of Se-lectmen meeting, town lead-ers welcomed new business-es, spoke of potential busi-nesses yet to open, and ap-proved various appoint-ments to and resignationsfrom municipal boards andcommissions.

One new business inNorth Haven will provide aidto the disabled. Former WestHaven Mayor H. RichardBorer Jr. is now president ofthe new Easter Seals Disabil-ity Services and Goodwill,which just opened a locationat 432 Washington Ave.

“We have a fleet of vansthat we keep here at the

North Haven facility thatwill go out and pick up resi-dents. These are people withdevelopmental disabilities,and other types of barriersto work,” explained Borerduring the meeting. “Wepick up individuals, bringthem to the center in NorthHaven, and we would do jobtraining and create employ-ment opportunities.”

“We are looking forwardto being a good neighbor,”Borer added.

First Selectman MichaelFreda then shared some fi-nancial updates, reiteratingthat there would be no tax in-crease this year, with themill rate remaining at 26.54mills.

“We are looking to close

out this fiscal year with atleast a balanced budget andprobably in a surplus posi-tion,” Freda said. “It’s beenthe goal of this administra-tion to maintain a fund bal-ance at eight percent and totake any surplus dollars thatare derived through generat-ing efficiency throughoutthe course of the fiscal year,to take those efficiencies interms of dollar savings andgive those dollars back to thetaxpayers for future capitalexpenses.”

By successfully applying for a $50,000 grant, the Mon-towese Elementary School PTA playground committee isone step closer to replacing the building’s sparse, outdat-ed playgrounds.

In recent years, several local elementary schools haverebuilt their playgrounds due to existing recreation sitesbeing old, unsafe, insufficient and flood-prone. Mon-towese’s recess areas suffer from similar problems.

“We’ve gotten comments from parents who said thatwhen they went to school here as children, this was thesame equipment that they had,” said Michelle O’Brien,playground committee member. “It’s time for an update.”

While most people think ofarcades as being on board-walks or in malls, two NorthHaven businessmen havebrought gaming on the road.

Monster Mobile Arcade, amobile entertainment com-pany founded by Mark Allenand Tom Olajos, features full-size arcade games on the go,built into the back of a hugetrailer truck.

Just a few years ago, Ola-jos and Allen stumbled upon

an article about mobile busi-nesses that were doing welldespite the recession. Havingchildren of their own, thecreators developed an ideathat would later develop intoa full-fledged business opera-tion.

“Mark and I thought, ‘howgreat would it be to bring theparty to the person instead ofthe person to the party?’”said Olajos. “We both grewup with arcades and enjoygaming. We thought it wouldbe a more unique experienceto have a full-size arcade at

your doorstep with all thelights and sounds surround-ing you. That’s when Mon-ster Mobile Arcade wasborn.”

The mobile arcade catersto everything from birthdayparties and corporateevents, to engagement par-ties and weddings, providingan enclosed, climate-con-trolled arcade as an all-in-one experience.

“We have seen a new trendof businesses that are be-coming mobile and lean,”Olajos said. “People todaywant services brought tothem as opposed to going

out. It is more cost efficient,as well as easier on the cus-tomer. The customer canalso enjoy the comforts oftheir own home or business

without having to worryabout cleaning up after-wards.”

Take a stand for those in needsBy Paul Colella

At times weall need ahand to holdonto or some-one to standup for us.S o m e t i m e sthat helpinghand or cer-tain individ-ual comes to our assistancewhen we least expect it andwhen we need it the most.This story is intended toteach a lesson and remind usthat people do care, as repre-sented in the actions of anine-year-old little girl.

In a third grade class-room, there is a nine-year-old boy sitting at his desk.All of a sudden, there is apuddle between his feet andthe front of his pants is wet.He thinks his heart is goingto stop because he cannotpossibly imagine how thishas happened. It’s never hap-pened before, and he knowsthat when the boys find out

he will never hear the end ofit. When the girls find out,they’ll never speak to himagain as long as he lives.

The boy believes his heartis going to stop. He puts hishead down and begins topray silently. He is hopingfor a miracle that his unfor-tunate accident will go unno-ticed and he could escapefrom this embarrassing andawkward predicament.

When he looks up from hisprayer, he sees the teachercoming down the aisle with alook in her eyes that says hehas been discovered. As theteacher is walking towardhim, a classmate namedLizzie is carrying a goldfishbowl that is filled with water.Lizzie trips in front of theteacher and inexplicablydumps the bowl of water inthe boy’s lap. The boy pre-tends to be angry, but all thewhile is saying to himself,“Thank you! Thank you!”

Now, instead of being theobject of ridicule, the boy isthe object of sympathy. Theteacher rushes him down-

stairs to the nurse’s officeand gives him gym shorts toput on while his pants dryout. All the other childrenare on their hands and kneescleaning up around his desk.The sympathy is wonderful,but as life would have it, theridicule that should havebeen his has been trans-ferred to someone else —Lizzie.

When Lizzie tries to helpclean up the mess, her class-mates tell her to get out ofthe way. Some give her a dis-dainful look while others say,“You have done enough dam-age. Go away!”

Finally, at the end of theday, as they are waiting out-side for the bus, the boywalks over to Lizzie andwhispers, “You did that onpurpose, didn’t you? Thankyou!” Lizzie whispers back,“I wet my pants once too. Ihad wished someonedumped a fish bowl of waterin my lap. And you are wel-come.”

Like Lizzie, may we seethe opportunities that are al-

ways around us to do a gooddeed. And if we get thechance to lend a helpinghand may we do it with kind-ness and understanding. Re-member that just going tochurch doesn’t make you aChristian any more thanstanding in your garagemakes you a car. Each andevery one of us is goingthrough our own difficulttimes, or have experiencedhard times and heartache atone time or another, but wemust keep the faith, have de-termination, and never beafraid to help someone inneed. It will come back toyou tenfold and when youleast expect it. Life would begrand if we all had a “Lizzie”by our side.

Alex Johnson and FelishiaLaPointe, co-presidents ofthe North Haven High SchoolInteract Club, recently pro-vided the Rotary Club with areport of its activities for the2011-2012 school year.

The club’s major event forthe year was the hosting of a“Holiday Carnival” for thechildren in the Departmentof Children and Family Fos-ter and Adoption Care. Par-ticipants enjoyed an after-

noon filled with food, song,games, and a visit from San-ta who provided gifts for thechildren.

This event received a spe-cial proclamation from theGovernor, which the clubwill have framed and hung inan appropriate location atthe school.

Other activities included arecent “Senior Prom” at thecenter for the senior citizensin the town, which includedmusic, dancing and prom at-tire. Periodic pasta partiescontinued this year at thecenter, and a toy drive to ben-efit the Ronald McDonaldHouse in New Haven washeld. Their carnation sale al-lowed them to donate $400 to-ward the St. Baldrick’s Foun-

dation, which raisesmoney for children’scancer research.

They also ran carwashes to raise moneyfor various projectsduring the year. Up-coming events includ-ed assisting at the Spe-cial Olympics gamesJune 9-10, as well as acloser for the year, aparty at the home oftheir advisor, EllieMulligan. The majorproject being plannedfor next year is therestoration of theplayground atBlakeslee Park, in-cluding repairs to theconcession stand atGrover Wyman field.

The creators strive to ap-peal not only to children, butto adults as well.

“For the adults, this is areintroduction to gamesthey grew up on,” they said.“For all us 30- and 40-year-olds, we spent our after-noons at the arcades androller rinks. Back then, ar-cade games were a new formof entertain-ment. Mon-ster MobileArcade is away to relivethe past andenjoy thegames wemay have for-g o t t e nabout.”

As for thechildren, Ola-jos and Allencalled it “ahistory les-son to the mod-ern videogame.”

“Modern video games area multi-billion-dollar indus-try and it all started with thevideo arcade machine,” saidOlajos. “They may have nev-er played Pac-Man or SpaceEvaders. He was born in West Havenon Sept. 14, 1922 to the lateEthel Stevens MeyersBorkowski and William C.Meyers. He attended Ran-dolph Macon Military Acade-my in Front Royal, Virginia

and graduated from GeorgiaMilitary College in June,1942 with a BS degree. Heserved his country faithfullyin the U.S. Army Air Corpduring World War II in the9th Air Force FightersSquadron Hell Hawks and re-ceived six oak clusters forthe air offensive of Europe,Ardennes, Central Europe,Normandy, Northern Franceand the Rhineland from 1943– 1945. He was a member ofthe Hell Hawks 365th FighterGroup Association and wasawarded a certificate of Ap-preciation on September,2010 from the American War-rior Day of Honor. Williamwas a 50 year member of theCorinthian Lodge 103 ofNorth Haven and was a 32nddegree Mason. He was in theelectrical field from 1951 –1987. He was a member ofthe Local 90 InternationalBrotherhood of ElectricalWorkers and an ElectricalContractor before retiring in1987 as a Project Managerand Superintendent for sev-eral local electrical contrac-tors including DiamondElectrical Company, JohnsonElectrical Company and Ja-cobson Electric Company.

He was predeceased by hisfirst wife of 25 years ShirleyWoodruff Meyers; his sec-ond wife of 25 years MarionNolan Meyers; a brotherStevens Slade Meyers andsister Virginia MeyersHansell; he was the devotedfather of Garrett (Gary)Meyers and Karen MeyersO’Sullivan (Sonny) all ofFlorida; five grandchildren,Molly, Jesse, Patrick, Garrettand the late Brett all of Flori-da; five great-grandchildren,Hayden, Caleb, Taj, Alyssaand Mallory all of Florida.He is also survived by a step-son Sean (Bruce) Nolan of

thanks to the very hard-working, civic-orientedNorth Haven Garden Club.They spend an astronomicalnumber of work hours plan-ning, fundraising, planting,weeding and trimmingmany areas of the town foradded beauty and our aes-thetic pleasure. They tend tothe gardens on the parkinglot side of the town library,the center medians in sever-al roads, adding large urnswhere the strips are asphalt-ed, with American flags inthe summer season, and redbows during the wintermonths. Additionally, theyprepared the front of thePark and Recreation Depart-ment with red geraniums,for Memorial Day, window

boxes at the post office (sucha sad-looking building with-out the colorful placement),and I’ll bet more places ofwhich I am unaware.

I was also unaware untiltoday, of another gardenclub servicing our town. TheDaytimers Garden Clubbeautify the reading gardenat the town library, the“front” garden to south sideof the main entrances andhave enhanced the west sidecorners of the busy Clin-tonville Road/WashingtonAvenue intersection, at theLafin Highway Connector.

We, as a town, are benefi-ciaries of great gifts of tal-ent and generosity of heartand labor.

Dad, dandelions, DNA and destiny Commentary

Most of us have a favoritetool and mine is a little de-vice I call the pokey-weeder.It’s magnificently simple. Along handle like a shovel orrake might have with a two-tined fork on the end. Stick itinto the soil at a slight angleto the root system of a weed,a quarter turn and viola -you’ve made the extraction.

In my case, the target is al-ways a dandelion. I’ve easilydone 10,000 removals; that’swith no bending and no dirton my hands. Love mypokey-weeder, the ultimatelow-tech tool.

Sometime, around my2,000 or 3,000 dandelion kill, Iwas struck by my crazed,single-minded focus on thisaspect of lawn care; the dis-tain I feel for those whofreely yield their property tothe yellow plague. How I pullinto the driveway and imme-diately spot a neon yellow of-fender, shamelessly wavingabout on the far side of thehouse. Rather than rushing

to greet my family, includinga lonely mutt, I throw mywork bag down on the stepsgrab the pokey-weeder (al-ways at the ready by thefront door) and full-throttlehead towards my target.

And so I became aware ofmy dedication to this War onDandelions because it wasremarkably like the one myDad waged 50 years agowhen I was a kid. Only myDad (now passed on) didn’tuse an environmentally-friendly pokey-weeder. Hewas strictly a weapons ofmass destruction kind ofguy. Why take chances anduse a hand grenade when anatomic bomb would guaran-tee results.

He had a spray bottle witha home-made label and he’dwalk around the yard forhours dousing each offenderwith curses and the deadlyelixir. Something he’d con-cocted in his workroom backin the barn where he liked tohang out by himself with aradio and beer cooler no onewas allowed to touch. I’mguessing his secret dande-lion juice definitely con-tained DDT, cigarette ashesand hootch. Or whatevercombination of poisons ismost likely to reduce a dan-delion to toxic waste thatwill take nature eight billionmillennia to reclaim.

My Dad wasn’t big on na-ture having a say in thesematters. Man’s manifest des-tiny was to control and con-tain nature - especiallythose dastardly dandelions.Tomato hornworms werealso on his must-kill list. Igrew up thinking tomatoplants were white, that’show much death-powder heput on them.

I’d guess my mother washorrified, but there was nopoint in saying anything.My Dad knew everythingand everyone else knewsquat.

So I walk around my yard,extracting dandelions, pon-dering nature versus nur-ture. Do I have a genetic pre-disposition to kill dandies ordid watching my Dad stalkand spray them all thoseyears of my youth seal myfate?

There are no clear an-swers and I don’t claim it’s apretty picture. But my Dadwas my Dad, faults and all,and every time I jab mypokey-weeder in the groundand hear a dandelionscream, I know a little partof him is there with me.

Summer is the perfect sea-son for picnics and barbe-ques. However, it is also theseason where extra precau-tion must be taken whenhandling and preparing thetasty foods that are enjoyedat picnics.

Not only do people enjoythe summer ambiance, butbacteria also love it, too! Thewarm environment is per-fect for producing and grow-ing bacteria and otherpathogens within the foodthat cause foodborne illness.This health district sees anincrease in the number offoodborne disease casesevery summer. The veryyoung, the elderly and per-sons with chronic illness aremost susceptible to these ill-nesses. Dehydration, result-ing from the loss of bodilyfluids through diarrhea orvomiting, can lead to seriouscomplications, sometimesresulting in hospitalization.

There are easy steps totake to decrease the risk ofgetting a foodborne illness.The most important step toreduce the risk of spreadingfoodborne illness is hand-washing.

Handwashing should oc-cur before and after: han-dling raw meats; using thebathroom; petting animals;touching bare body parts;handling soiled equipmentand utensils; after sneezing,coughing, and/or usinghandkerchief or disposabletissue; and after using tobac-co, eating or drinking.

Proper handwashing oc-curs when hot soapy water isused for at least 20 seconds(sing the happy birthdaysong twice). If running wa-ter is not available you canset up a make-shift hand-washing station using handsoap and a containerequipped with a spigot, andfilled with warm water. Youcan also use disposable handwipes or a waterless handsanitizer if you have no ac-cess to running water.

Outdoor cooking, such asgrilling, can also have the po-tential of creating a food-borne illness. Marinatefoods such as raw meat, poul-try or seafood which hasbeen in the refrigerator untilneeded. Do not use the samesauce that was used to mari-nate the raw meat, poultry, orseafood on the cooked food.Also, do not use the sameplatter and utensils you usedto handle the raw food prod-uct to serve the cookedmeats, poultry and seafoodon.

When grilling the food,you must reach a certain in-ternal temperature to makesure food is cooked thor-oughly. Minimum tempera-ture requirements to killbacteria that may be withinfood are as follows: Groundbeef patties - 155° F; Chicken- 165° F; Fin fish and pork -145° F: Stuffed meats, fish orpoultry - 165° F; Shrimp, lob-ster, and crab - meat shouldbe opaque and pearly; Clams,mussels, and oysters – shellsmust be open.

How do you know youhave reached these tempera-tures? A food thermometer isthe tool you need to use. Takethe temperature in the mid-dle of the food product to en-sure proper temperature hasreached all parts of food.While a thermometer is thepreferred and best method tocheck for doneness, you cancut into meat to check fordoneness. The middle ofhamburger should be brownand the chicken should haveno pink.

Another important, yetsimple, food safety rule is :Keep hot foods hot and coldfoods cold! Pretty basic, butpretty important.

Many people think it ismayonnaise in food saladsthat cause foodborne illnesswhen in fact it is more likely

to be other ingredients. In-gredients such as pasta, po-tatoes, eggs and tuna must bethoroughly chilled (45° F orbelow) before combiningwith other ingredients. Thereason for this is bacteriacan grow when ingredientsare still warm. If you aretraveling to a picnic and arebringing macaroni or potatoor any type of salad contain-ing dairy, meat or eggs,transport it on ice in a cooler.Once salads are outdoors,the best way to keep themcool is to nest the salad bowlinto a bigger bowl that isfilled with ice.

Fruits and vegetables canalso cause food borne illnessif they are not handled prop-erly. Before cooking and/orserving, fruits and vegeta-bles should be washed underrunning water only (nosoap). Melons should becleaned using a vegetablebrush due to the fact thatbacteria and otherpathogens on melon rindscan spread into the melonwhen cutting into it. Cut mel-ons are considered potential-ly hazardous foods, so theymust be kept on cold whileserving.

Once everyone is done eat-ing, all leftovers must be re-frigerated immediately. Iffood is left out for more thattwo hours, it should be dis-carded. If the temperature is90° or above, do let food sitout for more than one hour.No one likes to discard food,but it may save a trip to theER! The rule here is: “Whenin doubt, throw it out!”

There are times when we all encountera great deal of complexity and stress inour daily lives. That complexity and stresssometimes revolves around the multipledemands that we face at work and in ourdaily lives. As we get wrapped up in thatcomplexity, we sometimes tend to forgetthat there are ways to help us relax,recharge and reset our inner compass toprovide more balance within our dailylives. Here in North Haven, one of the weekly events that Ithink is an excellent way to pause and relax is our annualsummer concert series.

This year we have expanded our concerts to a total of11, which includes 10 weeks of our “Music under theStars” series. We will be preceding those 10 concerts withone other concert that will consist of a local group of out-standing vocalists and musicians from North Haven whowill be performing a jazz concert festival on our green onTuesday, June 19th. I would like to personally thankStephen Cusano from North Haven for presenting thisidea to us and thank him also for his goal to give back toour wonderfully run North Haven school’s music depart-ment headed by Mr. Ken Tedeschi. This opening concertwill be a fabulous way to showcase our homegrown talent-ed young men and women as we kick off our regular con-cert series.

Starting with this jazz concert on June 19th, we willthen begin our “Music under the Stars” series on June26thth and we will have additional weekly concerts thatwill go all the way to Tuesday evening August 28th.

“We started this two-and-a-half years ago, when ourgirls were in kindergarten,so that our girls would have

something to look forward toby the time they’re in thethird grade,” said O’Brien,whose daughter Morgan at-tends Montowese with Wil-son’s children Natalie andAllison.

“Now, two of our daugh-ters will be entering third

grade. They’re our inspira-tion. And we’re getting clos-er to getting them a new play-ground,” she added.

Freda also spoke about de-velopments adjacent to theYale-New Haven project.

“I wanted to point out thatthe building that is being con-structed now is going tohouse a group of cardiolo-

gists,” Freda said. “We havea second building that is go-ing to be constructed later inthe year and that is going tobe a high-end animal surgi-cal referral center for thoseindividuals who have pets.”

This center is for pet own-ers whose animals may needtreatments such aschemotherapy, hip replace-ments and knee replace-ments.

“There are only two ofthese centers in the state andI am happy to report that wewere able to bring this busi-ness in,” Freda said.

Freda then explained thatplans for the third buildingin this development are stillunderway, with nothingscheduled yet, and that thetown is still entertainingpossible tenants.

The first selectman alsospoke about the HibachiGrill and Supreme Buffetslated for the Stop and ShopPlaza, adding that it is “mak-ing remarkable progress.”He hoped that its successwould bring an opportunityto fill an adjacent parcel, lo-cated between the grill andStop and Shop.

“We are actively enter-taining tenants there,” Fre-da said, “and we think thatonce the hibachi grill is upand running, that we willhave some good news on thatend of the plaza in the verynear future.”

Also mentioned wasLeon’s Restaurant, new toNorth Haven and tentativelyset to open in late July.

“We have a lot of excitingthings happening,” Freda

said.The meeting then focused

on the appointments andresignations of varioustown positions, startingwith Douglas E. Roberts,who had a seat on the Plan-ning and Zoning Commis-sion. Freda thanked Robertsfor all that he did for theTown of North Haven dur-ing his time on the commis-sion.

Bert Mozealous from theBoard of Education re-signed this past May aftermaking the decision to moveout of North Haven, and wasalso honored for his dedicat-ed services by the selectmen.

The Blight and Preven-tion Appeals Board gainedthree new members as theselectmen approved the ap-pointment of James H.Iovieno, Linda F. Currie-Zef-firo, and Steven M. Miller toserve a two-year term each.

Mary Ann Hardy was alsoappointed to the LibraryBoard to fill the unexpiredterm of Sara A. Aziz, term toexpire December 31, 2013.Todd Ricci was approved tofill a vacancy on the Ceme-tery Commission, term toexpire June 30, 2013. At the Hartt School of Mu-sic, Cusano is majoring injazz performance, an interesthe traces back in part toTedeschi’s tutelage.

“In high school I played

football and baseball. I could-n’t dedicate the time to musicas I would have wanted,” Cu-sano said. “Mr. T. was alwaysthere for me. He was an ath-lete in high school. He wentthrough North Haven HighSchool and played on Bob De-Mayo’s teams. He understoodmy situation. He was alwaysthere to talk to about music.”

“He introduced me intothe jazz world,” he added.“And that’s where I am now.”

Despite a busy athleticschedule in high school, Cu-sano still found time to playdrums in concert band andTedeschi’s smaller studentjazz groups. Moreover, heparticipated in the school-or-ganized band trips that he

now hopes to fundraise for.“We took those band trips

very seriously,” Cusano said.“Everyone was working hardall year to organize the tripand to prepare so that wecould get superior ratings,which were the highest rat-ings a band could get at thosecompetitions.”

“One year I went, we gotsuperior ratings,” he added.“It was almost like winningthe state championship forfootball. All your hard workpays off. That’s what Mr. Tshowed us, and that’s the atti-tude I have carried on withmy college-level music.”

Tedeschi was appreciativefor the concert in his honor.“It’s a lovely gesture by this

student and his friends,”Tedeschi said. “It’s wonder-ful to see that they are con-tinuing with music. If we atNorth Haven High Schoolwere of some motivation forthat, that’s great.”

“I’m very flattered thatthey’re doing this, and I’mflattered that they’re lettingme sit in and play some tuneswith them,” he added. “Ithink it’s going to be a greatnight of music. I’m verymuch looking forward to it.”

Cusano hoped that resi-dents would still attend instrong numbers, even if theyare not familiar with the per-formers or their musicalstyle. “I don’t know if peopleknow what to expect with

youth musicians or jazz.Hopefully, they’ll like listen-ing to it, and they’ll go homeand look up some of the jazzsongs,” he said. “Hopefullywe can help educate them onthis music. It’s never reallybeen on the North HavenGreen, as far as I know.”
