From the Wellness Ministry… Causes of Overeating

Despite our best intentions, we sometimes find

ourselves overeating, even when we’re not particu-

larly hungry. The most common causes of overeat-

ing are triggers--foods, feelings, or environmental

factors--that lead to eating too much.

Trigger Foods are specific foods that cause over-

eating. The most common trigger foods contain a

combination of sugar and fat (such as ice cream

or cookies) or salt and fat (such as potato chips or

French fries). It’s the food itself that causes over-

eating. Tips: Keep trigger foods out of your house!

Try eating healthier versions of the trigger foods

such as baked chips or low fat ice cream.

Trigger Feelings are emotions (good or bad) that

set off overeating. These emotions may be nega-

tive like stress and anxiety, or positive like a good

experience or comforting memory. Overeating is

driven not by hunger, but is associated with the

emotion. Tips: Wait 10 minutes before eating to

see if the feeling passes. If not, try distracting your-

self with an activity that doesn’t involve eating.

Trigger Environments are specific situations or

places that set off overeating out of habit. Exam-

ples include eating certain foods at movie thea-

ters, sporting events, or when visiting relatives be-

cause we always do it. Tips: As much as possible,

avoid situations in which you tend to overeat.

When you can’t avoid it, go in with a plan. For ex-

ample, at the movies, choose a calorie free bever-

age, a small popcorn without butter, and skip the

candy. Try meeting up with relatives for an activity

where eating is not the primary focus.

DIRECT YOUR DOLLARS We have met our third goal of $150,000 at

Family Fare. The papers are filed and we await our

check for $1,000. Fr. Gerald will use the money to

update and replace some vestments.

I’d like to acknowledge that the Grawn United

Methodist Church has decided not to participate in

this Direct Your Dollars fundraiser any longer. They

gave us over $11,000 worth of cash register tapes,

which put us over our goal. We thank them from

the bottom of our hearts for this generous gift.

DIRECT YOUR LABELS Family Fare has a new house brand of products

called OUR FAMILY. For every 500 UPC’s not logos

collected, we receive $25.00. We need the labels

with the UPC Code. They can be put in the second

container in the vestibule near the restrooms.

Thank you.

Oleson Receipts We hope you are saving your Oleson receipts! For

every 5000 points we receive $50. Please contin-

ue to drop them in the “Big White Box” marked

“Oleson’s” by the coat rack across from the

restrooms. Thank you.

St. Patrick Fall Bazaar 2019

October 19th & 20th The CCW is looking for silent auction items for the

upcoming Bazaar in October. Do you own a busi-

ness, have a special talent or have access to any

services such as landscaping, child care or medical

care? You can be as inventive as your imagination

takes you!

Most importantly, we are looking for volunteers for

this most important committee. If you can spare a

few hours or even more, we would love to work

with you. Please consider serving with us! Just

contact Mary Terese Meernik at

mtmeernikod@gmail. Thanks much, CCW
