Six Behaviors That Increase Self-Esteem
by Denis Waitley
Following are six behaviors that increase self-esteem, enhance your self-confidence, and spur your motivation. You may recognize some of themas things you naturally do in your interactions with other people. But ifyou dont, I suggest you motivate yourself to take some of these
important steps immediately.
First, greet others with a smile and look them directly in the eye. A smileand direct eye contact convey confidence born of self-respect. In thesame way, answer the phone pleasantly whether at work or at home, andwhen placing a call, give y our name before asking to speak to the partyyou want to reach. Leading with your name underscores that a person withself-respect is making the call.
Second, always show real appreciation for a gift or compliment. Dontdownplay or sidestep expressions of affection or honor from others. T heability to accept or receive is a universal mark of an individual with solid
self-esteem.
Third, dont brag. Its almost a paradox that genuine modesty is actuallypart of the capacity to gracefully receive compliments. People who bragabout their own exploits or demand special attention are simply trying tobuild themselves up in the eyes of othersand thats because they dontperceive themselves as already worthy of respect.

If You Think You Can, You Can byDenisWaitley
You can be a total winner, even if you're a beginner
If you think you can you can, if you think you can you can
You can wear the gold medallion, you can ride your own black stallion
If you think you can you can, if you think you can you can
It's not your talent or the gifted birth
It's not your bank book that determines worth
It isn't in your gender or the color of your skin
It's your attitude that lets you win
You can live with "coulds" or "shoulds," or be like Tiger Woods
If you think you can you can, if you think you can you can
Even if you're hesitant, you can be a woman President
If you think you can you can, if you think you can you can
It doesn't matter what you've done beforeIt makes no difference what the halftime score
It's never over 'til the final gun
So keep on trying and you'll find you've won
Just grab your dream and then believe it
Go out and work, and you'll achieve it
If you think you can, you can
If you think you can, you can

Six Behaviors That Increase Self-Esteem
(Continued)
Fourth, dont make your problems the centerpiece of y our conversation. Talk positively about yourlife and the progress youre trying to make. Be aware of any negative thinking, and take notice ofhow often you complain. When you hear yourself criticize someoneand this includes self-criticismfind a way to be helpful instead of critical.
Fifth, respond to difficult times or depressing moments by increasing your level of productiveactivity. When your self-esteem is being challenged, dont sit around and fall victim to paralysis byanalysis. The late Malcolm Forbes said, Vehicles in motion use their generators to charge their ownbatteries. Unless you happen to be a golf cart, y ou cant recharge your battery when youre parked inthe garage!
Sixth, choose to see mistakes and rejections as opportunities to learn. View a failure as the

conclusion of one performance, not the end of y our entire career. Own up to your shortcomings, butrefuse to see y ourself as a failure. A failure may be something you have doneand it may even besomething youll have to do again on the way to successbut a failure is definitely not something youare.
Even if youre at a point where youre feeling very negatively about yourself, be aware that yourenow ideally positioned to make rapid and dramatic improvement. A negative self-evaluation, if itshonest and insightful, takes much more courage and character than the self-delusions that underliearrogance and conceit. Ive seen the truth of this proven many times in my work with athletes. After
an extremely poor performance, a team or an individual athlete often does much better the nexttime out, especially when the poor performance was so bad that there was simply no way to shirkresponsibility for it. Disappointment, defeat, and even apparent failure are in no way permanentconditions unless we choose to make them so. On the contrary, these undeniably painful experiencescan be the solid foundation on which to build future success.

If You Had a Million Dollars
by Ron White
I saw a movie a few years ago that had a very funny scene. One of the characters asked the other whathe would do if he had a million dollars. He replied, Nothing.... If I had a million dollars, I would just
relax all day long and enjoy myself. Another guy chimed in and seriously stated, Hey, y ou dont needa million dollars to do that... just look at my cousin... he is flat broke and he doesnt do a thing but sitthere all day long.
I think I laughed about that for an hour and it just caused me to smile again.Although the line in the movie was a joke, it illustrates a truth of life. Whatever it is that you wish todo, do it! Why wait? Seriously, why put off your dreams until tomorrow or until you get all your ducksin a row. Guess what? The ducks of life sometimes have a mind of their own and tend to wander a lot.You may never get all your ducks in a row.
I have been a professional speaker since I was 20 years old. When I was 27, I was speaking with awoman and she said, I am 59 years old and by the time I am 65 I would like to have my masters
degree and be working as a professional speaker. I looked at her perplexed as I inquired, Why in theworld are you going to wait until you are 65 and have a degree? I am 27 years old with no degree and Iam speaking tomorrow! You could tell that my statement shattered her reality and she had noresponse.
This woman was waiting to pursue her dream until everything was just perfect. Until she hadeverything that she thought she needed to ensure maximum success, when in reality the greatest thingthat she could have done is simply move in the direction of what she desires.
The greatest resistor of human dreams is the If I had a million dollars attitude. Individuals dreamthat if they had a million dollars, they could pursue their vision. No they wouldnt! If you dont pursueyour vision when you are broke, when you grasp a million, you will create another reason why it isntpossible. Or if you are one of the few who would actually live their dreams if you had a million dollars, what is the probability that you are going to save a million dollars?
Ever heard this train of thought?Once I get out of high school I am going to see the world and travelOnce I finish college I am going to see the world and travelOnce I get married I am going to travel with my spouseAfter our kids are older we are going to see the world and travelWhen our kids get out of high school we are going to see the world and travelAs soon as we retire we are going to see the world and travelNow, I am out of school, the kids are gone and I am retired; if I was younger and my health was better

I would see the world and travelDont wait
Many questions of life are complicated and unclear, yet the question of if you should pursue yourdream or wait until you have a million dollars is as clear as the waters of Fiji. You are not promisedtomorrow. You are not promised a million dollars. Pursue your dream today and inch closer or it willremain equally as distant as the pages of your life near the final chapter.
