(John 10 :10-11)

l i fe in i ts fu l lness." I have come in order that you might have l i fe,I am the Good shepherd, who is wi l l ing to die for the sheep."

(HRI'TIAN IIESJAGE:

With trust and confldence in Christ and in His words, we believe that thefullness of life promised to us by Christ will be fulfilled. It is the reason of Christ'scoming that we may share His l i fe in abundance. I t is through and in our union withHim that we can attain the fullness of life.

If we analyze the dlfferent life's situations that confront us every day, wemay be caught up with a doubt, i f this dream can st i l l be real ized We can see withouT own eyes that poverty and ignorance are the hindrances that contrad ct thegrowth and progress of man in himself. Self lshness and greed of man towardsothers, choked the total development of the individual human person.

When one addresses the needs of the whole person (physical, sociological, moral & spir i tual), then i t is said that he/she is truly involved in the total humandevelopment of the person.

Pope John Paul I I reminds us that," Integral development of people is thedevelopment of every indlvidual person in his totality, especially the poorest- is atthe very heart of evangelization." (Ecclesia in Africa # 68)

Based on this vision Pope Paul V1 also said that, "Development cannot belimited to mere economic growth."(Populorum Progressio # 14) For it to berealized it must be integral and complete. It simply means that it has to promotethe well being of the whole man.

-of the couple's sharing in God's power to create l i fe.

However, receiving the gift of life calls for equai co responsiLrllity. The caringfor life will only be a value if love and faith is sown in the heart of every member ofthe family. Growth in proper values of life teaches the family members to understandthat their future does not only depend on material possessions but on the spir i tualr ichness of l i fe and faith of the chi ldren of God.

A sign of our " l iv ing faith" is that we recognize the tender and unfai i ingpresence of God in al l our charitable thoughts, words, and deeds.(Catechism for Fi l ipino Cathol ics # 341).

The present si tuation of famil ies today ref lect also the real condit ion of oursociety. Families that do not have faith or have weak in faith in God, divided andwithout love is also a reflection of a weak and baseless community. On the otherhand, the increasing number of famil ies that strongly upholds the value of good-ness, love and life contribute to the growth in life of society in accordance with thewil l of God.

FAITH RE'PON'E

Aside from what we can see and experience in our family, we are stillinvited to call our loving Father in faith to celebrate His gift of life and love. It is codthe creator, who assists each of one us in times of our weakness. In the HolyEucharist, we experience the One who is truly with us in our family, Jesus, ourLord. (Catechism for Fi l ipino Cathol ics # 342).

At the end ofthe reflection the participants may be asked to answer the followingouestrons:

1. These past days, how did you show that you care and love yourfamilies throuoh vour activities?

Those who make their studies and surveys about the social si tuations, have theiranswers based on the science of sociology. Let us listen to the Word of God and tothe Church teachings, and let us reflect on the realities that is closelv related to thecondition of the poor in our society.

WORD OF GOD: (Luke 10: 25-37)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan.

Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher, he said, what must ido to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? Whatdo you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God withal l your heart, and with al l your soul, and with al l your strength, and with al lyour mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You havegiven the r ight answer; do this and you wil l l ive."

But wanting to just l fy himself, he asked Jesus, "and who is my neighbor?"Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and feliinto the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road;and when he saw him, he passed by the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. Buta Samaritan while travel ing came near him; and when he saw him, he wasmoved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, after havingpoured oi l and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, broughthim to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denari i ,gave them to the inn keepe4 and said, "Take care of him; and when Icome back, I will repay you whatever more you spend. Which of thesethree, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fel l into the hands ofthe robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said tohim, "Go and do l ikewise' i (NRSV)

resemblance bewveen the unity of the Divine persons and the fraternity that menare established among themselves in truth and in love. Love of neighbor is inseparablefrom love of God. (CCC # 1878) The human person needs to live in a society.Through the exchange with others, mutual service and dialogue with his brethren, man develop his potentials; he thus responds to his vocation. (CCC # 1879)

The duty of making oneself a neighbor to others and actively serving thembecomes more urgent when it involves the disadvantaged, in whatever area itmight be. "As you did it to one of the least of the brethren, you did it to me."(Catechism of the Cathol ic Church # 1932 Mt. 25:40)

The lives of saints are living proof of Christ words in this Gospel. In the lifeof St. Elizabeth of Hungary she had shown her love for the sick and the poor. Asa young queen married to King Louis of Thuringia, i t was said that one night shehad a poor leper slept in their chamber. The poor man was given food andmedicine by the queen herself. When the king found out was she had done, hewas so mad that together with some servants he immediately went to their roomto drive the leper away. But much to their astonishment, they found Jesus lying onthe bed. From then on, the king and his followers had realized that whatever thequeen did to the poor and the needy, she is doing it to Jesus. (Paano Sila NagingBanal Vol. I I)

This is the kind of faith that we need in our present society - faith with action- the kind of faith that helps to alleviate the sufferlngs of the poor and the needy. Ahelp that is not only material but social, emotional and spiritual as well, This is the onlyway by which we can follow God's command of loving our neighbors.

FAITH RESPONJE:

PCP lI had the Love of preference for the Poor as the social Doctrine forthe Philippine Church. This option takes on the greatest urgency in our countrywhere a very great number of our people wallow ln abject poverty and mrserywhi/e tremendous social privileges and deference are accorded to the rich and thepowerfu/. (PCP II # 312)

When Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, He wentto the synagogue on the Sabbath day as was his custom. He stood up to readand the scrol l of the prophet Isaia was given Him. He unrol led the scrol l and foundthe place where i t was writ ten:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bringGood News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captivesand recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaimthe year of the Lord's favor." (NRSV)

WORD OF GOD: Luke 4: 16-1e

CHRI'TIAN ^AEJJAGE:

The social order and its development must unceasingly work to the benefltof the human person if the disposition of affairs is to be subordinated to thepersonal realm and not contrary wise as the Lord indicated when he said that the3abbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. (GS # 26)

In the vision-mission of the local Church in the Archdiocese of Manila, thereis this deepest dream and aspiration towards the fullness of life. And to make thisdream become a reality, the "Pondo ng Pinoy" was created.

The "Pondo ng Pinoy" is one of our longings to live up to the power of thespirit of Jesus in us. Lhrist Spirit aims to give to each person the fullness of life.ihir .un only be done i f our eyes are open to the truth that growth anddevelopment is not only for the individual person. And i f our heart and mind isdeeolv rooted in faith to our Lord Jesus Christ.

OPENING PRAYER

Come Holy Spir i t , enl ighten our minds and set our hearts on f l re. May webe open to your words and teachings so that we may share the love you havegiven us through your Son Jesus. We ask this in the name of our Lord JesusChrist .

tlFE tITUATION (snort story)

This story happened in a ceftain place in India where lvlo. Teresa of Calcuttaonce lived. One day, she gave a bowl of "lugaw" to a mother The mother leftimmediately after receiving a bowl of "lugaw" and lvlo.Teresa followed her to herhome. fvlo.Teresa witnessed how poor and miserable the life of the people in thatplace. But she was deeply touched when she saw how the mother div ided thebowl of " lugaw" among her hungry chi ldren and even shared some of i t to thechi ld ren of her neighbor.

At present, our situation in this country is not much different from that ofthe piace where Mo. Teresa helped that family. Looking around us, we see howdiff lcult l i fe is for most of our fel low Fi l ipino famil ies. The number of chi ldren, adults, famil ies l iving in the streets, under the bridges, along the rai lways, and r iverbanksare continuously growing in number.

1. How many of us are bothered by this situation of poverty and misery?2. Do we ask for reasons why these situations exist?

-community, "marked by a love of preference for the poor" (PCP II 278, 435-37;cFc 9s4).

We acknowledge that love of neighbor is the key to changes in social structure andinstitutions. It is because our way of helping others becomes real only if one ismoved by his or her social and community responsibility (CCC 1906-17)"To love is to will the good of the other." "The fruits of charity are joy, peace andmerry (CCC L766,1829).

-'. tott" REtPoNtE

l'4any of us feel pity for those who are in need, those beggars living in thestreets but we do not do anything to help them. At times we even try to evadethem or don't mind them at all. And when we give something to them its not outof the generosity of our hearts but just to get rid of them.

Our little way of showing compassion to them is already a sign of greatlove. This is what "Pondo ng Pinoy" is all about. The little a mount that we give like10, 25, 50 centavo is already a concrete way of loving if it is done out of love forChrist and like Christ's love especially for the poor.

Every time we offer to the "Pondo ng Pinoy" Christ's love becomes aliveand moves in the community. When we share to the "Pondo ng Pinoy" weconstantly show to those who are in need of Christ's love a concrete way of caringfor them like that of Christ.

To end this lesson, the participants could be invited to a silent reflectionusing the following guide questions:

1. How can we show God's love even in small but concrete ways to ourfamily?

2. Aside from the "Pondo ng Pinoy" how can you show God's love to thosewho are in great need?

There was also a poor man namedLazarus, covered with sores, who used to be brought to the rich man'sdoor, hoping to eat the bits of food that fell from the rich man's table.Even the dogs would come and lick His sores. The poor man died and wascarried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the feast in heaven. Therich man died and was buried in Hades, where he was in great pain.He looked up and saw Abraham, far away with Lazarus at His side, so hecalled out, "Father Abraham! Take pity on me and send Lazarus to dip Hisfinger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain inthls fire", but Abraham said, "Remember, my son/ that in your lifetime youwere given all the good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things, but nowHe is enjoying himself here, while you are in pain, besides al l that, there is adeep pit lying between us, so that those who want to cross over from hereto you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross over to us from where you are.The rich man said," Then I beg you, Father Abraham, send Lazarus to myfather's house, where I have flve brothers. Let him go and warn them sothat thev at least will not come to this place of pain. Abraham said "yourbrothers have Moses and the prophets to warn them, your brothers shouldlisten to what they say: The rich man answered "That is not enough,Father Abraham but if someone were to rise from death and go to them, then thev would turn from their sins." But Abraham said, "if they will notlisten to Moses and the prophet, they will not be convinced even if some-one were to rise from death".

CHRI'TTAN AAEJJAGE:

There are many ways to holiness of life, according to the vocation of eachindividual. I thank the Lord that in these years he has enabled me to proclaimthe holiness of a large number of Christians, by making them "saints" or blessed, many of them are lay people who attained holiness in the most simple andordinary ways of living. It is but timely to re-propose heartedly to everyone thehigh standard of ordinary Christian living: The whole life of the Christian communityand of the Christian families must Iead in this direction. OPENTNG PRAYER:

Lord, our God and Father, you created us into your likeness, and constantlyrenews us to be closer to you. Forgive our stubbornness of heart and our disobe-dience to your wil l . Teach and form us through our work and dai ly experience.Above all create a new heart in us that we may learn to love as you love, throughJesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spir i t . Amen.

LIFE JITUATION:

We have a saying that says "Practice makes perfect," which expresses thevalue of doing good habitually. Anyone among you who have this experience isinvited to share their story to begin our lesson about the saying "practice makesoe rfect".

(One or two maybe chosen to narrate briefly their experience)

*lq REFLEGTToN:"uEt1In this present and modern t imes, boredom is a common experlence

usually caused by doing nothing or repeatedly doing the same thing. People areeither short of patience or they easily lose the satisfaction in what they are doing. The work done over and over again becomes a "life style" and sooner it is justdone mechanically with no meaning at all. This is contrary to our early experienceof learning through repetition. That is how we were taught to write and to add.Valuing cleanliness for example is the effect of the habit of cleaning the house. It isthe result of daily sweeping the surroundings, dusting the furniture, etc. With this inmind. we understand that the formation of the heaft and mind of man happensthrough repeated small acts of goodness.

REFTECTION:

All our needs to live with dignity as a total human person is lovingly provided by ourlovinq God. Let us see the truth of this based on the Word of God.

WORD Ol GOD (Psalm 8: 4-6)

"What is man that you think of him; mere man that you care for him Yetyou made him inferior only to yourself; you crowned him with glory andironor. You aDpointed him ruler over everlthing you made; you placed himover all your creatlon."

CHRI'TIAN AAEJSAGE:

The basic foundation of our concern for others springs from the unconditionallove of God for us. Despite our ingratitude and selfishness, despite the enormousgap of man in God , He still crowned him with glory and honor.

With creation, God does not abandon his creatures to themselves' He notonly gives them being and existence, but also, and at every moment, upholds andtusi.inr them in being..."( Catechism of the Catholic Church # 301)

have made; for you would not have made anything if you had hated it' How wouldanything have endured, if you had not willed it? Or how would anything not calledfortn UV you have been preserved? You spare all things, for they are yours, O

OPENING PRAYER:

Loving Father, today we offer you our longings and dreams and even ourburdens in life. May we obtain through the power of Jesus, your Son the strengthof His Spir i t to keep us al ive and happy. This we ask through Jesus, our LordAm en.(or sing an appropriate song ).

Sometimes we have what we call "brown outs" where we experience theloss of electricity: as a consequence there is no light, no television, no radio, nomachines, etc.

1. How do you feel when there is "brown out'i especially during working hours?2. What do you usually do when there is a brown out? (at home, in the

office, in the hospital, or anywhere)

REFTE(TION

In our modern communities today, we can say that, majority are alreadyprovided by electricity. But still many of us who have no generator are affectedbecause we cannot work effectivelv when there are " brown outs".

In our 9th Lesson we shall focus our reflection on " JESUS, THE MOSTPOWERFUL UGHT OF LIFE". He said, " I am the Light, I am the Life." lesus is the"superpower" who gives life to humankind.

in the body of Christ." (Efeso 4:25) because we have been joined into the onebody by the same Spir i t (1 Cor 12 :13)

Jesus teaches us that we have to be born again in water and in Spirit so asto enter His Kingdom (John 3:5) This simply means that al l of us who werebaptized are chal lenged to become witnesses of this new l i fe in Him. I t is thissacrament which gives life to those who lie in death and corruption (Catechism forFiliDino catholicsl593)

FAITH RE'PON'E

Therefore, It is through baptism that we share ln the death and resurrec-tion of Christ. In falth, by the power of baptism ("born in water and spirit) everyChristian receives the sanctifying grace and the capacity to grow in doing goodworks everyday, and slowly turn away from sin in order to follow Christ..

Al l the baptized Christ ians come f irst in the l i fe of the Church, throughthem, the Church becomes a living foundation to make them realize that theythemselves are the Church , a community of believers under the guidance of theHoly Father, who is the head of al l , and the bishops with him... The baptized layfaithful becomes sharer in the tripled mission of Christ: Priestly, Prophetic, andKingly. (Catechism of the Cathol ic Church # 901-907) To l ive this tr iple mission ofChrist is our radical response to our baptismal promise.

Through the gift of new life which we received in the sacrament ofbapt ism we become uni ted with Christ . In our day to day l iv ing howcan we respond to the call of the newness of life in us?

United with the local Church in our community, what more can weshare, aside from "Pondo ng Pinoy"?

WORD OF GOD {Mt. 25: 34 - 4o)

The king wil l say to those on his r ight:

"Come, you have my Father's blessing! Inherit the kingdom prepared foryou from the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave mefood, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and youwelcomed me, naked and you clothed me. I was i l l and you comfofted me,in prison and you came to visi t me. Then, the just wi l l ask him: Lord, whendid we see you hungry and feed you or see you thirsty and give you drink? When did we welcome you away from home or clothe you in your naked-ness? When did we visi t you when you were i l l or in prison? The king wil lanswer them: I assure you, as often as you did i t for one of my leastbrothers. vou did i t for me."

CHRI'TIAN AAE''AGE

The family has essential and vital links in society. It is for this reason thatour family has the responsibility to share and be in solidarity with other familiesocnorie l l rr thp n^^r

All members of the family, each according to his or her own gift, have thegrace and responsibility of building day by day, the communlon of persons, makingthe family "a school of deeper humanity'; this happens where there is care andlove for the little ones, the sick, the aged, where there is mutual service everyday, when there is a sharing of goods, ofjoys and of sorrows. (Familiaris Consortio # 21).

In order that a family could be of service to humanity as based on theGospels, it is altogether necessary that one should consider in one's nelghbor theimage of God in which he has been created, and also Christ the Lord to whom isreally offered whatever is given to a needy person. (Apostolicam Actuositatem # 8).

CHRI'TIAN TIIEJJAGE:

The pi lgr im church is "missionary by her very nature, since, i t is from themission of the Son and the mission of the Holy Spir i t that she draws her origin, inaccordance with the degree of God the Father." (AG #2) Therefore every mem-ber of the church has a paft in this mission, " the responsibi l i ty to proclaim ourfaith." (LG. # 17)

Let us Iisten to Pope John Paul VI: "the family, like the church, ought to bea place where the Gospel is transmitted and from which the Gospel radiates. In afamily which is conscious of this mission, al l the members evangelize and areevangelized, The apostolic mission of the family is rooted in Baptism and receivesfrom the grace of the Sacrament of marriage new strength to transmit the faith."(FC.# s2).

The family is placed at the service of the bui lding up of the kingdom of Godin history by part icipating in the l i fe and mission of the church. (FC # 49) I t shouldnot be forgotten that the service rendered by Christian spouses and parents tothe gospel is essential ly an ecclesial service. (FC # 53)

8y proclaiming the Word of God, the Church reveals to the Christ ian familyi ts true identi ty, what i t is and should be according to God's plan. The Christ lanfamily is cal led upon to take part act ively and responsibly in the mission of thechurch in a way that is original and specif lc by placing i tselt in lvhat i t is and what i tdoes as an " int imate communitv of l i fe and love," at the service of the church andof society. (FC # 49)

The Christ ian family also bui lds up the Kingdom of God through the every-day real i t ies that concern and dist inguish i ts state of l i fe, and through i ts paft icipa-t ion in the prophetic, priest ly and kingly mission of Jesus. (FC # 50)

The Christ ian family fulf i l ls i ts prophetic role by welcoming and announcingthe Word of God. (FC # 51)

"The Holy Spir i t wi l l come on you, and God's power wil l rest upon you. Forthis reason the holy Child will be called the Son of God." "I am the Lord'sservant", said lulary: "May it happen to me as you have said." Soon after-wards Mary got and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea. Shewent into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heardMary's greetings, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled by theHoly Spirit and said in a loud voice, "You are most blessed of all women, and blessed is the chi ld you wil l bear! Why should this great thing happento me. that mv Lord's mother comes to visit me?

CHRT'TIAN 'IAE''AGE

Far from being closed in on itself the family is by nature and vocation opento other Famil ies and society. (Catechism for Fi l ipino Cathol ics #1010, Famil iar isconsortio # 42) like Mary in the reading, she gave joy to Elizabeth and to others, because she carries within her womb the Good News- none other than the LordJesus Christ.

The famil ies therefore, either slngly or in associat ion can and should de-vote themselves to manifold social service activities, especially in favor of the poor.(Catechism for Fi l ipino Cathol ics #1019, Famil iar is Consort io # 44 ).

The social and pol i t ical role of the Christ ian family is included in the kinglymission of service in which Christian couples share by virtue of the sacrament ofmarriage, and they receive both a command which they cannot ignore and agrace which sustalns and st imulates them.

The Christian family is thus called upon to offer everyone a witness ofgenerous and disinterested dedication to social matters, through a preferentialoption" for the poor and disadvantaged. Therefore advancing in its following of theLord by special love for all the poor.It must have special concern for the hungrythe poor, the old, the sick, drug victims and those who have no fa mily. (familiarisconsortio # 47) "contribute to the needs of the saints, open our door to extendhospital i ty to strangers. (Rom. 12:13 )
