• Anaerobic conditions produce methane and carbon dioxide.– Methane burned off in a controlled manner to

prevent explosions.

Secure Landfills

• Landfills that are covered once they are full and have wells drilled in them so they can be monitored for leakage from the site

• Store hazardous and toxic wastes.

• Bioremediation – removal of contaminants from the soil by living things.– Eg. Sunflowers break down radiation into non-
