6 reasons why authors dont build email lists

Email marketing is the number one way for authors to increase book sales and improve their royalties. Few of them do it - or do it well. Why not? Here are the top 6 reasons - from an informal poll we conducted, together with how to overcome those reasons. Plus some tips and ideas to get started and a link to our course if you want to learn more and get started today. Email marketing - or building a list - is the best way to 'capture' the people who are buying your book (on Amazon or elsewhere). By offering them something free in return for their email address, you can stay in contact with them. Then you will be able to let them know when your books are on offer, or perhaps when you will be speaking on a teleseminar/webinar, guest posting on virtual book tours, or doing real, live signings in actual book stores! Building a relationship with your readers is a win-win situation. Readers want a lot from their authors! One of my favorite authors, Bill Bryson, brought a new book out in hardback a few months ago. I noticed it in stores but didn't buy it because I'm not a fan of hardbacks (hard to read in the bath, my arms ache!). Last week I saw that it was out in paperback and I was furious that I hadn't realized! If I had been on his list (if he has one), I would have found out in an email and rushed to buy it. That's the sort of relationship you need to build. One that lets your readers have a peek into your life, your writing process, your inspirations. One that builds mutual trust and respect.It doesn't have to be salesy or irritating. It's just about maintaining communication. In your emails to your readers, you can share all sorts of things. There are a few ideas in the presentation, you can probably come up with more. You can also ask them to join your list of beta readers for future books (free proofreading!). Kindle used to be a goldmine but it is getting harder. You need to do everything you can do improve your own visibility, establish yourself as a credible expert, and increase the discoverability of your books. Anything you do, online or off, can then be shared with your list and you have a ready source of people to consume that content. Email marketing is the way to go!TRANSCRIPT
