maximum.The school is currently offer-

ing the training to seniors only. That’s because the students will have one year after completing the class to take the certification exam, and EMT candidates must be at least 18 to take the test. Younger students who take the class may not be old enough to take the exam before the one-year deadline is up, Edwards said.

However, the school also added

a more general introductory class in public safety that covers more areas of emergency response than just emergency medicine. That course is open to sophomores and juniors, and in the future could become part of a larger set of public safety class offerings at the high school, Edwards said. The students who take the public safety classes can then go on to complete the EMT coursework when they become seniors.

Firefighter training is some-

thing else the school hopes to offer students in the future, the principal added.

“Discussions are in the works for that, so we have high expecta-tions,” Edwards said.

The school already offers nurs-ing fundamentals and CNA cer-tification training, has expanded its sports medicine offerings and is working with Sandhills Com-munity College to expand other opportunities for students.

The program is ultimately

meant to expand beyond the high school, Edwards said.

“We see this branching out be-yond just our high school students. As this program really becomes stabilized and our firefighting becomes a reality, which it is very shortly, the adults – the local fire departments – have a place here where we can offer EMT in the evenings, or firefighting units can use the facilities and the tower when it’s set up, on the weekends or afternoons,” he said. “For our high school students, our hope is that as they graduate they’ll be earning credits that will take them on to a two-year college degree…something similar that they can continue to get EMT II and the certifications that go with that.”

BLET gradsRecent graduates of the Sandhills-Hoke Basic Law Enforcement Training program are, front row left to right, Kellin Woods, Jessica Friede, Joseph Evans, Edward Clark, Program Director Dave Reece; and, back row, Timothy Landry, Caleb Howard, Fredrick Rowdy, Tony Sanders, and Thomas Owens. The program takes place August-June one or two days per week.

Former principals Tonya Caulder and Dr. Krista Friedrich are both still employed with the school system but are now working in different administrative roles, ac-cording to a Hoke County Schools spokesperson. Caulder is now serving as the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) and Multi-Tiered System of Sup-port (MTSS) coordinator for the school system, and Friedrich is serving as the schools’ student hearing officer and personnel support coordinator.

Kimberly Foley - Sandy Grove Elementary

Foley grew up in Basset, Virginia and graduated from Methodist College before it be-came Methodist University. She went on to earn a master’s degree in school administration from Fayetteville State. Before com-ing to Hoke County, she worked in Cumberland County Schools.

Foley is married and her hus-band is an active-duty member of the military stationed at Fort Bragg. They have three children, and the two that are school-aged attend Hoke public schools.

Working to build relationships with the community and making Sandy Grove Elementary a wel-coming environment, as well as challenging students to improve their academic performance, are all goals for the upcoming year, the new principal said.

“I’m very big on community and not just the parents of the kids who go here but the entire community around us,” she said. “We want everyone to see the great things we’re doing, and re-ally look at each individual person and their needs.”

That includes looking at the needs of each child, each teacher and each parent, Foley said.

Since coming in to lead the school, Foley said she’s been having meetings with the teach-ers and staff to talk about how to make Sandy Grove Elementary a

welcoming place.“We’ve had a lot of meetings

about what we want our school to be and what we want it to look like when you walk in the door,” she said.

Foley hopes to work with the teachers to help foster a “positive culture” and to continue building on the achievements of the stu-dents in the past few years.

“(We want to) continue work-ing on growth and meet each child where they are and help them forward,” she said. “We’re want-ing to increase the academic rigor so we have all our kids ready for college and career.”

Foley is joined by about eight or nine newly hired teachers who are joining the school this year. Most of them have previous teaching experience while two are new graduates teaching for the first time.

The new principal said she’s “really excited and very thankful” to be leading the school.

“I say it everywhere I go that Hoke County Schools is the best. Not just in the state, but the best,” Foley said.

Michael Armstrong – Turling-ton Alternative School

Former West Hoke Middle School vice principal Michael Armstrong is the new principal for Turlington Alternative School, which offers students who have been suspended from other county schools as a way to keep working toward graduation in a smaller, more focused setting.

Armstrong grew up in Laurin-burg and graduated from Scotland High School in 1976 and went into the military, where he served for 22 years – and where he first de-veloped his passion for education.

“It was in the military that I was introduced to education. My unit got a partnership in education with an alternative school. I was given the opportunity to work with those young folk, and it gave me a direction where I wanted to go once I got out of the military.

So, I went to college to become a teacher,” he said.

He taught at Spring Hill Middle School for seven years and then went to West Hoke Middle School as an assistant principal for seven and a half years before being of-fered the position at Turlington.

Armstrong sees working with students in an alternative school setting as a chance to provide leadership for them and help them create a better life for themselves.

“It was seeing the need for leadership, for somebody to be a role model to the young folk that found their way into alternative school, to know there was a better way of life,” he said. “I believe our Creator has given each one of us something that we do bet-ter than most people. Maybe not better than everybody, but we do it better than most people, and I believe education is the window to what that talent is.”

Armstrong said he had his own struggles when he was a student. Those experiences helped prepare him for this position in working with students who have had dif-ficulty in a more traditional school environment, he said.

“I just want to help young folk be the best they can be,” the new principal said.

Students coming to Turlington this week will see the evidence of capital projects work that took place over the summer to improve the facilities, as well as meeting the new principal and his vision for the future of the school.

“The building has been reno-vated. I think that was a very good thing because now it’s a new look for Turlington,” Armstrong said. “I have a vision for Turlington in the future, that it will be a school of hope that young people will feel like instead of coming here to be punished, they’re coming here to get themselves together, to be prepared, to step back into their home school. Or, if they end up staying here, that they’ll find a place that will help them become successful.”

living center in the Puppy Creek Fire District and have lunch with them once a month.

Firehouse Magazine praised the program for giving the as-sisted living center residents more contact with the outside world while fostering a better working relationship between the fire sta-tion and the community.

“In an emergency, a face that a person is familiar with is calming. Firefighters have an opportunity to show their equipment as well. Not only do the residents benefit from the visits, but so do the responders, who get a better understanding of how to best communicate with the elderly patients,” the maga-

zine’s staff wrote in the awards announcement. “This program brings happiness to a group of citizens who are often forgotten.”

Puppy Creek Fire Department serves the most heavily populated area of the county and is respon-sible for providing fire protec-tion to both of Hoke County’s hospitals, as well as many other commercial and residential struc-tures. The department was the first in the county to hire full-time professional firefighters to work alongside the volunteer firefight-ers, and earlier this month Puppy Creek became the first department in the county to purchase a ladder truck—a $1 million truck with a 100-foot-long ladder.

Firehouse Magazine’s other awardees this year included a group of Ohio-based fire depart-ments that provide firefighting equipment to fire stations in Ke-nya, Zambia, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone; and DeWayne Eckerdt of the San Francisco Fire Depart-ment for his work with the San Francisco Firefighters in Safety Education program.

Parents As Teachers

You have probably heard your child humming or singing to himself. He may even make up his own songs and likes play-ing his imaginary guitar. Young children are musically creative by nature. They say that music is the universal language; besides being fun, it is beneficial to children.

Studies show that music and movement have a positive effect on many areas of brain develop-ment. The repetition in music helps children identify and orga-nize patterns, which helps their reading, math and memory skills.

Music also helps the brain pro-cess space and time. In fact, brain scans of professional musicians show that most of the cerebral cortex is active when they are playing music.

Other benefits of music and creative movement include:

_ Relieving stress, strengthen-ing muscles and refining move-ments

_ Enriching and supporting language development

_ Helping children learn to reg-ulate their feelings and behavior

_ Encouraging children to calm, comfort and entertain themselves

_ Assisting children with transitions.

You can help your child keep his music creativity into adult-hood in so many ways. You can start by surrounding your child with a wide variety of music. Tune in to what type of music family members like and play it often in the car and in the house. Teach your child simple songs

or rhymes. Practice clapping to a beat.

Before your child makes his own music, he needs to experi-ment making all kind of sounds, and make and play simple in-struments. Encourage your child to make noise with household objects like empty containers, pots and utensils. Offer him instruments to pluck, bang, and blow into. Start with ones he can use on his own. Good choices in-clude kazoos, harmonicas, rhythm sticks, xylophones, and maracas.

You do not have to be a musi-cian to enjoy music with your child. Remember to always treat your child’s musical creativity with respect. Do not criticize his efforts or tell him he is singing the words wrong. By enjoying music with your child, you are building his confidence, working on his patience and discipline and, also very important, fostering creativity.

Parents As Teachers is a free and voluntary program that is available to all families with children ages 0-5 who live in Hoke County. Parent educators are available to help you be your child’s first, best, and most influ-ential teacher.
