6.4 ALUMNI TRACKING Describe the tracking procedure. Describe how permanent records are kept on alumni and what the records contain.
Alumni tracking systems are maintained at the University, College and Program level, as discussed below.
• Alumni Association: The UC Denver campus has an Alumni Association that works through the CU Foundation to track alumni. The CU Foundation is the fund-raising arm of the University of Colorado System. Graduation lists each semester are automatically transferred from the admissions office to the Alumni Development System. The Association has access to an on-line computer system to track specific information on individuals who have graduated. Updates are made through the CU Foundation. The Association primarily has contact with alumni who self-select to participate in their programs upon graduation. Each year, participating alumni receive a fundraising mailing and phone call from the Foundation. Additions and corrections to the alumni lists come from various sources including calls to the association from alumni, mailings made from the Alumni Association with return address and forwarding address requests, and information sent from the individual colleges and schools to the association.
The Department also collects information about alumni though informal contacts, Internet research, Departmental events and periodic surveys.
6 Alumni
Online survey: For this report, the Department obtained spreadsheets of the most up-to-date alumni contact information (including available e-mail addresses) from the Foundation to use for sending out online surveys. Incorrect e-mail addresses were removed from the list and additional known e-mail addresses of recent graduates were added. Links to online surveys of alumni, students and local professionals were e-mailed to individuals in July 2009. The alumni survey, included in Appendix 10.6, was used to gather information about current employment and significant accomplishments. This information, combined with personal knowledge of alumni positions, accomplishments, etc., was entered into a spreadsheet and used to create the tables in Sections 6.3 and 6.5.
Informal contact: In addition to the more formal procedures, the faculty and alumni share an interest in each other’s whereabouts and professional activities. We consider ourselves a community of professionals and friends. As a result, members of the faculty maintain contact with many alumni through informal correspondence, email, meetings and phone conversations.
Lecture series announcements and College newsletter: Alumni on the Department’s e-mail and mailing lists receive a flyer announcing the College’s lecture series each semester. The College is also developing a quarterly e-mail newsletter including articles about happenings in each department and updates from the Dean of the College.
6.5 ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS Describe the range of professional accomplishments achieved by program graduates. Professional accomplishments include achieving licensure or CLARB certification, publications, service to the profession or to the program, scholarly recognition, attaining positions of responsibility, receiving professional awards, etc. should be included. Highlight accomplishments of alumni from last five years.
The following tables reflect the significant accomplishments of Program alumni. The first table covers accomplishments of recent graduates (2004-2009); the second shows those who graduated before 2004. The information shown here is a combination of answers to online surveys and personal knowledge of members of the Department.

6.6 ALUMNI INPUT Describe efforts to elicit alumni reactions to past and present programs and to distribute current information of interest to them. Describe how alumni input is used in program evaluation. Describe how alumni participate in the program (jurors, advisory boards, donations, teaching, etc.).
Distributing Information to Alumni A variety of formal and informal mechanisms are used at both the College and Department levels to keep alumni informed of improvements and changes in the Programs.
Lecture Series Posters: Each semester, the College sends a poster describing upcoming lectures at the College to all alumni in Colorado, as well as to the offices of many landscape architecture practitioners in the Denver area.
Articles in CCASLA Newsletter: Updates on faculty and student work, faculty-written articles and achievements are often included in Rocky Mountain Exposures (see Appendix 10.6), the bimonthly newsletter of the Colorado Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. These regular mailings offer an opportunity for to inform members of the professional design community of program activities and accomplishments.
College and Department Websites: The College maintains an Internet website under the aegis of the University that provides a wide array of information about goings-on and policies in the College and in the Department. Part of the website describes current news and events.
Alumni Input in Program Evaluation Alumni help the Department evaluate program effectiveness in the following ways:
• Landscape Architecture Advisory Board: In March 2003, the Chair formally constituted the Landscape Architecture Advisory Board. Membership consists of Landscape Architecture practitioners, many of whom are program alumni, practitioners from related fields of architecture, planning and engineering, current students and “clients.” This group is charged with discussing the wide array of landscape issues of local, regional and national importance and their relationship to the education of landscape architects. This group played an important role in reviewing and advising the faculty about the Program’s mission, curriculum, particularly its course sequence, and plans for improving the program. Program alumni who are members of the Advisory Board, including Jane Kulik and Meredith Schildwachter, are quite critical to the Board (and profession) and offer many effective suggestions for Program improvement. Ideas, suggestions, concerns, and accolades when earned, are transmitted back to the program faculty and students. The Advisory Board usually convenes once each semester, meeting with the Chair and members of the faculty.
Alumni SER survey: During the summer of 2009, the Department solicited feedback from local practitioners, current students and alumni on the Program’s strengths and weaknesses, and recommendations for improvement. The online alumni survey was sent to 211 valid alumni e-mail addresses and received a total of 58 responses, a response rate of 27.5%. Of the 154 alumni who graduated between fall 2003 and spring 2009, the Department had 122 valid e-mail addresses (representing 80% of that cohort), and of these alumni, 38 (24.5%) responded to the survey. This survey feedback provided the Department with valuable qualitative information about perceptions of the Program from recent alumni. Members of the faculty discussed the results of the surveys at a faculty meeting and plan to take alumni comments and recommendations into consideration during future discussions about the curriculum.
17 Alumni
Informal Input: In addition to the methods above, alumni provide members of the faculty with informal feedback on their perceptions of the Program and the quality of its graduates.
Alumni Participation in the Program The Department views alumni input as extremely valuable in helping to develop and shape the program in directions that respond to our stated mission and philosophy. Alumni participate in the Program in the following ways:
Studio Critics and Jurors: Program alumni participate in the delivery and evaluation of design studios. Faculty frequently invite alumni into their respective studios to talk with students about their own projects, give desk crits, provide feedback during pin-up sessions, and to participate in mid-term and end-of-semester juries. In addition, Program alumni, especially those working locally, often assist studio instructors by providing base maps, data, and in making strategic contacts with “clients” and municipal officials for studio field trips.
Teaching: Program alumni teach in the program. In recent years, alumni Matthew ‘Quint’ Redmond, Leila Tolderlund, Brian Cook and Robby Layton were hired as Lecturers to deliver courses reflective of their areas of expertise. Other alumni such as Leanne Duncan and Jill Gaschler provide technical construction instruction as guest lecturers and critics in Lois Brink’s Learning Landscape classes.
Guest Lectures: Program alumni, particularly distinguished alumni, speak in Department-sponsored lectures. During Fall Term 2008, ASLA President Angela Dye, FASLA, MLA ’84, presented her recent works and spoke with students about the profession.
Lecture Series: Program alumni are invited through mailings and e-mail to the College’s Lecture Series and other public events sponsored by either the College or Department.
Donations: Program alumni have begun to make financial contributions to the program for scholarships and program development. This is an area that needs to be developed to a much greater extent.
Mentorships and Internships: Program alumni in local firms and agencies participate in the Program by serving as mentors and providing internships for students.
