60 Years of Creating a Path to a Brighter Future

Page 2: 60 Years of Creating a Path to a Brighter Future

Message from Executive Director and Board PresidentAs we enter our 60th year, AchieveKids is proud of our history and accomplishments. We are passionate in applying our expertise and positively impacting the lives of our students and energized by our vision for the future. During the last year we have seen our schools earn full accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, we have experienced great outcomes for students in our transition system redesign, and seen an overall enhancement in our student growth through our Learning for Life program.

Turning 60 has us looking to our future. We want to increase our impact across the communities we serve and we strive to be a resource and place of learning for any family that may need our support. AchieveKids is dedicated to being thought leaders and innovating for enhanced outcomes and independence for the students we serve. Entering into a new year we are embarking on our strategic planning process, focusing on setting the strategy for the goals above. We appreciate the feedback and insight provided to us by our partners, families, districts, and community members to better understand the impact we create and the needs that continue to exist.

Our families, educational professionals, donors, and community volunteers each contribute to our ability to meet the individual needs of our students, helping them to find greater opportunity. We thank you for your commitment to AchieveKids and our students, helping us to reach our goals so that we can continue to Create a Path to a Brighter Future.

Page 3: 60 Years of Creating a Path to a Brighter Future

At 6 years old Theo is our youngest student at AchieveKids. He struggled with disruptive, aggressive and non-compliant behaviors before coming to our school. He would get frustrated easily and begin to cry, whine and stomp his feet.

Since attending AchieveKids for the past 10 months Theo has vastly improved his ability to keep his body safe and participate in a classroom setting. Now he is generally polite and curious about the world. We rely on Theo to show kindness to his peers, especially to one of our students that is more impaired than the rest of our classroom.

Theo loves science topics and one of his favorites was a unit his class just completed on bacteria and first aid. “I love bacteria” he said. Theo can work calmly now on fourth grade spelling words and composes multiple sentences in response to a prompt. His parents have expressed appreciation to our staff for the difference his time at AchieveKids has made in his ability to participate in home and family life. Theo still has many skills to work on but our staff are very proud of his achievements so far. A great example of AchieveKids Creating a Path to a Brighter Future for our students and their families.

Reach for the StarsFestival, Celebrate the Season

Our 36th annual Festival was held in early December. A great way to kick off the holiday season. Our guests were treated to a presentation from our Room 11 students of “Rise Up” by Andrea Day. Perla Rodriguez-Arroyo, our second

endowed scholarship winner, talked about what our scholarship means to her and her experiences at AchieveKids. This year all of the net proceeds from Festival will be deposited in our Endowment fund, ensuring our programs are built to last for years to come.

International Learning Exchange TourIn March, three of our staff took part in an international learning exchange tour. In partnership with Therapy Focus in Perth Australia, they had the opportunity to visit Perth, explore educational and related service providers, and attend an Autism conference. At the same time we hosted two professionals from Therapy Focus who attended the Stanford Autism Conference. It was an amazing learning opportunity and something that grows our perspective and approach to meeting the needs of our communities’ most complex learners.

Reach for the StarsThe eighth annual Reach for the Stars BBQ was successful thanks to our crowd of 150 community supporters and staff. We raised over $58,000! Everyone had an opportunity to visit some of our classrooms and learn about our programs and hear from three of our staff who spent time in Perth, Australia on our international learning exchange tour.

Our STAR award was presented in memory of Doug Barton for his longstanding commitment to AchieveKids. One of the highlights of the evening was listening to Deepan, a twin brother of a current student,

and his mother Claudia address our guests. “I will say this. What does a “good life” look like? I think it’s one in which a person has both purpose and community. AchieveKids is that for my Darshan” said Claudia.

Bike to the Beach Thanks to Jefferson Bradshaw for riding on behalf of AchieveKids in the Bike to the Beach century ride. This ride benefits Autism Awareness in local communities across the United States. Jefferson came in first place and AchieveKids received $5,000 to benefit our programs.

Ofir started at AchieveKids in August, 2017 at the age of 15. He is nonverbal was was having a difficult time ex-pressing his needs. At his pre-vious school he had tantrums and was not able to engage in any activity without super-vision. He would elope fre-quently.

Since being at AchieveKids his tantrums have dimin-ished. Ofir is a very happy kid, extremely friendly with lots of energy. He is learn-ing to express his needs and feels very comfortable at school. He enjoys being outdoors and is highly motivated to follow directions when food is involved. He is learning

math skills by sorting silverware and plac-ing the utensils in the correct container. Ofir practices using his Ipad to answer questions about his name, age, birthday, and address. He really likes the stu-dents and the staff and AchieveKids has be-come a safe haven for him.

Our future goals for Ofir are independence with his daily living skills, personal hygiene, and preparing food for him-self. We are actively Creating a Path to a Brighter Future for Ofir and his family.

In Memoriam:AchieveKids lost one of our board members in January, 2020.Nancy Kalkbrenner joined our board in 2014. She served on our endowment committee and was very active in spreading the word about the importance of our endowment fund. Near and dear to her heart was Festival of Trees. She was instrumental in planning this event long before joining our board. Nancy always had a smile on her face and a kind word to say and was genuinely liked by our staff as well as our board. She will be sorely missed.
