Bulletin Reflection for September 9, 2018

Blindness and deafness usually refer to a physical condition; the loss of

sight and the inability to hear clearly. However the references to these conditions in our readings today are a metaphor for blindness to God’s ways and our inability to hear His Word. Sometimes blindness is not so much our inability to see but the fact that what we see too often is the wrong thing. For instance if all we see is violence in the news and watch vio-lence in our TV programming we may very well become blind to the many good things that are happening in the world and that real entertainment has very little to do with vi-olent crime. Perhaps we need to change the station. Our hearts work the same way. Too much exposure to the bad things of the world makes us become jaded and we begin to see the world as totally bad where only bad things are happening. The same is with our hearing. Our deafness may be really to God speaking to us in the experiences of our lives. God speaks to us in our hearts but oftentimes we’ve been lis-tening to the wrong things for so long we don’t recognize Him speaking to us through the good things that are happening around us. Our Gospels are “Good News”. What does that mean? Read through the four gospels and you will see and hear words that celebrate life. Words that bring comfort and solace. Sto-ries of people caring for each other. Yes, we do hear the negative stories of betrayal, des-pair and illness. However the “good news” is that we are not alone. We hear stories of people being uplifted by their faith in God and following Jesus as his disciples. We hear Christ telling us that faith and love of God is key to dealing with our challenges of life. Love of God can only be shown by love of neighbor. Jesus refused no one who sought his help. His neighbor was anyone who came to him and sought his help. Sinners, tax collec-tors and the sick are God’s children. We are called to be the examples of Christ. Our lack of sight and hearing are the result of the bombardment of information that tells us sto-ries that our neighbors are not the people in this world seeking help because they are poor, homeless and without a country. In fact, these are exactly the neighbors Jesus is talking about that we should be helping. How can we say we are Christian and followers of Christ when we think that people in this world need to be walled out of this country by laws, and red tape. Walls that prevent them from coming to this country to seek a bet-ter life for them and their families. Love of God and Love of Neighbor! One cannot exist without the other. Deacon Frank

Dear kids and parents, The youth choir here at OLOV has had some wonderful successes the last couple of years. However, last season in particular was extra special when members of our youth choir sang at the NBC 30 televised tree light-ing in New Haven after having won a statewide competition earning them this honor! This past June the entire choir sang a televised Mass for the Archdiocese of Hartford. They did a tremendous job and Our Lady of Victory could not have been better represented. They also had the opportunity to spend an afternoon in a master class with an Off-Broadway per-former who worked with them and gave them some wonderful tips on vocal production and musical presentation. We as a parish are extremely fortunate to have some wonderfully talented young singers. I know there are more of you out there-Those of you who love to do your school musicals and/or love to sing in chorus! There is also a place for those of you who play an instrument! Prayerfully consider being a part of this winning musical team! Rehearsals are on Tuesdays be-ginning September 11th in the church from 5-6 (sometimes a little past). We sing the second Sunday of each month at the 11 am Mass. Come sing, learn, make friends and have fun! Sincerely, Ed Perez Music Director Dear Friends, "Music ministry provides beauty, joy, comfort, inspiration, and musical prayer for our communal liturgies and various parish celebrations. This is possible due to the generous sharing of time and talent of diverse and committed members. If you can carry a tune and want to learn, come sing with us." Rehearsals for this season begin on Wednesday September 5. Our Lady of Victory Choir is a dedicated group of people that meet Wednesday evenings from 7-9 for rehearsal and sing at the 11 am Mass on Sundays. There is a brief warm up and review prior to Mass beginning at 10:30. The choir is scheduled at other parish celebrations as well. For more infor-mation or details please contact me - Ed Perez- at the rectory 203 934 6357 or see me or a choir member after Mass Sincerely, Ed Perez, music director

BULLETIN ADVERTISER OF THE WEEK We wish to acknowledge and thank

Keenan Funeral Home (203) 933-1217

for their support of our parish as well as providing the yearly calendars

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Back to work we go! Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It's a venerable Catholic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican de-clares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you're stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cupertino is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you're in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS patients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Anything that matters to us--nation, parish church, occu-pation, illness--can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the "communion of saints" is to know that the ties that bind us as a communion do not un-ravel with death, and that when we stand before life's struggles, we do not stand alone. Who is your patron saint?

Coffee an’ after the 7:30am Thank you Mass for Fr. Collins on September 3rd God Bless you Father Collins as you begin your new assignment at

St. Patrick’s Church in Collinsville. It was a pleasure having you at Our Lady of Victory these past fourteen months.
