December 2014 Issue No.32 Copies are available for downloading from our website NOTE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR Welcome to our Summer Edition. It is hard to believe that it is summer and three months since my European holiday, time really flies! Speaking of flies , last month we had lunch outside in the back courtyard and one of the members noticed that there were no flies, in fact last time we tried to eat outside we couldn’t because of other flying insects- the wasps. We all really enjoyed eating outside in the fresh air, we saw butterflies and birds and the smells from the flowers were also appreciated. The neighbours were quiet for a change, no mowers or blowers, and no renovating or building noises either, most pleasant. (too bad it didn’t last long!) Another pleasant memory is the Spring Dance which was held in September. As expected it was a great success, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Lyn, the daughter of one of our members, presented us with the photos on a CD and then showed it to all our groups. Everyone who was there said a few words and those who didn’t attend said they would come next year. So now the planning begins for next year’s dance, I have already booked the hall. One job done, 99 to go! I have some good news for the Thursday program members, starting in January the hours will be extended by half an hour to 3pm, so we will have 4 hours of fun. Soon after I returned from my holiday and one month after the dance we held an Aborigianl week followed by Hungarian week. During this time Bill made what he believed to be Hungarian food, but I did not have the heart to tell him that presenting food in the red white and green stripes does not make it Hungarian! However the meals did look nice. We had lots of interesting things to look at, from souvenirs to maps and folk crafts; we also tasted Hungarian ginger bread and champagne. I then presented an arm chair travel talk on my visit to Serbia, Hungary and Romania. It was a good way for me to reminisce and relive my trip so I really appreciated it. However, after the 5 th presentation I started getting a bit bored but I had to press on as my audience had not seen or heard it yet. Thanks everyone for your positive feedback. We now eagerly await Bronwen’s talk on her 2 months holiday in Europe. The spring months were full of fun themes and activities, well, that is what I have been told. I have not had any complaints so I believe the staff kept everyone well fed, entertained, and exercised while I was away. Carer’s week was celebrated in October. We celebrated a 101 st birthday as well as many others but it was lovely to be able to share such a milestone. Next we have the lead up to Christmas activities and preparations that finish with a week of parties. Bill has already set the menu which promises to be traditional and delicious. On behalf of the staff of the John Macrae Centre I would like to wish all our readers, volunteers, supporters and their families a safe and happy Christmas. May 2015 be a year of happy memories for us all. Katrina Szabo
