    Council Members Conti, Krasher, Applyrs, Bailey, Doesschate, Fahey, Flynn, Golby,

    Herring, Igoe, Kimbrough, offered the following:

    RESOLUTION NUMBER 60.62.16R(MC)

    RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ALBANY COMMON COUNCIL MOURNING THELOSS OF LIFE AS A RESULT OF THE HORRIFIC ACT OF HATE AND TERROR

    AGAINST THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING

    THE HEROISM OF THOSE WHOSE ACTIONS PREVENTED THE LOSS OF

    ADDITIONAL LIFE AND EXPRESSING THE CITY OF ALBANYS SYMPATHIES TO

    THE ORLANDO COMMUNITY

    WHEREAS on June 12, 2016 revelers gathered at Pulse, a popular nightclub for the LGBTQ

    community in Orlando, Florida, to celebrate LGBTQ Pride and Latino Night; and

    WHEREAS a hate-fueled gunman entered Pulse that night and violently murdered forty-nine

    individuals and inflicted physical harm to fifty-three others; and

    WHEREAS this horrific hate crime is recorded as the largest mass shooting in our nations

    history; and

    WHEREAS this horrific hate crime occurred during the month of June, which is Pride Month

    and a time of joyous celebration for the LGBTQ community marking the 1969 Stonewall Riots

    which gave birth to the modern day movement for LGBTQ human rights; and

    WHEREAS residents of the Capital District have marked this tragic event with solemn vigils in

    several communities including Albany, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady and Troy; and

    WHEREAS City of Albany residents are working together to raise funds to support the needs of

    victims and their families; and

    WHEREAS this murderous act has deprived our community of the lives of forty-nine individuals

    whose talents and contributions to the world will never be realized; and

    WHEREAS most of the victims of this crime were Latino and people of color; and

    WHEREAS this event also has heroes among those members of the community who acted to

    save lives and prevent further tragedy, including first responders, public safety officers andmembers of the health care community; and

    WHEREAS the Capital District, and the City of Albany Common Council in particular, has a

    long history of honoring and celebrating the LGBTQ community and its contributions tosociety; and

    WHEREAS this body has recognized the important work of the Pride Center of the Capital

    Region and In Our Own Voices which are providing support to the LGBTQ community during

    this challenging time; and

    WHEREAS the events in Orlando are felt particularly by the LGBTQ here in the Capital District

    and worldwide; and

    WHEREAS as we mourn the tragic loss of life in Orlando we will never give into hate and

    violence which seeks to deprive us of our freedom and human rights;

    NOW, THEREFORE BE IT REOLVED that this legislative body pauses in its deliberations to

    express our deepest condolences to the Orlando community and to the families, friends and loved

    ones most impacted by this tragedy; and

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we mourn the loss of: Stanley Almodovar III, 23 years old,

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the names and memories of those slain will forever be

    remembered; and

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this legislative resolution, suitably engrossed, be

    transmitted to the Mayor of the City of Orlando, the City Council of Orlando and the LGBTQ

    Community Center of the City of Orlando as an expression of the solidarity of the People of theCity of Albany with the People of the City of Orlando.
