Welcome to the May edition of S40 Local.

Hope you've had a good Easter and are looking forward to the two bank holidays in May.

One of the articles this month talks about the Whit Walk in Chesterfield, a Chesterfield tradition for over 160 years and one of the biggest in the country... it's also something, that I knew nothing about - thank you to Chris Townsend for sharing the information.

Last month we featured cinema at the Pomegrante and as a result of what we'd found out, went along to a Saturday morning viewing of Big Hero 6. We thoroughly enjoyed the screening and were really impressed, a lovely environment and a great alternative to national cinema chains.

This edition feels fairly business focused for the sole reason that lots of people have news they wanted to share. It's great news for the area that local businesses are making changes, expanding, adapting and improving. I hope you find it interesting finding out what's going on, who's doing what and consider giving them a go.

STOP PRESS: A last minute item that missed the cut... watch this space for news of the Brampton Bicycle Club. I'm involved and will bring you news about a local cycling club for children. Running regular coaching sessions we hope to inspire youngsters to spend more time on their bike by offering a sample of the fun to be had on two wheels.

Things are still work in progress but we are planning to hold the first sessions in June. We need people to help, and kids to come along, so if you're interested in lending a hand or if you've got kids who can ride, who are interested, please get in touch (contact details on the right). Our first session will be at Holmebrook Valley Park on Thursday 18 June.

Ryan pulled on his England jersey for the first time over Easter, at an International Tournament in the winter sports resort of Zell am See, Austria.

Ryan Apsley from Brookfield Community School, plays ice hockey with Sutton Sting, and has been selected to represent England at the Under 14 level. He pulled on his England jersey for the first time over Easter, at an International Tournament in the winter sports resort of Zell am See, Austria.

In Austria Ryan scored his first England goal and the team did really well in the World Tournament finishing 4th out of 12 teams which is a great achievement given our national standing. Ryan's next big test is playing for Midlands Conference Under 15's at Sheffield in the EIHA's inter-conference tournament at the beginning of May.

Club Head Coach Rob Saunders was full of praise for his young star and said. “Ryan has been with the Club for quite a few years now and although he is only fourteen years old he has more than nine year's experience playing ice hockey.” He explained “He is reaping the rewards of dedication and hours upon hours of practice time at the rink and I am thrilled that once again we have Sutton players being selected alongside some of the best talent in the Country.”

Ryan plays right-wing with Sutton Sting in Sutton in Ashfield, in the under 14’s and under 16’s teams and is naturally excited about selection in his favoured position for Team England. “It’s a great honour for anyone to represent your Country” said Apsley. “And for the Sting too” he continued “playing for England is not like playing for your Club. The standard is higher and the game is a lot faster.” Ryan was keen to point out the support he receives from Sutton Sting “We have great coaches at the Sting and they have helped

Ryan joins the EIHA elite athlete development programme, which provides a progression pathway of support for athletes up to GB’s under 18s teams. Sting Head Coach Saunders added. “We have worked hard at Sutton Sting to establish a programme that caters for the novice club player as well as meeting the high performance demands from the Midlands Conference and Team England programmes. I have seen quite a few of our talented athletes make the step-up from the Sting into the Midlands Conference teams initially and then on to England and Great Britain teams which makes me proud of what we have achieved over the past nine years since we started the Club.”

Sutton Sting offers a Learn to Skate session on Saturday mornings which is run in collaboration with Everyone Active at the Lammas Leisure Centre, progressing through Learn to Play and up to teams competing in the EIHA’s league system.

More than 600 kids have passed through Sutton Sting in the last nine years and the Club has delivered far above their own aspirations. As the current season draws to a close, the future looks really bright for the 2012 Nottinghamshire Club of the Year and with opportunities for children from 5 years old, it is a great time to get your skates on in Sutton.

S40 Local HQ, West Studios, is getting involved in Craft and Design Magazine's Design Month. It's been driven by Gwin Kerry, Sarah Pasley and Deborah Langner designers and West Studio residents and will run right through May, to celebrate the opening of the building and encourage people to come and have a look around and meet the people who work there.

There are 16 tenants in West Studios practicing art in a wide variety of mediums from; graphic design and ceramics to encaustic art (painting with melted wax), street furniture and sculpture.

Tenants were asked to produce a piece of artwork inspired by the building in which they work. The resulting pieces will form the exhibition, which runs in West Studios from Friday 8 May to Friday 29 May. It's open to the public and you are more than welcome to come along and take a look.

Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May will be an open studios event, giving you the opportunity to take a look around and chat to the artists. You could even call in and see where S40 Local is produced!

West Studios is situated in Chesterfield College's West Block (The old Grammar School), behind the gates at the Sheffield Road entrance and has been refurbished thanks to European Regional Development Funding. The new space converted old class rooms into four contemporary work spaces with a shared meeting room, studio and reception, which also doubles as a shop and gallery space, where artists can display and sell their work. Drinks and cakes are available in the coffee shop where Jake, Hannah and Joby are on hand.

Spring Bank Holiday weekend has become synonymous with the annual Open Studios event organised by Derbyshire Open Arts. Unfortunately this year, the event is taking a break.

Luckily for us, close to home local Derbyshire artists will continue to exhibit work under the banner of ‘Holymoorside and Walton Arts Festival’, at Holymoorside Village Hall.

The venue will be open from Saturday 23 to Monday 25 May, from 11am to 5pm Saturday; 10am to 5pm Sunday; 10am to 4pm Monday and host 12 artists – below.

You’ll find a mix of art and crafts including paintings, hand pulled prints, artists' books, photography, ceramics, textiles and stained glass. A number of artists will also be demonstrating their work; Olinda Everett, a ceramicist, will encourage a ‘hands on approach’ to visitors, portrait artist Caroline McFarlane will be offering ‘on the spot’ portraits for £8, Trudy Roe will be working on a Coptic book with a decorative stitched spine, Lesley Nason will show how to make ceramic tree pendants and wall pieces and Jennie Merriman will create Elizabethan inspired embroidery slips using free machine techniques on water soluble film.

Back in 2009 when the decline of our pubs were making headline news, closing at a rate of 50 a week, Craig Lynch from The Manor (previously Brampton Manor) decided it would be a good time to buy into another pub!

“The bank manager wasn’t happy” remembers Craig, “but my view was if they keep closing at that rate, and I get it right, then there’s a good chance I’ll be the only one open!”

I can’t fault that positive thinking and five years on the Fox & Goose Inn on Pudding Pie Hill, Wigley continues to be a popular pub and venue.

“When we took on the pub it was a small tired village pub with very few people at the bar each night. I set about investing £250,000 in the pub. The bar was a small room, plus a snug, but immediately next to it was an old outbuilding and beyond that a three bedroom house.

“I converted and opened up the house and outbuildings, adding a new kitchen, restaurant area, private dining room (the old front room from the house) and orangery. The upstairs layout was also improved to include a function room to hold over 100 people.”

The result was a high quality dining pub. “We updated the original bar, but retained the charm of a traditional pub, and the ‘ramblers snug’ with stone floor, a welcome retreat for muddy booted walkers and their dogs is still intact.”

The new function room and dining space brought new opportunities and Craig applied for a wedding licence. “The Fox & Goose Inn became an instant success on the wedding

circuit. It’s a place where couples can tie the knot and then sit back with family and friends to enjoy the wedding breakfast. The surroundings are modern and comfortable, the views from up here are stunning and it offers some great photo opportunities.”

“The food at the Fox & Goose Inn has been recognised by Westside Magazine as Best Out of Town restaurant, beating off competition from the whole of Sheffield and North Derbyshire. Aside from the panoramic views from the Orangery and Dining Terrace one factor that set us apart from other out of town venues was the complimentary shuttle service provided for parties of 6 or more.”

“We’ve made some additional changes recently, installing new booths in the restaurant and upgrading the decor to remain at the top end of quality pub dining in the region” explains Craig.

“We also hired a great new head chef, Dan Box, a local lad from Doe Lea who trained at

What a difference it made in Bella’s life! Jo Linthwaite @ Kip McGrath

Bella arrived at Kip in Chesterfield at the end of May 2014. She was completing Year 10, her first year of her GCSEs and had fallen far behind her classmates. She lacked the confidence to ask questions in class when she didn’t understand and used that tried and tested method of being well behaved in order to keep under the radar!

Her free assessment showed that Bella had a maths level of a Year 3 student and was 7 years behind many of her classmates. She struggled with basic functions such as long multiplication, long division, times tables and had complete sections of the maths syllabus missing such as basic geometry and algebra. Jo put together a plan to work on improving her basic maths skills at the same time as taking a look at filling in some of the gaping holes in the GCSE topics.

Amazingly in only 3 weeks, that’s only 3 sessions, Bella’s confidence had improved markedly. Her maths teacher commented on the change in her outlook as well as a noticeable improvement in her scores. After another week, her teacher wrote a letter home to say how impressed she was with the turnaround! Her second assessment at Christmas showed that

Bella had improved by 2 years in less than six months! After her New Year maths exam, Jo and Bella’s school maths teacher worked together to further fine tune her learning programme and it now includes geometry, area, number planes and algebra!

Running up to the exam season, Bella continues to improve and actively asks to work on new topics. Whatever result she achieves in June, she has been able to prove to herself that she IS capable and can face the future with confidence, and her school maths teacher continues to tell other students about Kip and how Jo has helped Bella. When the results come through in August Bella’s family and Bella will be very, very proud of her, and of course with a good result Bella’s career options open up so much more!

If you search for Whit Walks on the Internet, you’d think it was confined to the North West. It may have originated in Manchester, but it’s one hundred and sixty five years ago that the idea of a Whit Walk was first proposed in Chesterfield.

Although for all churches, just four Sunday Schools took part in the first gatherings, but it was to be the start of something big, as you can see from the photos!

Today over thirty churches take part in what is now one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the country. The ‘Whit Walk’ or Procession of Witness (to give the event its official title) has become part of the Spring Bank Holiday scene in Chesterfield.

On Spring Bank Holiday Monday 25 May, hundreds will gather in front of The Town Hall to be welcomed by The Mayor and Mayoress before setting off on a circular route, around the town taking in Knifesmithgate, Cavendish Street, Saltergate, Newbold Rd, Queen Street, Tennyson Avenue and Rose Hill East. Good sized crowds line the route to watch as the Procession passes.

In 1890 a band joined the Chesterfield Whit Walk for the first time, a tradition that’s continued. This year the Procession includes marching bands, such as the award winning Chesterfield Musketeers, decorated floats depicting this year’s theme ‘Love Your Neighbour’, illustrated banners, a mobile music roadshow and of course lots and lots of people from the churches dressed in the theme colours of orange, white and yellow, giving away balloons and goodie bags to children in the crowd.

Why all this activity on a Bank Holiday? The churches are witnessing their faith in Jesus who at ‘Whitsuntide’ nearly two thousand years ago, sent His Holy Spirit into the world to empower his disciples. It’s a Christian celebration and Whitsuntide was a week of festivities following the Feast of Pentecost (the seventh Sunday after Easter).

One of the most frequently asked questions is ‘What happens if it rains?’ Answer: ‘We get wet.’ After 165 years it takes more than a drop of rain to stop this spectacular Chesterfield tradition!

If you’d like to join the procession or watch from the roadside the timing below will help you to get to the right place at the right time.

You may have noticed a new business on Chatsworth Road. Once a terraced house near Morrisons it’s now the home of Brampton Natural Therapy Centre, a therapy centre offering Osteopathy, Hypnotherapy, Fertility and conception treatment, Hypnobirthing and Massage therapy and other natural therapies.

It’s the new premises of Robin and Ellena Outram, previously called Moorland Natural Therapy Centre, they changed their name to better suit their new location.

It’s the latest change for Robin, whose career changing moment came ten years ago. Robin explained “I went along for treatment on my back and was chatting to my Surrey based osteopath, who’d been an air stewardess. Under the desk sat a chocolate Labrador and I thought ‘any job where I can make people feel so well after treatment and take my dog to work is worth looking at’.

Robin gave up his job in IT, went to Oxford to retrain in Osteopathy and qualified in 2009. He moved back to Chesterfield with his wife and brought his father-in-law up from South-East London and the family started to expand.

Working from home it wasn’t long before work was getting in the way of family life. “I was working from home in Walton on Redgrove Way and needed to improve access to the treatment room so started looking at extending. My wife Ellena, who’d also made a career change, previously a contracts manager at Thames water, retrained in hypnotherapy after being inspired by the support she received during our first child’s birth!” says Robin.

“With us both offering therapies and treatments we needed premises and found 349 Chatsworth Road in January this year. Following a complete refurbishment of the property we opened for business on 2 February. We celebrated by inviting the Mayor to cut the ribbon, had some drinks and nibbles and offered some free treatments.”

“By offering a range of disciplines at the centre we’re able to offer more holistic support.”

In the osteopathy field Robin specialises in lower back problems “symptoms can be as adverse as hand and feet problems, headaches which can be attributed to back problems and general poor function of the body”.

“I’ve treated people from six weeks to 95 years old, babies suffering from colic, restlessness, sleep problems and so much more, many people turn to osteopathy for help.”

“Physiotherapy considers muscles, chiropractors focus on bone structure but I think that osteopathy sits in the middle. We’re able to assess and diagnose, other disciplines need others to diagnose before referring for treatment.”

“Hypnotherapy is great for weight loss, birth, fear controls, phobias, giving up smoking etc, it’s a long list” says Robin. “We’ve now started to offer reflexology after additional training. All Ellena’s skills can be used for pregnancy and it’s an area we’re keen to offer as a specialism.”

“The new centre also offers sports therapist services, a chiropodist is coming on board with 30 years’ experience and they’re looking for other people to get involved who can offer complementary services to those already available.”

It was good to catch up with Robin and see how the business is expanding. I like to think that some of this is down to those of you who have seen his adverts in S40 Local, picked up the phone and made an appointment. For this both Robin and I would like to pass on our thanks.

It’s 149,500,000 km away, yet by harnessing its energy, we can generate our own clean affordable energy.

The sun’s power is obviously free, but to convert it into usable energy requires solar panels and electronics. The government incentivise solar energy installations through the ‘feed in tariff’ subsidy scheme, where you get paid a set rate for the energy generated and fed back into the national grid. Over the past four years this tariff rate has been reduced on numerous occasions, but this also resulted in a dramatic decrease in the cost of the equipment, making installations much more affordable. Plus over the last few years the equipment has become much more efficient. Today solar energy installations

are achieving a 10% per annum return on investment from feed-in tariff payments and savings, typically amounting to between £700 and £900 per annum.

I’m meeting local solar energy installers and electricians, Simon Smith and Simon Currie from Eco Logic Electrical to understand a little more.

“Many people think the feed in tariff has gone completely and they've missed the boat” explains Simon S.

“A typical customer is looking to reduce their financial outgoings and achieve a good return from a secure investment. At today’s rates, the returns on solar are significantly better than interest rates offered by the banks, and feed in tariff payments are still guaranteed for 20 years, index linked and tax free. “The tariffs fell from 43p to 14p but install prices also fell from £20k plus to £7k for similar systems” says Simon S. “We’ve just finished an install this week and the estimated return is 11.7% PA” adds Simon C. “It will pay for itself in 8 years after which they’ll make £876 profit every year for the remainder of the 20 year feed in tariff agreement.”

Solar energy is a safe, sustainable and renewable product, helping achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions. It also offers some independence from major corporations and protection against future energy price increases.

The tariffs will probably be removed for new installations at some point in the future, but until that time your feed in tariff

on a new installation would be guaranteed for 20 years.

“We’ve done over 60 installations locally over the past four years” says Simon S, “we’ve worked in Chesterfield and around the Peak District. I’m a fully qualified electrician and live in Walton, it’s really important I do jobs well, word spreads quickly in Chesterfield and I like to think it’s all positive.

“Alongside me there’s Ash who recently qualified and I’ve taken on Ben as apprentice, Vicky looks after my admin and

Simon looks after sales – it’s growing into a nicely manageable business.”

“We recently did an install for a Mr Barker, who admitted to being a bit sceptical. He invested in solar and is using the surplus solar energy to heat hot water. He recently told me he’s ‘thrilled to bits’ with his install - it’s great when you get unsolicited feedback like that.”

60 years ago, on 1 May 1955, the scene was being set and preparations were being made for the start of The Mille Miglia (Thousand Miles), an iconic open-road endurance race in Italy.One of the drivers in the line-up was Britain’s own Stirling Moss.Moss, then 25 years old, drove one of four factory-entered Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR sports-racing cars. Based on the W196 Grand Prix car, producing just 310bhp from the 3ltr engine, the main rivals being the four factory-entered Ferraris.Journalist Denis Jenkinson, Moss's navigator, came up with the idea of pace notes, in the form of a roller map of the route for noting hazards, the first pace notes known of. This innovation helped Moss compete against drivers with greater local knowledge. Radio communication was ineffective, because Moss was oblivious to Jenkinson's voice when concentrating on his driving.Jenkinson used hand signals to guide Moss along the road ahead. The race was timed, and competitors started singly at one-minute intervals. Moss's

Mercedes left the starting ramp in Brescia at 7:22 am (hence the car's race number 722). The race wasn’t without event, Moss colliding with straw bales to let Castellotti in a Ferrari past, the Ferrari later suffered tyre problems and retired.Nearing the Adriatic coast, Jenkinson's spectacles were blown off by the slipstream when he vomited over the side of the Mercedes, luckily he carried a replacement pair. Arriving in Rome, he and Moss were told they were leading but from then on had no way of knowing whether any of their rivals had gone ahead on elapsed time. Soon after Rome, close competitor Kling's race ended when he went off the road avoiding spectators and crashed into a tree.When Moss and Jenkinson finally arrived at the finish in Brescia they learned that Castellotti's Ferrari had retired with transmission trouble and they had won. Fangio, in a Mercedes took second place, nearly 33 minutes slower and Maglioli, in the sole surviving factory-entered Ferrari, took 45 minutes longer than Moss to finish third.Moss's time of 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48

A large tribute to Sir Stirling Moss adorns the gable end of the Noble Motorsport's building in the Chatsworth Business Park, just off Chatsworth Road.It was commissioned a number of years ago by Peter Dibble, managing director of Noble Motorsport Ltd one of his favourite images painted onto the building by local modern mural artist, Peter Barber.So 60 years on, why not remind yourself about Stirling’s victory at the Mille Miglia, it’s definitely worth a small detour into the Chatsworth Road Business Park to see the painting - it’s vast, it’s relevant and pays homage to a courageous Brit who took the world by storm. This year Noble Motorsport celebrate 40 years in business, in this time they've seen a lot of change but the experience of the team, their love of cars and with new technologies at their fingertips they are able to cope with everything both old and new.Strangely I enjoy taking my car to be serviced at Nobles, alongside the other family cars in for service or repair there’s always something interesting, exciting or different to look at.

On this visit a customer’s bright orange beach buggy was in for attention, next to a rather interesting Ford Mustang.Peter explained, “that’s my son George’s latest project, ‘Fred’, a 1968 Ford Mustang complete with Edelbrock head, narrowed back axle and a number of modifications, the straight through exhausts are worth a listen” he added. Fred was rolled out and fired up, what a noise, check out the video on S40 Local’s facebook site if you’re interested.

If you're lucky you might also get a glimpse of Peter's 1932 Wolsey Hornet Special which he's had since George was 7 years old. Used for the commute to work in the summer, it also appears at the local motor shows; Renishaw, Ashover and Sheffield Motor Club, some of which Noble sponsor.

Whilst you’re there it’s worth taking a look at the facilities and services Noble has to offer… it’s clean, easy to park, the team are friendly and they know what they’re doing. If Peter’s feeling generous you might even get a coffee!

Garden Tips

Being in the garden on a sunny May day has to be one of life's best experiences; the sun has real warmth and all around plants are shooting up. But a cautionary note: it’s still possible for there to be overnight frosts, especially in slightly more exposed areas, so be slightly cautious about putting out anything tender, or be prepared with some improvised shelter - it won’t need to be particularly robust as any frost will be light. The upside is that frost will only happen if the sky is clear, which makes for wonderful mornings…

1. Clumps of herbaceous perennials can be divided to ease congestion; hostas can be divided as they come into growth, and primroses once they finish flowering.

2. Thin out raspberry shoots and prune gooseberries. As always, the idea with this sort of job is make an open framework with an even distribution of fruiting stems all getting a good supply of sunlight and air (often easier said than done).

3. Lots of more tender vegetables can be sown now: french and runner beans, cucumbers, pumpkins (and squashes) as well as cauliflower and purple sprouting brocolli for harvesting in winter - they like a long growing season.

4. Later in the month, plant out summer bedding plants. These are available from garden centres, but are often displayed earlier than they should sensibly be planted out, so, if tempted, keep them in a shady place (protected from frost) and well watered until they can go into the open garden.

5. If you’ve already sown tomatoes and courgettes inside, they can now go outside. As upright (cordon) tomatoes grow, keep an eye open for any sideshoots that form in the angle between the main stem and branches and remove them. Towards the end of the month seeds for both can be sewn directly into the ground.

6. Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering, and remove any growth damaged by frost from evergreen shrubs. Check variegated ones for any where the leaves have reverted to plain green and remove those shoots completely.

7. Support peas with pea sticks, and prepare supports for any other plants (e.g. runner beans) that need them.

8. Lawns will now need regular mowing (use the clippings as a mulch), and keep on top of the weeding. Hedges will need clipping, but check for birds nests first, and If you’ve been feeding the birds in the winter, don’t stop – current thinking is that you should do it all year.

9. Garden pests will multiply rapidly in the warmer days, so check vunerable plants, especially vegetables, and take swift action to deal with them.

10. Keep sowing salad crops (radishes, spring onions, lettuce etc.) and herbs for regular harvesting.

On Thursday 14 May, volunteers from the NSPCC are hosting a presentation at St Thomas’ to raise awareness of their schools programme.

The NSPCC is the only children's charity fighting to end child abuse by; helping children who've been abused to rebuild their lives, protect children at risk and find the best ways of preventing child abuse from ever happening.

The session at St Thomas' aims to:

• Raise awareness of the NSPCC's Schools Service, where trained volunteers visit primary schools and deliver assemblies to help 9-11 year olds understand abuse in all its forms, and where to get help if they need it. They also return a week later to deliver an interactive workshop.

• Cover how parents can protect children when they’re online, part of the Share Aware campaign, launched to get families in Derbyshire talking about socialising safely online and is aimed at parents of 8 to 12 year old children. A key message being although children are taught that it's good to share, this is not always the case online.

• Provide information about the ChildLine service (0800 1111), which provides a safe, confidential place for children with no one else to turn to, whatever their worry, whenever they need help - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

• Raise awareness of the free helpline for adults for advice and support, share their concerns about a child or get general information about child protection - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on 0808 800 5000, by texting 88858 or visiting www.nspcc.org.uk

• Explain how people can get involved and volunteer their time, including becoming a ChildLine helpline counsellor.

At least three quarters of parents surveyed by the NSPCC found sexual, violent, or other inappropriate content on Sickipedia, Omegle, Deviant Art, and F my Life within half an hour of logging into commonly used social networking sites.

Those aimed at younger children, like Club Penguin, Moshi Monsters, Popjam and Bearville, fared better and parents did not find any unsuitable content on them.

One child who called ChildLine's Nottingham base, said: "I've always struggled to make friends so I started going online to speak to people. I met one person who I thought I had a lot in common with so we emailed all the time. After a few weeks they suggested we exchange phone numbers because it was easier. At first it was fine, but then things started to change. If I didn't message back immediately they'd send me nasty messages. I've started to dread turning my phone on!"

Toad Footwear Fundraising ThanksLaura from Toad would like to thank everyone who has helped with their recent fundraising activities. "We’ve been raising money for Myeloma UK, a charity that supports patients with the bone marrow cancer, Myeloma. My Dad has worked in this area for 12 years and we've set up a Just Giving page to raise money.

"In the shop we've been running a raffle all month to give customers the opportunity to win £1000 worth of shoes! The winner was drawn at the end of March and we also gave free shoes to ten runners up" says Laura.

"The majority of the brands we stock have come on board with donations, which has been absolutely fantastic. Brands such as Converse, Melissa Vivienne Westwood, Lacoste, Dr Martens, Timberland (plus many more) have donated shoes to the prize draw and we've been able to make one customer very happy" said Laura.

"More importantly though, all the proceeds of the raffle are going straight to Myeloma UK which is going to make a huge difference.

We also held a charity day on Saturday 14 March with drinks and lots of cakes to celebrate the cause.

"From all at Toad we'd really like to say a massive thank you to all the customers who came and donated."

Chesterfield Carnival 2015

Last year saw the relaunch of The Chesterfield Carnival by a small dedicated group, the previous event being in 1989. On 26 July last year people gathered at Stand Road to enjoy all the fun and games of the carnival and raising £2500 for Ashgate Hospicecare, a great total for the first event.

This year’s event on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July has a Super Hero theme and aims to raise at least £5000 towards Ashgate Hospice's urgent bed appeal.

Maria Davison, the driving force behind the event said “Chesterfield Community is one of inspiration and pride, everyone in the area has a super power and it is our challenge to unleash these super powers and help create another memorable event with two days of fun, pride, super heroes, spirit and most of all COMMUNITY”.

Emma's London Marathon 2015 Edale Mountain Rescue Fundraiser

Emma Bartram from, Holymoorside is running the London Marathon, for the Edale Mountain Rescue Team (EMRT), in fact by the time you read this it will all be behind her.

Edale Mountain Rescue operate in the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. Their principle aim is to rescue people from remote areas to save lives, and alleviate distress. Due to the large number of outdoor activities carried out in the area, coupled with the high

number of visitors, this makes it one of the busiest mountain rescue teams in the UK.

The volunteer team consisting of 50 members also assist the Derbyshire Constabulary in searches for missing vulnerable people, as well as regularly assisting the South Yorkshire Police, and both the East Midlands and Yorkshire Ambulance Services.

“With no central funding from the UK Government, and relying entirely upon donations I feel my effort is supporting a good cause” says Emma. “My brother Paul is a member so I see the dedication and efficiency of the team first-hand.”

Terminus Bowling ClubOpened by their first lady president

The Terminus Bowling Club was founded in 1913 on Chatsworth Road Brampton as an all male club, not allowing lady members until 2009, so it was a momentous occasion when in its 102nd year Peggy Fletcher was elected at the AGM, the Club’s first Lady President.

Peggy ‘officially’ opened the Green and ceremonially bowled the ‘Golden Bowl’ received from Andy Hoe, the outgoing President and welcomed 46 members on a cold Saturday afternoon and outlined the bowling activities available at the club this season.

“I look forward to welcoming new members and we’re keen to ensure everyone enjoys their time at the club” said Peggy. Following this the members were keen to take to the green for the first social bowling session of the new season.

Free taster sessions are available every Wednesday morning 10am until 11am and interested visitors are provided with bowls and coaching.
