“From the far-reaching problem of poor mater-nal health and weak health systems to the H1N1 flu, the current situation demands that we come together and strengthen our efforts. This means mobilizing all constituencies, better coordinating our actions and giving priority to health issues that remain relatively orphaned.”

“aDVanCe GloBal HealTH: aCHIeVe THe mDGS”30 august – 1 September 2010 melbourne – an Ideal City to Host the 63rd annual Un DPI/nGo Conference
Melbourne, Australia, situated on Port Phillip Bay, is the host city for this year’s 63rd Annual United Nations Conference for Non-Gov-ernmental Organizations associated with the Department of Pub-lic Information. Focusing on the theme “Advance Global Health: Achieve the MDGs,” the Conference is being organized by the UN Department of Public Information together with the Australian Government and the NGO/DPI Executive Committee.
This city, Australia’s most multicultural metropolis, is home to some 140 cultures, many of whose peoples came here through waves of migration dating back from the first people to the Euro-pean settlement, through the gold rush migrants from China and America to post-World War II migration from Southern and Eastern Europe to the more recent refugees from the Horn of Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
Melbourne is also home to a vibrant research community, which has been tackling many critical health issues. Today, research institutes in Melbourne continue to contribute to the fight against global killers including malaria, HIV, TB, gastroenteritis; hepatitis, and the leishmaniasis and papilloma viruses which cause cancer. Increasingly their focus is turning to chronic diseases that are reducing life spans in developed and developing countries alike. Diabetes and heart disease are also important health issues in Indigenous communities in Australia and across the island nations of the Pacific.
The United nations – Global Health and the mDGs
Since its inception, the United Nations has been concerned about international collaboration in the health field to ensure that people all over the world are able to have access to and achieve the highest possible level of health. Its efforts in this were assisted by the establishment of the World Health Organization in 1948, whose
Global health booklet v2.indd 9 8/12/10 5:15 PM
10
overarching goal is to promote technical cooperation among na-tions and carry out programmes aimed at controlling and eradi-cating disease, as well as improving the quality of life for people around the world.
Some 57 years later, international health was again among the global challenges on which world leaders took action in 2005 at the World Summit committing themselves, among other things, to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 – including the three critical health-related ones; namely child health, maternal health and HIV/AIDS, malaria and other infectious diseases. As the countdown to 2015 begins, the need to achieve the MDGs, particu-larly the health-related goals, takes on more urgency.
role of nGos in achieving Global Health
As both the UN Secretary-General and the Director-General of the World Health Organization have noted on global health: “Health is the tie that binds all of the Millennium Development Goals togeth-er. If we fail to meet our target on health, we will never overcome poverty, illiteracy, achieve universal education and meet the other MDG challenges.” It is with this in mind that the DPI/NGO Confer-ence has chosen to focus on global health and more specifically on examining critical issues such as bridging the health gaps that still exist and encouraging equity of treatment and access, addressing failed maternal and child health strategies, promoting civic activ-ism around health and wellness, and strengthening an integrated approach to achieving health for all.
For 60 years the annual Conference was held at UN Headquarters in New York City. Over time recognizing the need to develop a more diverse global NGO community the Department of Public Informa-tion decided to reach out to NGOs in various regions and communi-ties around the globe, by moving the Conference out of New York to various cities in different regions of the world. It was also decided to associate new NGOs in the region where the annual Conference would be held.
Two years ago, the 61st Annual Conference, dedicated to “Reaffirm-ing Human Rights for All,” was fittingly held in Paris, France, where the Universal Declaration for Human Rights was adopted six de-cades earlier. Last year’s Conference, with a theme “For Peace and Development: Disarm Now”, was convened in Mexico—the capital of a country well know for its stand on issues of disarmament. This year the Conference again is aptly held in Melbourne, Australia, a city renown for its medical research, as the NGOs examine the is-sue of Global Health and the MDGs.
Global health booklet v2.indd 10 8/12/10 5:15 PM
11
The Annual DPI/NGO Conference now gives regional NGOs the opportunity to associate themselves with DPI. Consequently, the association process in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2009 brought in 66 NGOs. Forty-three non-governmental organizations based in Mexico were newly associated in time for the Conference. More than three-quarters of the attendees at the Conference also hailed from Mexico and the Latin American/Caribbean region.
This year as the Conference moves to Australia, DPI/NGO Relations has associated 41 NGOs in the Asia-Pacific region including: Australia – 32, Fiji – 1, Philippines – 5, Tonga – 1, Vanuatu – 1.
The success of this year’s Conference will depend on the open-ness and creativity of the NGO participants in working together to advance global health and achieve the MDGs. It is hoped that the three-day exchange of ideas and best practices in Melbourne will leave a lasting legacy not only on Australia, but the rest of the world. NGOs must leave Melbourne inspired and reinvigorated so that they, in turn, can advocate with governments, businesses, researchers and the wider public to galvanise each of us to bet-ter contribute to meeting the Millennium Development Goals and improving global health.
Global health booklet v2.indd 11 8/12/10 5:15 PM
“In global health we need more integration of pro-grams, a focus on maternal/child issues, methods to generate outcome data, cost effective delivery, sustainability, and an emphasis on prevention. Therefore, this Conference should emphasize the multidisciplinary, multifaceted issues in fostering health, not just managing disease”.
