Support Blind Week and make a difference Mark Kaye-Smith has been doggedly trying to get a job in Te Awamutu over the last couple of years — and at last has succeeded. Paul and Debbie Vickers of mbar Ltd had seen his efforts and were impressed with his commitment, but couldn’t see how an engineering workshop could offer employment to a blind person — until recently. While attending Lean Manufacturing training Mr Vickers was looking at different systems for managing inventory and was thinking ‘I need a system so simple that a blind man could do it’. This thought was followed by a memory of Mr Kaye- Smith sitting at a desk outside Deano’s Wilderness Gear in Alexandra Street with a sign in front of him asking for employment. The idea was born. Mr Kaye-Smith was tracked down to see if he was interested — he was keen but had no computer experience. After some computer training and consultations with The Blind Foundation and Work Bridge, Mr Kaye-Smith started work for mbar Ltd last Monday. In a case of what really felt like the blind leading the blind, Mr Vickers and Mr Kaye-Smith have gone through the red tape with The Blind Foundation, Work Bridge and Winz and are now looking forward to the support of these organisations in what is very much a partnership arrangement. ‘‘There is an amazing amount of support and tools available to assist in helping Mr Kaye-Smith ‘see’ what he needs to get the job done,’’ says Mr Vickers. The systems will evolve over the next few months as Mr Kaye-Smith starts with a couple hours a day working alongside Scott Silsbee, the current store man, checking stock in and generally getting to know his way around. Richard Braithwaite, of Strategia, the Lean Manufac- turing coach currently working with mbar is very interested in the process. ‘‘It is exciting that mbar has embraced the simplicity of the Lean concept to this extent,’’ he says. The staff at mbar are already enjoying Mr Kaye- Smith’s sense of humour and incredible zest for life. ‘‘Everyone is keen for his employment to be a success and we look forward to sharing that with him,’’ says Mr Vickers. The Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind’s (RNZBF) Blind Week Appeal kicks off today until November 3. The organisa- tion needs help to raise $1.1 million. This year’s See the Differ- ence You Make campaign is about the extraordinary differ- ence New Zealanders’ gen- erosity can make to the lives of the Foun- dation’s 11,700 blind, deafblind and vision- impaired members. RNZFB executive director marketing and fundraising Alison Wheatley says they are trying to raise over $1.1 million so they can con- tinue giving members the skills needed to do the everyday things that sighted people take for granted like getting from home to work, cook- ing dinner or surfing the net. Only one-third of the Foundation’s $26 million operating budget comes from Government sources, so members rely on public support for the other $17.3 million. Theatre upgrade for festival

TC281008DT02NZ FURNITURE’S father-and-son team Grant (left) and Darren Curry lift in the back row of new seats in the Regent Theatre’snumber five theatre.

By DEAN TAYLOR

When it comes to cinemas Iam unashamedly biased — oursare the best and we are lucky tohave them.

That’s been my party line formany years, but it is alsomostly the truth.

Whether they are the bestmay be a matter of opinion, butit is true our five theatres have‘the best possible’ when itcomes to equipment.

And it is the truth that weare lucky to have them.

Most smallish towns haveno theatre — we have five

screens showing a fantastic mixof latest releases, popular filmsand showcase movies.

And all this is housed in anhistoric theatre building in itsown right, plus it is a livingmuseum to the moving picture.

It is up to us to make sure weretain this wonderful asset toTe Awamutu.

As a co-organiser of ScreamRosetown Festival I am gratefulthat Regent Theatre ownerAllan Webb participates regu-larly by giving screen time tointernational festival films.

The showcase season invari-ably does poor business, which

is a shame when so much is onoffer.

This year is no exception —nine international releasesmake up the World CinemaShowcase Film Festival whichopens Thursday.

Running in the three down-stairs theatres, festival filmgoers will be able to enjoy evenmore new equipment and newseating.

NZ Furniture’s father-and-son team Grant and DarrenCurry were busy last weekinstalling all new seats in num-ber four theatre. More of thesame seats were also installed

in the upstairs number one andtwo theatres.

Mr Webb says the new seatsbrings all the seating in all fivetheatres up to the best possiblestandard for his theatres.

Also in an effort to bringmovie-goers the best possibleexperience, new players, pro-jectors and screens in the vari-ous theatres means eachtheatre now also enjoys thevery latest and best technology.

The upgrade include a new, bigger hi-gain screen for num-ber five theatre.See Film Festival preview,Irana Palm review page 19.

Putting their hands upto help out CanTeen

TC281008GJ01TAMSIN JONES preparing for her CanTeen fundraiser boxing match.

TC281008CT10CRYSTAL PEVREAL says taking a few hits is a small price to pay.

BY GRANT JOHNSTON

Tamsin Jones ismixing training for herboxing match in theCanTeen fundraiser atTe Awamutu EventsCentre on November 14with her roles as amother and policeofficer.

‘ ‘Some weeks Istruggle to get to thegym, so I make up for itwith fitness work athome. Having said that,it seems that nothingprepares you for boxinglike boxing itself.’’

Since she put herhand up three monthsago to assist with thefundraiser organisedby Central RegionPrisons, Tamsin hasbeen trying to learn asmuch as she can about asport she admits toknowing very littleabout.

She and husbandBrendon live atPukeatua with two-year-old daughterSamantha.

Having a youngchild herself is onereason Tamsin is happyto support CanTeen(which assists teen-agers living with can-cer) — the other is thatshe lost her dad,Antoine Brown, to can-cer just over threeyears ago.

‘‘It was extremelysad to lose dad when hehad plenty of living leftto do. When it is ayoung person it is evenmore unfair.

‘‘Dad was able tolook back on a good life.He was rapt to see megraduate from PoliceCollege, something thathe had wanted to dohimself.’’

Tamsin says sheknows of the great workCanTeen does in assist-ing teenagers with can-cer and their families.

She is indebted tohead coach DonWhalley and Te Awa-mutu Sports BoxingClub, and to JamieHansen who has beentraining with her.

Her opponent, Crys-tal Pevreal says she toohas had wonderful sup-port as she trains totake on Tamsin — fromNeil Fynn and RickDobson at PhantomKickboxing who haveprovided free lessonsand her employers,Zero Limits Health andFitness Club who haveprovided time off inevenings for weeklytraining sessions.

‘‘I haven’t person-ally known anyone whohas suffered from can-cer, but I know partici-pating in an event thatsupports teenagers andfamilies who battle can-

cer is worth the effort ofputting my body on theline for a few minutes.

‘ ‘CanTeen helpsthose youngsters andtheir families to con-tinue leading as normala lifestyle as possible.’’

As well as being apersonal trainer, Crys-tal does relief milkingmost mornings on anOhaupo farm and is acongregation memberat The Church@TeAwamutu, where sheserves in various areas

mainly to do withmusic.

Both Crystal andTamsin have strongsupport from col-leagues and friends, who will be there tocheer them on at theEvents Centre.

Their bout is one of10 on the night, whilethere are also a numberof sponsored headshaves.

The boxers wear pro-tective headgear andcontest three two min-

ute rounds — a longtime when the sport isunfamiliar.

There are also anumber of entertainersperforming on thenight.

Last year’sinaugural event pro-vided a great night’sentertainment, with apositive atmosphereand in aid of a wonder-ful cause. Get yourtickets at StirlingSports or Te AwamutuInformation Centre.

Pressing on...

TC281008DT03THE Vet Centre storeman took an unusual cargo on a short trip last weekwhen an old press was delivered into Te Awamutu Museum hands. Thehistory of the circa 1830 British built Hopkinson and Cope flatbed press isn’tvery clear — and more information is welcomed. Te Awamutu Courier hasdonated the press, but its history with the firm has been lost, and attempts toclarify its origins with former staff has had the opposite effect. Some yearsago the offer of the donation was made and an arrangement was made tostore the press. The Vet Centre subsequently leased that storage space and aformal donation and storage arrangement with the museum was arranged.Anyone with information can contact Dean Taylor at the Te Awamutu Courier(871 5151) or museum senior curator Stephanie Lambert (872 0030).

‘‘One of my studentshas had difficulty withhearing and now findsit much easier to pickup what I am sayingwith this system.’’

The system alsomeans that the levels ofnoise in the classroomcan be lower and shedoesn’t have to raiseher voice.

‘‘They can all hearme no matter where Iam in the room. Theytune in more quicklyand I don’t have torepeat myself.’’

Neal Smith fromOticon who suppliedthe FrontRow system toTe Awamutu Primaryand four other localschools says theincreasing numbers ofchildren beginningschool with glue earand hearing problemshas prompted a numberof schools to install thesystems to improvelearning outcomes.

‘ ‘FrontRowenhances vocabulary, reduces teacher vocalstrain and hasincreased student par-ticipation in hundredsof schools around NewZealand over the past 15years.

‘‘The system liter-ally gives every child afront row seat to listenand learn.’’

Mr Smith says thesystem is designed tooptimise classroomsound quality and pro-duce a better learningenvironment.

‘‘Good listening con-ditions are essential tochildren’s auditorydevelopment and gen-eral learning.

‘‘A child’s ability tohear words, phrasesand instructions is vitalfor them to processinformation and under-stand concepts.’’

He says FrontRowdiffers from a simplePA system in that itemphasises speechfrequencies that arecritical for learning.

The system beingused at Te Awamutu is

portable and theteacher simply wears a‘Madonna-style’ micro-phone.

It can be turned onand off whenever theteacher decides.Students can also use ahand-held microphoneif necessary.

Barbara Lim fromthe Te Awamutu Hear-ing Association saysthey are delighted to beable to provide thesesystems to five schoolsinitially.

‘‘We wanted to putsomething back into

the community so wehave purchasedFrontRow systems forTe Awamutu Primary,Pokuru, Pekerau,Puahue and KihikihiSchools to trial at thisstage.

‘‘We hope to eventu-ally provide systems for15 of our local schools.’’

The project is utilis-ing grants and somefunds from the HearingAssociation, but fur-ther fundraising isnecessary, as each port-able unit is valued at$1440 plus GST. 6537466AA

Mates from maternity to maturity

TC281008SP01MATES (back): Viv Veale, Nicky Mason, Rochelle Old, Cindy Wheatly, IreneGround; (front): Carmen Furniss, Cassey Hockly and Lisa Mitchell.

Local resident Lisa Mitchell says around 11 yearsago she was one of a group of women sitting in thelocal antenatal classes not knowing what wasahead.

‘‘We all had similar thoughts — how on earthwere we going to cope with our wee bundles due inthe next couple of months?’’

But it was those little people that drew thewomen together in the form of a common goal:friendship.

‘‘Through Plunket and Parent Centre our ‘coffeegroup’ — or ‘gin club’ as our husbands referred to it— was formed. We didn’t know each other prior tothis, but with a great sense of expectation andrespect for each other, we got on with the job, learning from each other.’’

Mrs Mitchell says initally the group met everyWednesday at a different home, for coffee and a chat.

‘‘We discussed motherhood and any problems wewere experiencing with our babies at that time.

‘‘We offered up what worked for us and wasn’tworking with regard to feeding, sleeping, teethingetc.’’

When more children arrived, the get-togethersturned into monthly meetings, which continued forthe next five years until the eldest children startedschool and some of the mums returned to the workforce.

‘‘Even though we got together originally forbabies and a vital lifeline for our sanity, thechildren flourished. They look out for each othernow at school events and after school activities, even though they attend different schools.

‘‘The older kids are still great mates and theyounger siblings gel well. We now have 18 childrenin the group with the latest addition arriving earlierthis year.’’

Mrs Mitchell says over the years their needs as agroup changed.

‘‘We enjoyed each other’s company on differentlevels which gave each other confidence to take onnew challenges in our lives.’’

Bi-annual girls’ weekends started with plenty ofpampering and time out, while the husbands formedfriendships beyond the family times and stagedboys’ weekends.

‘‘Our other claim to fame is our annual MysteryWeekend (without children) where the sky’s thelimit. To date many adventures have been had —from black water and white water rafting, lugeing, clay bird shooting, lake cruises and horse trekkingto rock climbing, ropes course, parasailing, gocarting, paintball, bush walking and an ‘AmazingRace’ in Auckland during Storm Ivy.

Fitting gateway for cemetery

TC281008GJ02MT PIRONGIA LIONS, from left Noelene Jolley (secretary), Sabina Owen and Brent Parsons (president) with the revampedentrance to Alexandra Cemetery.

BY GRANT JOHNSTON

Alexandra Cemetery hassome great new galvanisedgates thanks to Mt PirongiaLions.

Lion Sabina Owen raisedthe need for new gates withfellow Lions earlier this yearand they enthusiastically sup-ported the project.

A delegation met with Wai-pa District Council staff mem-bers, Max Ward and John

Dillon, to outline their plansand once approval wasgranted Lions formed a smallcommittee to oversee the pro-ject.

An article in the Courierbrought in donations fromlocals and from peoplethroughout New Zealand whohad strong family ties with thecemetery (having read aboutthe project online).

The new double gates werebuilt by Kevin Farrell at

Pirongia Welding and the let-tering was donated by NatalieDouglas of Grave Design inHamilton.

Lions and contractors,Rodney Macdonald and LaurieRyan, were to the fore withlandscaping work and fittingthe gates.

The result has drawnnumerous favourable com-ments.

There will be an officialopening ceremony (date to be

advised) which the public willbe welcome to attend.

The $6000-plus gates projectis not Pirongia Lions firstproject at Alexandra Cem-etery — in the 1990s Lionscarried out a major clean-upproject after complaints froman overseas visitor (related toauthor Mary Scott) about theunkempt and overgrown stateof the reserve. Earliestrecorded burial at the cem-etery was in 1875.

Billy goes into bat forarthritis sufferers

TC231008CT02‘ARTHRITIS OUT’: Billy Bowden (left) tells fellow international umpire,John Hastie how to send his sore knees packing with Zostrix.

International umpire big hit

Flamboyant interna-tional cricket umpireBilly Bowden gave the‘thumbs up’ for Zostrixwhen in-store atMarshalls Pharmacy onTuesday promotingArthritis Week.

The 45-year-oldAucklander told cus-tomers: ‘‘I cannot guar-antee the topicalanalgesic but I canpromise you it works.’’

Bowden says Zostrix‘stops the pain going tothe brain’.

The affable cricketumpire knows firsthand what it’s like tosuffer from arthritis.

A promising crick-eter in his own right,Bowden was struckdown at the age of 21 byrheumatoid arthritis, adebilitating conditionthat affects the mobilityof the sufferer.

Bowden went on tobecome famous as anumpire for his dramaticsignalling style, includ-ing the crooked fingerof doom because hisarthritis prevented himraising his fingerstraight up.

Bowden is bound forIndia to umpire in thethird and fourth tests ofthe series between thehost nation and Aus-tralia. India inflictedthe biggest defeat onAustralia for nine yearswinning the second testby 320 runs at Mohalion Tuesday.

The impending testsin Delhi and Nagpurwill be Bowden’s 49thand 50th internationals.

Te Awamutu’s JohnHastie, who umpiredseven tests from 1974 to1981, caught up withBowden during his visitto town.

When he toldBowden that his kneeswere ‘packing up’ andhe was to go under thesurgeon’s knife, the fel-low umpire told him todismiss that idea andtry Zostrix.

Bowden also had a

message for Te Awa-mutu 13-year-old TimHooper after making a‘duck’ in his first evergame of cricket forHamilton Boys’ HighSchool Year 9 teamagainst Matamata.

‘‘There’s only oneway you can go fromhere and that’s up,’’Bowden said.

‘‘Even the very bestbatsmen in the worldget ducks.’’

Kendyl to receive coachingfrom squash legend Devoy

TC231008SP11WORLD junior squad member Kendyl Morris, flanked by New Zealand U19No. 3 Alana Sincock (left) and under-19 special plate winner GeorginaShelton-Agar at the prizegiving in Palmerston North.

CALLUM BURKES

BY COLIN THORSEN

Chances of KendylMorris making the NewZealand team for nextyear’s World JuniorWomen’s Squash Cham-pionships in India havebeen greatly enhanced.

The 17-year-old TeAwamutu A grader isthe sole Waikato repre-sentative selected in theWorld Junior Women’sSquad.

Richard Thompson,Squash New Zealandhigh performance mana-ger, named seven-strongjunior men’s andwomen’s squads afterthe junior nationals atPalmerston North.

These squads willrun separately andreplace the existing elitedevelopment squad sys-tem.

Morris will becoached by former worldchampion Susan Devoy.

Players invited intothese squads have theability and potential torepresent New Zealandat World Junior Cham-pionships and have thedesire to be a squashprofessional.

‘‘The purpose will beto introduce them to,and prepare them for,the demands of interna-tional squash.’’

Devoy says whenselecting the team fornext year’s World Jun-ior Women’s Champion-ships, the selectors willtake into considerationthe likes of a player’sattitude, discipline andmotivation at all train-ing camps — results at

selection tournaments(NZ Junior Open, Wai-kato Open, Senior NorthIsland Champs), head tohead matches at train-ing camps, results fromfitness tests, and a desireto play professionalsquash after the WorldJunior Championships.

Squash NZ willannounce, on June 7,2009, the team to go toChennai, India fromJuly 22 to August 1, 2009.

Morris lived up to herfourth ranking at thejunior nationals inPalmerston North, fin-ishing fourth in U19girls’ with a two wins, two loss record. Herlosses were to top seed

Amanda Cranston(Ohakune) and No. 3Alana Sincock (Rox-burgh), who both playfor Waikato.

Morris’ younger sis-ter Tate also finishedfourth U15 girls’ with atwo wins, two lossrecord.

Jorja Tarrant man-aged a win and twolosses in U17 girls.

Young CallumBurkes fulfilled hisambition of qualifyingfor the top division of hisU13 age group and fin-ishing in the top 10 — helost his first game, thenwon all other matches towin the plate. He hasanother year in this age

group and has set him-self the target of a topfour finish at thenationals in Auckland.

Win new single from EqwanoxCelebrate the forthcoming shows by

Eqwanox, including Auckland’s VectorArena on Saturday, November 8 withSeether, Autozamm and Corvino Eqwanox,by winning their new single ‘Not ComingHome’.

The lads from Eqwanox have certainlybeen busy. Since supporting Smashing Pump-kins front man Billy Corgan on his solo tourhere in 2005 they have been out and aboutgigging at every given opportunity. Playingboth their own gigs and also supporting topNZ acts such as the Bleeders has seen themkept at their peak performance wise. Theyhave gained profile through reaching thefinals of such events as The World Battle OfThe Bands and KFC Sounds From Your

Hometown. They’ve also been busy in the studio

having completed their debut effort ‘AllRoads Lead From Here’ with help from48May’s Hook at Dudley and Chazz Rabble atNo.8 Wire Studios respectively.

Having recently taken Kyle Wetton onboard as a fourth member they weredelighted to hear that he had been inspired tolearn guitar after having been taught somebasic chords by Seether’s frontman ShaunMorgan and seeing him perform a couple oftimes when both lived in South Africa.

Seether’s unique spin on the Post Grunge/Hard Rock/Alternative Metal genres is seento great advantage on their last two albums‘Karma and Effect’ and ‘Finding Beauty In

Negative Spaces’. Having given up greatsingles in ‘Remedy’, ‘Truth’, ‘The Gift’, ‘FakeIt’ and the anthemic ‘Rise Above This’ as wellas the newie ‘Breakdown’, these two albumsalone provide a good base for the live concertsetlist. Throw in earlier singles such as‘Driven Under’, ‘Fine Again’, ‘Gasoline’ and‘Broken’ and you have the makings of aheavy, hard and loud show that suggeststhere won’t be too many punters sitting downby the end of the night.

Tickets from Ticketmaster. To be in to win put your name, address and

daytime phone number on the back of anenvelope, address it to the Eqwanox CDCompetition and make sure it reaches ouroffice by 5pm Friday.

WORLD CINEMA SHOWCASE FILM FESTIVAL

APRON STRINGS - A story of today set against the backdrop of Auckland's multi-cultural southern suburbs about two families from two cultures, featuring a magnificent cast. Food and love are intertwined in this touching tale.

MARRIED LIFE - Four wonderful actors in a fine human drama with mystery and intrigue set in the 1949 U.S. It is mesmerising in its detail, with gorgeous costumes and an elegant set design. Recommended.

JINX SISTER - A modern tale, set in South Auckland, of a young woman's return from the U.S. after 10 years to find out how her sister's family is. This brings back memories of her childhood in this well-crafted story.

IRINA PALM - Marianne Faithfull (an extremely popular singer of the 60s) is absolutely wonderful in this beautiful story. "I loved this film and it has stayed in my memory. Prudes, don't come, but every other adult should." Allan. "A gem." Empire.

OUTSOURCED - This is a lovely tale, set mostly in India, and is well-worth a watch. Inspired by the writer's experiences travelling in Nepal and India it is a very real story of today, which we recommend.

PRAGUE - The dramatic story of a Copenhagen marriage that slowly crumbles during a sad, darkly quirky trip to the Czech capital, starring Mads (Casino Royale, After the Wedding) Mikkelsen.

FOUR MINUTES - From the deafening opening to an electrifying finale... a major work. A screen play rich with layers and realistic characters, a unique setting, powerful performances and gripping direction all combine to make Four Minutes an outstanding drama.

UN SECRET - A French film in a similar style to Atonement. This is a splendid and moving saga of a Jewish family in post-war Paris, told through the eyes of a frail and intelligent young boy who senses something is amiss with his beautiful parents. Unexpectedly intriguing." Listener.

THE COUNTERFEITERS - This is a very good film, which is reminiscent of 'The Lives Of Other'. It's an accomplished true story of cunning, compromise and survival. Winner of the 2008 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

World Cinema Showcase

Irina Palm REVIEWED BY DEAN TAYLOR

A special preview to Te Awamutu’sWorld Cinema Showcase is ‘IrinaPalm’ — an unlikely story about anunselfish grandmother’s efforts tosave the life of her grandson.

This is a totally absorbing movie, starring veteran singer MarianneFaithfull as Maggie — a simple, unself-ish woman who enters ‘Sexy World’ asthe last resort to help her family.

Maggie overcomes her fears to takeon the ‘job’ — and shows she has athing or two to teach the industry, such as compassion, kindness andwork ethic.

And its not only the clients who arewon over by Maggie — although herson and daughter-in-law are not quiteso understanding when the truth istold.

‘Irina Palm’ is filmed in a dark, almost monotone style. It is set inLondon, but even the era is unclear —not that it matters.

In terms of storytelling, this is abrilliant film. It is lovely. It isintriguing. It’s not for the very prudish(it features masturbation and some-thing known as ‘penis elbow’) — buteveryone else should see it.
