SUMMARY OF THE LAW — Minister: Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

¶The people remain standing.

COLLECT FOR THE DAY — ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen.

¶The Minister may offer additional prayers here.

¶The people sit.EPISTLE — Romans XIII, 8. Brethren: Owe no man any-thing, but

to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.

Minister: Here endeth the Epistle.

Response: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL — St. Matthew XXI, 1. At that time: when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the

daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, who is this? And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, and said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

¶During the Altar preparation the Minister may say privately, the following:

At the offering of the Host. Receive, O Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God, this spotless Host, which I, thine unworthy servant, do offer unto thee, my God, the living and the true, for my countless sins, offenses, and negligences, for all here present, and for all the faithful in Christ, both quick and dead: that it may be profitable both to me and to them for salvation unto life eternal. Amen.

At the blessing of the water and mixing of the Chalice.O God, + who didst wonderfully create, and yet more wonderfully renew the dignity of the nature of man; grant unto us, that through the mystery of this water and Wine, we may be sharers in his divinity who vouchsafed to be made partaker of our humanity, Jesus Christ, thy son our Lord, who with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen.

At the offering of the Chalice. We offer unto thee, O Lord, the cup of salvation, humbly beseeching thy mercy; that it may go up before thy Divine Majesty with a sweet savour for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. Amen.

At the offering of Ourselves. In the spirit of humility, and with a contrite heart, let us be accepted by thee, O Lord; and so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day, that it may be well pleasing unto thee, O Lord our God.

Page 12: 65988a72a2400d508794 …65988a72a2400d508794-1cd4df745bb3d2e59773961e08…  · Web viewThe word "advent" means "coming," and during this season we are presented with the yearly opportunity

If incense is present.Come, O Sanctifier, Almighty, Everlasting God, and ble+ss this Sacrifice prepared for thy holy Name.

May this incense, blessed by thee, rise up to thee, O Lord, and may thy mercy come down upon us.

Psalm 14: 2-4 Let my prayer, O Lord, be set forth in thy sight as the incense; and let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice. Set a watch. O Lord, before my mouth, and keep the door of my lips. O let not mine heart be inclined to any evil thing; let me not be occupied in ungodly works.

May the Lord kindle in us the fire of his love, and the flame of everlasting charity. Amen.

¶ The Offering, if received, may be presented here.¶Here the Minister may cleanse his hands while he says:Psalm 26:6-12 I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord: and so will I go to thine altar; That I may show the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth. O shut not up my soul with the sinners, nor my life with the blood-thirsty;In whose hands is wickedness, and their right hand is full of gifts. But as for me, I will walk innocently: O deliver me, and be merciful unto me. My foot standeth right: I will praise the Lord in the congregations. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

¶The Minister continues:Receive, O Holy Trinity, this oblation which we offer unto thee in memory of the Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus Christ our Lord; and in honour of blessed Mary ever Virgin, of blessed John the Baptist, of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all thy Saints: that it may avail them to their honour, and us to our salvation; and may they whose memory we celebrate on earth vouchsafe to intercede for us in heaven; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our [alms and] oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty; beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: And grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love.    We beseech thee also, so to direct and dispose the hearts of all Christian Rulers, that they may truly and impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion, and virtue.    Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and other Ministers, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments.    And to all thy People give thy heavenly grace; and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.    And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all those who, in this transitory life, are in

trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.    And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service, and to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

VWe do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

¶ Here the Minister says: “I will receive the Bread of Heaven and call upon the name of the Lord” then repeating thrice “Lord, I am not worthy . . . .” Ω and administering his communion and afterwards presenting the Host saying:

People: ¶Repeated three times. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed.

COMMUNION —¶ All are invited to come forward; those who wish to receive a Blessing instead of Holy Communion (where those who partake believe Christ is really and truly present) should so indicate by crossing their arms over their chest while kneeling at the Altar Rail.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. PENITENTIAL SEASON:

“Advent tells us Christ is near . . . . ”;  are words from an old familiar hymn [Hymn No. 235, Verse 1, Hymnal 1940, Church Hymnal Corp., New York, N.Y. (1961) Supp. I & II.] The word "advent" means "coming," and during this season we are presented with the yearly opportunity to prepare ourselves for the coming of our Lord in His Incarnation and for His Second Coming when He will be our judge.

Now we are in a penitential time to prepare ourselves for a joyous occasion.  It is a time for quiet, solemn, and deep cleansing of our souls to again celebrate the Coming of our Savior.

Our vestments and Altar coverings change to purple, or violet, the color of penitence. The change of color and removal of the “Gloria in Excelsis” from our Mass liturgy until Christmas signify this preparation.  We humbly prepare ourselves to be ready to meet our Savior, as we reassess our lives in light of His life and teachings. Some of us begin a Novena (nine days) of prayer, which can be found in Traditional St. Augustine’s Prayer Book, [Preservation Press, Swedesboro, N. J. (1998) at pp. 309 (Christmas), 312 (B. V. M.), & 318 (Holy Ghost)]. We also should prepare for our individual confession before taking communion at Christmas.

The focus of these preparations is repentance and forgiveness. This should lead us to personal healing and a renewed life for us.  For we are God’s new creation by the Holy Spirit,

ORDO CALENDARS: You may order your 2013 Ordo Calendar from the church office and save postage. The cost this year is $8.00. The order will be placed this week of December 3rd. Please advise the church office by email, [email protected] or by telephone, 303-758-7211, how many calendars you wish to order. This year's Ordo Kalendar features the art of the Anglican Missal. Although the first publication of the Missal in 1921 was filled with an eclectic mix of illustrations by artists ranging from Albrecht Dürer to W.M.R. Quick, when it was reprinted in 1939, the eight full page line drawings and numerous decorative elements by Martin Travers (1886-1948) gave it a much more uniform look. An experienced designer and draughtsman, Travers blended a baroque sensibility with a clean, contemporary style, giving the Missal a look that was both traditional and modern, and distinct from the line art that was being used in Roman Catholic publications of the period. Travers’s line art has been a favorite with generations of Anglo-Catholics.
